Hackers transform Angry Birds website into 'Spying Birds' following NSA claims

The official Angry Birds website was defaced by hackers following reports that U.S. and U.K. intelligence agencies have been collecting user information from the game and other popular mobile apps.

Some users trying to access the www.angrybirds.com website late Tuesday were greeted by an image depicting the Angry Birds game characters accompanied by the text “Spying Birds.” The U.S. National Security Agency’s logo was also visible in the image.

Life Story of Wendy Davis Swings From Strength to Flash Point in Texas Campaign

Wendy Davis is learning the perils of campaigning on her personal biography.

Since The Dallas Morning News raised questions this month about whether she had fudged some items in her biography, Ms. Davis has been under attack by her Republican opponent for governor, Greg Abbott, the Texas attorney general, and everyone from Bristol Palin to Rush Limbaugh for omitting the fact that her second husband helped pay for her Harvard Law School education and that her two children mostly stayed in Texas while she was there.

The controversy has turned her underdog campaign to become Texas’s first Democratic governor in 20 years into a hotbed of second-guessing over her omissions and has prompted a debate over culturally charged questions about a woman’s balance of work, ambition and parenthood.

In a state with a booming economy but simmering problems with its public schools and water infrastructure and with high rates of poverty and people without health insurance, one of the central questions hanging over the race is how long, exactly, Ms. Davis lived in a trailer in Fort Worth as a single mother.

'Priceless' Stradivarius violin stolen in armed robbery in Milwaukee

A 300-year-old Stradivarius violin on loan to Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Frank Almond was stolen during an armed robbery after a performance by Almond at Wisconsin Lutheran College, Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn said Tuesday.

Almond was attacked with a stun gun and robbed of the instrument — Flynn said it was valued in the "high seven figures" — shortly before 10:30 p.m. Monday in a parking lot in the rear of the school, 8815 W. Wisconsin Ave., the chief said at a news conference.

As Almond lay on the pavement the robber fled to a nearby vehicle, described as a maroon or burgundy minivan driven by an accomplice, which then left the scene, Flynn said.

Almond had played a concert Monday evening at Wisconsin Lutheran as part of his Frankly Music series.

"The artistic heritage of Milwaukee was assaulted and robbed last night," Flynn told reporters during the conference at the Police Administration Building.

Rep. Michael Grimm Apologizes to Reporter for Threatening to Break Him In Half (Like a boy)

Rep. Michael Grimm apologized to a NY1 repoter for threatenining to throw him off a "f____ balcony" and break in half on Tuesday night.

The Time Michael Grimm Yelled At Me

A day later, Grimm has called Scotto, who "accepted my apology, and we're going to go to lunch. We put it all behind us," Grimm told reporters in the Capitol on Wednesday.

"My constituents know I'm extremely passionate," Grimm said, adding he worked throughout the day Tuesday on flood insurance. "My district, people were slammed by Superstom Sandy. I have to go home and look people in the eye that have nothing, OK? They have lost everything they have ever owned, and they are almost completely out of hope, and you know what they expect? They expect Michael Grimm to have their back, and that's what I'm going for."

"I'm the guy that's going to stand up for these constituents," he continued. "I'm going to be relentless, and I'm very passionate about it. And unfortunately, when you're that type of person who has that kind of passion, your emotions can get the better of you."

Some Bay Area Communities Could Run Out Of Water Within 4 Months

As the drought in California continues, 17 communities throughout the state could run out of water within 60 to 120 days, state officials said.

In some districts, the wells are running dry while other reservoirs are nearly empty. The state Health Department compiled a list after surveying the more than 3,000 water agencies in California last week.

The water systems are in all in rural areas that serve from 39 to 11,000 residents. They range from tiny Lompico County Water District in Santa Cruz County to districts that serve the cities of Healdsburg and Cloverdale in Sonoma County.

Some districts have long-running problems that began before the drought. Larger communities like Santa Clara Valley however, have fared better because of long-running conservation programs.

