Peaches Geldof 'died of heroin overdose'

Live Aid founder Bob Geldof's daughter Peaches died of a heroin overdose, the same cause of death as her mother Paul Yates in 2000, Britain's Times newspaper reported on Thursday.

The model died suddenly on April 7, aged 25, but the autopsy proved inconclusive.

However, Detective Chief Inspector Paul Fotheringham is due to tell a hearing in Gravesend, Kent, later Thursday that toxicology tests showed she had died of a heroin overdose, the paper reported.

Peaches, who wrote for British magazines and newspapers and presented celebrity-driven television shows, was found dead at her countryside home where she was looking after 11-month-old son Phaedra.

The White House Wants to Issue You an Online ID - driver's license for the internet

A few years back, the White House had a brilliant idea: Why not create a single, secure online ID that Americans could use to verify their identity across multiple websites, starting with local government services. The New York Times described it at the time as a "driver's license for the internet."

Sound convenient? It is. Sound scary? It is.

Next month, a pilot program of the "National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace" will begin in government agencies in two US states, to test out whether the pros of a federally verified cyber ID outweigh the cons.

Boot Sterling? NBA Team Owners May Be Concerned About Skeletons In Their Closet

On Tuesday, Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling was banned for life by the NBA in response to racist comments the league says he made in a recorded conversation, but what comes next? The other NBA owners need a 75 percent vote to have Donald Sterling removed as owner.

But Detroit News columnist and 97-1 The Ticket co-host Terry Foster wonders if the other owners may be worried about their own skeletons in their closets.

“I think there is a fear … some owners may not … want an investigation, so they want this thing to go away as quickly as possible. The one thing about Donald Sterling, he loves to sue people, so I think the other owners have to be careful, they definitely don’t want things coming out of their closet,” said Foster.

Foster also thinks Clipper coach Doc Rivers and the players are hypocrites because they knew exactly what Sterling was all about when they signed their contracts.

They knew what he stood for before, don’t be surprised, don’t be outraged because you signed a contract to work for this man and the whole league knew what he was about.

Subway removes pork from stores after 'strong demand' from Muslims

Around 200 branches of Subway have cut ham and bacon from their menus, serving halal meat in response to calls from their Muslim customers.

The sandwich chain said 'following a strong demand from our Muslim customers', 185 stores in the UK and Ireland have introduced the meat, which is prepared under strict Islamic rules.

In Arabic the word halal means 'permitted' or 'lawful' and defines anything that is allowed or lawful according to the Qur'an.

It is often used to indicate food - particularly meat - has been prepared in accordance with Muslim principles and techniques.

Wells Fargo blasted for 'predatory lending'

Wells Fargo & Co. may be holding its annual meetings outside its home turf in San Francisco of late, but the banking giant continues to attract controversy and protests no matter where it goes.

The bank's top brass were in San Antonio on Tuesday for the company's annual meeting, and although the event went smoothly, Wells Fargo still faced sharp questions over its mortgage practices.

About 40 people picketed outside a Wells Fargo branch a few miles away from the annual meeting. "Banks got bailed out; we got sold out," they chanted, holding "Stop Foreclosures" and "End Predatory Lending" signs.

"We're here because we want and demand accountability from Wells Fargo," said Lauren Rodriguez of the Texas Organizing Project, which she said fights for working families. "We won't accept anything less than an end to their predatory lending, abusive foreclosure practices and investments in private prisons."

"No other bank has forgiven $8 billion," said Stumpf, who received $19.3 million in compensation last year.

Woman admits tossing dog into traffic over dispute

A New Jersey woman has admitted killing her neighbor's small dog by throwing it into traffic during an argument over a parking space.

The Star-Ledger of Newark (http://bit.ly/1m7Jfwn) reports that 27-year-old Haniyyah Barnes, of Newark, pleaded guilty Tuesday to breaking into her neighbor's home in August 2011, grabbing the 2-year-old Shih Tzu named Honey Bey and throwing her into oncoming traffic. The dog was struck by a vehicle and killed.

She pleaded guilty to burglary, animal cruelty and theft charges and Essex County prosecutors will recommend that she receive a six-year state prison term when she's sentenced July 14. Barnes also would have to pay up to $2,600 in restitution and would be barred from owning, buying or living with animals for 10 years.

A Newark police officer who was sitting in a patrol vehicle saw what happened and immediately arrested Barnes, who acknowledged in court that the neighbor had followed her outside, begging her to stop and not hurt the dog.

White House opens door to tolls on interstate highways, removing long-standing prohibition

Source: Washington Post

With pressure mounting to avert a transportation funding crisis this summer, the Obama administration Tuesday opened the door for states to collect tolls on interstate highways to raise revenue for roadway repairs.

The proposal, contained in a four-year, $302 billion White House transportation bill, would reverse a long-standing federal prohibition on most interstate tolling.

Though some older segments of the network — notably the Pennsylvania and New Jersey turnpikes and Interstate 95 in Maryland and Virginia — are toll roads, most of the 46,876-mile system has been toll-free.

“We believe that this is an area where the states have to make their own decisions,” said Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. “We want to open the aperture, if you will, to allow more states to choose to make broader use of tolling, to have that option available.”

NYPD Charges 46 Subway Break Dancers With Reckless Endangerment

After recently learning that New York sleeps in later than every other city in the country, we’re wondering why the NYPD is trying so damn hard to get rid of subway break dancers.

Because what does a better job of waking New Yorkers up than dodging flailing legs on the L train at 9:00 a.m.?  Oh yeah, we have Starbucks for that.

But despite the fact that some New Yorkers enjoy a little artistic expression with their subway rides, the NYPD sees these entertainers as a danger to us all.

Official say that 46 subway break dancers have been charged with reckless endangerment so far this year. Another 50 have been charged with disorderly conduct, New York reports.

There were only two such charges of reckless endangerment committed by subway dancers in 2013.

New Yorkers Get to Work Later than All the Other Metro Areas

They say the early bird gets the worm, but who the hell wants the worm in a Big Apple?

The data lab over at Fivethirtyeight crunched some numbers, and found out New Yorkers on average get to work later than any other metro area in the United States. According to the study, the median time to arrive at work is 8:24 a.m.
