Stray bullets from Syria kill two Turkish citizens

One man and a 15-year-old boy were killed when they were hit by stray bullets from Syria in the Turkish border town of Ceylanpinar, Turkish security sources and health officials said on Wednesday.
The incident, which happened on Tuesday, was the most serious spillover of violence into Turkey in weeks and highlights the growing concern that Syria's civil war is dragging in neighboring states.
The bullets came from the adjacent Syrian town of Ras-al Ain, where Kurdish fighters have been battling Islamist anti-government rebels since Tuesday. Ceylanpinar, in southeastern Sanliurfa province, sits just across the border from Ras al-Ain.

The Kurds have been some of the US's best allies in Iraq and here they are fighting our jihadist of the Free Syrian Army. I would love to see the State Departments and DOD's game plan for the region. It seems contradictory and a waste of lives and money.

Lebanese officials say CIA warned them of imminent al Qaida attack on Hezbollah
The unusual warning – U.S. government officials are barred from directly contacting Hezbollah, which the U.S. has designated an international terrorist organization – was passed from the CIA’s Beirut station chief to several Lebanese security and intelligence officials in a meeting late last week with the understanding that it would be passed to Hezbollah, Lebanese officials said.
Hezbollah officials acknowledged the warning and took steps to tighten security in the southern suburbs that are known locally as Dahiya.
“Yes, a warning came from the CIA,” said a Hezbollah internal security commander who spoke on the condition that he not be identified because he was not authorized to talk to reporters. “They passed us this information through the mukhabarat (military intelligence), but we had our own information about the bombs.”
One Lebanese official who was at the meeting said the CIA warning included evidence that was “very convincing and scary” because it was so specific. The evidence included phone intercepts and very detailed information on a number of cells operating along Lebanon’s border with Syria, as well as inside Beirut itself.

The state Supreme Court refused Monday to halt the weddings of gay and lesbian couples in California, rejecting a request by the sponsors of a 2008 initiative that banned same-sex marriage.
Backers of Proposition 8 had turned to the state's high court last week after Gov. Jerry Brown ordered all 58 county clerks in California to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Brown acted two days after the U.S. Supreme Court's June 26 ruling that the initiative's private sponsors lacked legal standing to defend it in federal court.
The June 26 ruling reinstated an August 2010 decision by a federal judge that declared Prop. 8 to be an unconstitutional act of discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender. Brown issued his order hours after a federal appeals court lifted an injunction that had blocked the marriages.
In seeking an emergency stay, Prop. 8's sponsors argued that the federal judge's ruling applied only to the two couples who had sued to overturn the measure, and that Brown lacked authority to order county clerks to ignore the 2008 initiative.

U.S. Repeals Propaganda Ban, Spreads Government-Made News To Americans
Until this month, a vast ocean of U.S. programming produced by the Broadcasting Board of Governors such as Voice of America, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and the Middle East Broadcasting Networks could only be viewed or listened to at broadcast quality in foreign countries. The programming varies in tone and quality, but its breadth is vast: It's viewed in more than 100 countries in 61 languages. The topics covered include human rights abuses in Iran; self-immolation in Tibet; human trafficking across Asia; and on-the-ground reporting in Egypt and Iraq.
The restriction of these broadcasts was due to the Smith-Mundt Act, a long standing piece of legislation that has been amended numerous times over the years, perhaps most consequentially by Arkansas Senator J. William Fulbright. In the 70s, Fulbright was no friend of VOA and Radio Free Europe, and moved to restrict them from domestic distribution, saying they "should be given the opportunity to take their rightful place in the graveyard of Cold War relics." Fulbright's amendment to Smith-Mundt was bolstered in 1985 by Nebraska Senator Edward Zorinsky who argued that such "propaganda" should be kept out of America as to distinguish the U.S. "from the Soviet Union where domestic propaganda is a principal government activity."
Zorinsky and Fulbright sold their amendments on sensible rhetoric: American taxpayers shouldn't be funding propaganda for American audiences. So did Congress just tear down the American public's last defense against domestic propaganda?

Asiana to sue San Francisco TV station over names

Asiana announced Monday that it will sue a San Francisco TV station that it said damaged the airline's reputation by using bogus and racially offensive names for four pilots on a plane that crashed earlier this month in San Francisco.
An anchor for KTVU-TV read the names on the air Friday and then apologized after a break. The report was accompanied by a graphic with the phony names listed alongside a photo of the burned-out plane that had crashed at San Francisco International Airport on July 6, killing three and injuring dozens.
Video of the report has spread widely across the Internet since it was broadcast.
The National Transportation Safety Board has also apologized, saying a summer intern erroneously confirmed the names of the flight crew.

Oklahoma coalition forms to declare ‘Syria – Not our War!’
A diverse coalition of individuals have allied for an anti-war rally at the Oklahoma state Capitol. Theme of the gathering and related activities, slated for this evening (Friday, July 12), is “Syria – Not Our War!”
Coordinating the event -- which begins with musical entertainment at 6 p.m. and continues with a “left-right” spectrum of orations at 7 p.m. -- is state Rep. Paul Wesselhoft, R-Oklahoma City. Nathaniel Batchelder, director of The Peace House in Oklahoma City is assisting with organization.
The odd couple said they are opposed to U.S. government plans to support rebels seeking to oust the government of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad.
Wesselhoft and Batchelder joined forces with four others in a press conference this week, explaining their motivations to Capitol reporters.
Wesselhoft stressed, “I am not a pacifist, and not an isolationist.” A common theme among the speakers tonight will be to stress that the United States is already involved in the conflict – and that said involvement is a mistake.
A retired military chaplain, Wesselhoft points out that at least two of the groups in the rebel coalition opposing the Syrian strongman have close ties to al-Quaida, the terrorist organization that coordinated the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.
