San Bernardino Shooting: FBI director flies into city to praise first responders

Source: Riverside Press Enterprise

Dec. 22, 2015

FBI Director James Comey on Tuesday morning, Dec. 22, in person praised law enforcement officers and others who responded to the Dec. 2 shooting in San Bernardino and others who investigated the attack that killed 14 people and wounded 22 others.

Comey flew into San Bernardino International Airport and met with police, probation officers, coroner's officials and firefighters from several agencies in a terminal.

"I thought it was awesome," San Bernardino police Sgt. Vicki Cervantes said. "It's Christmas time and he said he was on vacation, but he felt it was important to come out and thank us for the work that we did. That meant a lot to me."

Comey did not discuss the investigation, Cervantes said. His intent was to inspire the officers. "My one takeaway is when he quoted Winston Churchill," said San Bernardino police Capt. Raymond King. "He said 'We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.'"

Assad makes rare visit to church in Damascus frontline

Source: Reuters

19 Dec 2015 19:25

DAMASCUS: Syrian President Bashar al Assad attended Christmas choir preparations in an ancient church close to a frontline area in the capital Damascus where his army is engaged in heavy fighting with rebels, state media said on Saturday.

State television showed footage of Assad and his wife Asma making the visit overnight to the Notre Dame de Damas Church, where he was shown chatting to the choir. He took a seat near the altar and listened to a recital of Christmas poems in the main cathedral hall. The surroundings of the church in the old part of the ancient capital were hit by mortar fire on Friday, officials said.

Assad has portrayed himself in recent interviews with the Western media as a protector of Syria's minorities, saying his rule was an example of religious tolerance in a country threatened by Islamist insurgents who have taken swathes of territory and seek to impose their version of strict Islam.

The church visit came at around the same time as the United Nations Security Council unanimously approved on Friday a resolution endorsing an international road map for a Syria peace process, a rare show of unity among major powers on a conflict that has claimed more than a quarter million lives.

Hoping this doesn't give offense and that it shows why Assad has maintained popular support for so long.

Top NYT editor calls San Bernardino social media report 'a really big mistake'

Source: CNNMoney

December 18, 2015: 3:16 PM ET

The executive editor of The New York Times says his paper's erroneous report on the San Bernardino terrorists' social media use was "a really big mistake," and would cause the Times to reconsider its use of anonymous sources.

"More than anything since I've become editor it does make me think we need to do something about how we handle anonymous sources," Dean Baquet told Margaret Sullivan, the Times' public editor, on Friday. "This was a system failure that we have to fix."

The report, which appeared on the front page of the Sunday edition, claimed that Tashfeen Malik had "talked openly on social media about her views on violent jihad," and that these postings had gone "uncovered" by American law enforcement authorities.

The Times was forced to revise its report on Thursday after FBI Director James Comey told reporters that both Malik and her husband, Syed Farook, never posted publicly on social media about their views, but had instead communicated via "direct, private messages." Comey dismissed the Times report as inaccurate "garble."

President Obama to visit San Bernardino on Friday

The Hill | December 16, 2015, 01:45 pm

President Obama will travel to San Bernardino, Calif., on Friday to meet with families of the victims of the deadliest terrorist attack on U.S. soil since 9/11, the White House said.

Obama is stopping in the Southern California city, where 14 people were killed, on the way to his annual Christmas vacation in Hawaii. Press secretary Josh Earnest said Wednesday the president will “visit privately” with the families. Media access is not expected to be granted, Earnest said, and there are no plans for Obama to deliver a speech.

The president has spent this week trying to show the public he has a handle on the fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) at home and abroad.

Public fears about the threat of terrorism around the holidays have spiked following the attacks in Paris and San Bernardino. Friday’s visit is a chance for Obama to convey sympathy to the families of the victims of the shooting at the Inland Regional Center.

San Bernardino in happier days

The original McDonald's restaurant was located downtown near U.S. Route 66 on a site that is now a McDonald's museum:

In 1940, brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald had moved the family hotdog stand from Monrovia to 1398 North E Street and opened McDonald's Bar-B-Que on May 15 with 25 menu items, mostly barbecue, and 20 carhops. It became a profitable teen hangout and in 1948, the brothers remodeled to implement their streamlined "Speedee Service System" selling only hamburgers, milkshakes, and fries. At 15 cents, the burgers were half as expensive as at standard diners and served immediately. In 1952 the brothers hired architect Stanley Meston to design a replacement stand with a more eye-catching appearance and began to franchise their restaurant. The first franchisee was Neil Fox.

The McDonald brothers sold the franchise to milkshake machine salesman Ray Kroc in 1955 and the rest is fast food history.
