I appreciate what DU can bring to the table as far as links to less reported stories, some insightful reasoning and points of view and the rest.
But I also realize one must take most things seen on here with a huge grain of salt--shovels worth of salt, at times.
There are long time posters with many posts to their names that have wonderfully edifying things to say. But those same posters can go off the deep end on a particular topic and become downright unreasonable.
There are new posters who often say things of great value, and they can be overlooked at times. I know I've fallen into the habit of engaging with negative personalities or posting with emotion rather than reason.
We don't all have to agree or disagree on every topic, but we can try to hold ourselves to a higher standard of writing and effort at making our points.
For new low post count people trying to contribute and to long time lurkers....we need your voices. Don't let the perceived authority of a few more vocal posters stop you from posting your great thoughts.
I now live in Spokane, WA after 10 yrs in Portland. Today I saw
Not one but TWO overpasses along I-90 with people waving flags and Impeach Obama banners. Seriously....what the FUCK?!
I'm laughing at them as I drive giving them the thumbs down sign and I'm thinking, "Impeach him for what, you fucking racists?"
All of the people were, of course, white. This is the day after I stopped by Democratic Party headquarters in downtown Spokane to say hi and get voter registration cards.
I guess it's good I'm in a more conservative part of a very blue state so I can see this politically asanine group up close.
And.....I'm just miles from Idaho, one of the reddest states out there. I relish the opportunity to get involved here.
I hate when people pray over their food aloud in public
Sitting in Starbucks, this couple sits down next to me with their bagel and coffee and hold hands across the table and start praying quite loudly to their God for their fine mid morning snack. Ugh!!
I get it. You love your God. But supposedly he can hear your silent prayers too. Don't under estimate the magical powers of your God.
And if you were trying to "bear witness" to your faith...it had opposite of the intended effect.
Yours truly, non religious agnostic just trying to enjoy his coffee and newspaper in peace.

Third and FINAL installment in DU user Book Recommendations
Hello again! My latest list combines all of the later suggestions other than a couple that just came in--Sorry!!
Anyway, the order of book titles didn't change a whole lot, but there was some movement. I also extended the list to the top 29 based on # of recommenders and where they ranked it (or which they listed first even if they weren't ranked).
In this list, I also included every book title and author people suggested beyond the top 29 (which each got at leat 3 votes). The remaining are sorted by number of votes it got and then alphabetically.
I will be following up in this discussion board with a more comprehensive suggested "teen reads" list that I'm working on which takes into account DU recommendations and a variety of other sources.
This has been a very enlightening and expansive project helping me to see where teen literature has been going the past couple of decades, and my new list will definitely be incorporating more of a focus on pleasant but eye-opening reads for teenagers and writings from other perspectives such as people of color, international writers, etc.

What top 5 books would you list when directing a teenager?
If you wanted to persuade a teenager in the United States to develop critical thinking skills, empathy, and awareness of the world around them, what would be your top 5 books you recommend? Critical limit on this...you have to have read them yourself.
I know some will put books out there that aren't as obvious to me or others. If you want to state why you think it is a top 5...feel free, but if not that is great too. Just looking for perspectives.
Mine would be:
1)Night by Elie Weisel
The extreme violence and destruction of human souls is occurring daily even now. Currently in Syria but recently in Iraq, Bosnia, Congo, and more. It is important for people to see the depths humans are capable of from the individual perspective of one boy who was forever changed.
2)1984 by George Orwell
This book characterizes a dystopian future that we are actually very close to achieving, but again Love is a central theme--both real love and the way love is manipulated.
3)To Kill a Mockingbird by
Such a terrific portrayal of racism, fear of "other", and of course bravery in the face of hate, honorable treatment of others, and love.
4)Les Miserables by Victor Hugo
This is a timeless book capturing personal triumph over injustice--love despite despair, the rich with boot heels on the necks of the poor, a desire of some people to change the world through violence, and a thousand other great moral lessons. Much longer than the others but so satisfying in it's scope.
5)Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka
A perfect way for young people to realize most of established society will lock us into an insect-like existence as we slave for the machine. There are countless works informed by this wonderful story. Again, hopefully it helps young people realize they can become their own person--not trapped in meaningless drudgery.
