Donald Trumps Populism Decoded: How a Billionaire Became the Voice of the Little People

Source:

A key factor in understanding American populists is their drive to regain a lost status they once held but no longer claim in our economy and culture.

Behavioral economics teaches us that people are far more motivated to avoid a loss than acquire a gain — and invest far more emotion to prevent a loss than benefit from a gain — which suggests that politicians who promise to reaffirm the status of erstwhile dominant constituencies will gain far more enthusiastic support than those who simply promise new and bigger programs to help people pursue their American dream.
And that was precisely the magic behind Donald Trump's 2016 campaign: he promised his supporters that the only way to "make America great again" was by restoring their status as the ones who made America great in the first place — which is exactly how they see themselves.

In particular, white working-class Americans — Donald Trump's base — were a constituency ripe for this message. To them, they were the real heroes of post-World War II America, the ones who made our prosperity and pre-eminence possible. Theirs is a narrative of an American century built by smokestack industries and sturdy white men with a blue-collar, lunch-pail ethic that would come to define the middle class of the post-war years.

What I ordered from CafePress.com yesterday

I live in Georgia, so it won't be safe for me to wear it anywhere but at home, but I feel better for having ordered it.

As Independence Day 2017 approaches...

I can honestly say I've never felt less patriotic than I do right now, due to the Marmalade Maniac and those who elected him. July 4 used to be my favorite holiday of the year. I've always looked forward to dressing in red, white and blue and wearing my fake sunglasses that have The Statue of Liberty on one side and the U.S. flag on the other. In the past, I've always changed my Facebook cover photo to something patriotic on July 4. The parades and other special programming that day have always been something I've enjoyed in the past. This year, I don't feel like doing or enjoying any of those things--and probably won't--again, due to the Marmalade Maniac and his supporters. I may rent a movie from Amazon Prime. I've already seen "The Brainwashing of My Dad" but somehow, it seems the most appropriate.

I has a sad.

.@realDonaldTrump is quicker to attack Americans who disagree with him than stand up to adversaries abroad. What happened to America First?

Am I the only one who...

when one of the cable news outlets mentions "The President", thinks briefly that they mean Obama? I don't know why I do it, but I catch myself thinking it sometimes.

Serious question for whoever has an answer

We all know about email addresses and social media accounts being compromised...but how does a telephone number get compromised? Context: I received a phone call today from "Microsoft" saying they had detected some sort of a problem with my computer and that I needed to follow their directions to "fix" the "problem." I know this is a scam and I've gotten several similar telephone calls over time. I always enjoy messing with the people on the other end of these calls until they eventually hang up in frustration over my refusal to give them the right answers.

After the guy who called today hung up on me, I called the number and asked to be put on their Do Not Call list. The lady on the other end told me they didn't have a Do Not Call list because they don't make outgoing calls. She asked me the reason for my request and I explained to her what had happened. She said that someone had apparently compromised their telephone number. So, back to my original question--how does a telephone number get compromised?