U.S. hospitals hit with shortage of intravenous saline

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Tuesday it is working with the three manufacturers of intravenous saline solutions commonly used to hydrate hospital patients to address a shortage caused by a spike in demand.

Healthcare providers are reserving supplies of the fluids for their most seriously ill patients, and the product manufacturers - Baxter International Inc, Hospira Inc and B. Braun Medical Inc - have stepped up production in response, said Valerie Jensen, FDA's associate director for drug shortages.

"We have not heard of anyone running out of the IV solutions at this point, but we know the hospitals are not comfortable with the low supplies," Jensen said.

Manufacturers first notified FDA late last year that they expected delays in filling orders, but an increase in hospitalizations two weeks ago partly due to rising numbers of flu cases exacerbated the problem, she said.

"The increase in demand pushed this into a shortage," Jensen said.

Senator Says Iran Sanctions Bill Won’t Get A Vote ‘Any Time Soon’

Sen. Angus King (I-ME) said Tuesday that momentum in the Senate on imposing new sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program has subsided and that those pushing the bill are considering alternative avenues to pressure the White House in its upcoming negotiations with Tehran.

Reuters reported on Tuesday that the effort in the Senate to place new sanctions on Iran — a move opposed by numerous experts, the Obama administration and some high-ranking Members of Congress — “has stalled,” and that “lawmakers are discussing whether to introduce a much weaker measure.”

“I would say based on the story this morning, based on comments I’m getting on the floor, the momentum has slowed in terms of bringing it forward,” King said at an event sponsored by the Council on Foreign Relations. “So if I had to bet right now I would think that it probably won’t come to the floor any time soon.”

King said that statements from the likes of Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI), Senate Armed Services Committee chairman, and various experts against the Iran sanctions bill has contributed to its current downward trajectory. “A lot of people have been saying, ‘Wait a minute, slow down, what would be the effect here?’” King added. “Because at the beginning it was you know, let’s go and 59 co-sponsors in a matter of weeks and then it kind of stopped.”

Norway lawmakers nominate Snowden for Nobel

Source: AP

Two Norwegian politicians have jointly nominated former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden for the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize, saying his disclosures of secret U.S. documents have contributed to making the world more peaceful.

Anyone can be nominated for the prestigious award, so the submission Wednesday by Socialist lawmakers Baard Vegard Solhjell, a former environment minister, and Snorre Valen just means Snowden will be one of scores of names that the Nobel committee will consider.

"We do not necessarily condone or support all of his disclosures," the two lawmakers said in their nomination letter. "We are, however, convinced that the public debate and changes in policy that have followed in the wake of Snowden's whistleblowing has contributed to a more stable and peaceful world order."

The five-member Nobel committee won't confirm who's been nominated. Saturday is the deadline for nominations from a range of people, including members of national parliaments and governments, university professors or previous laureates.

Multiple sclerosis 'linked to food bug'

A food poisoning bacterium may be implicated in MS, say US researchers.

Lab tests in mice by the team from Weill Cornell Medical College revealed a toxin made by a rare strain of Clostridium perfringens caused MS-like damage in the brain.

And earlier work by the same team, published in PLoS ONE, identified the toxin-producing strain of C. perfringens in a young woman with MS.

But experts urge caution, saying more work is needed to explore the link.

No-one knows the exact cause of Multiple sclerosis (MS), but it is likely that a mixture of genetic and environmental factors play a role. It's a neurological condition which affects around 100,000 people in the UK.

Hong Kong tycoon's daughter defends sexuality in letter

The daughter of a Hong Kong tycoon has urged her father in an open letter to accept she is a lesbian, after he offered millions to find her a husband.

Gigi Chao says Cecil Chao should accept her partner and "treat her like a normal, dignified human being".

Ms Chao, 33, who married her long-term partner Sean Eav in France in 2012, also emphasised: "There are plenty of good men, they are just not for me."

Mr Chao last week reportedly offered to double his 2012 offer of $65m (£40m).

Hong Kong does not recognise same-sex unions, although homosexuality was decriminalised in 1991.
