Let banks fail: Iceland’s plan looks to be working

Let banks fail: Iceland’s plan looks to be working

Iceland let its banks fail in 2008 because they proved too big to save. Now, the island is finding crisis-management decisions made half a decade ago have put it on a trajectory that’s turned 2 percent unemployment into a realistic goal.

While the euro area grapples with record joblessness, led by more than 25 percent in Greece and Spain, only about 4 percent of Iceland’s labor force is without work. Prime Minister Sigmundur D. Gunnlaugsson says even that’s too high.

“Politicians always have something to worry about,” the 38-year-old said in an interview last week. “We’d like to see unemployment going from where it’s now — around 4 percent — to under 2 percent, which may sound strange to most other western countries, but Icelanders aren’t accustomed to unemployment."...

...Of creditor claims against the banks, Gunnlaugsson says “this is not public debt and never will be.” He says his main goal while in office is “to rebuild the Icelandic welfare state.” ...Successive Icelandic governments have forced banks to write off mortgage debts to help households. In February 2010, 16 months after Kaupthing Bank hf, Glitnir Bank hf and Landsbanki Islands hf failed, unemployment peaked at 9.3 percent. The rate was 4.2 percent in December, according to Statistics Iceland. In the euro area, unemployment held at a record 12.1 percent in November, Eurostat estimates....

"The Americans" returns Feb 26 on FX

One of the best shows of last year. FX is airing last season now.

The Americans is an American television period drama series created and produced by former CIA officer Joe Weisberg. The series premiered in the United States on January 30, 2013 on FX. The second season will premiere on February 26, 2014.

Set during the Cold War period in the 1980s, The Americans is the story of Elizabeth (Keri Russell-Felicity) and Philip Jennings (Matthew Rhys), two Soviet KGB officers posing as an American married couple in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. with their unsuspecting children (Holly Taylor and Keidrich Sellati), and their neighbor, Stan Beeman (Noah Emmerich), an FBI Counter-Intelligence agent. The series focuses on the personal and professional lives of the Jennings', sometimes incorporating real-life events into the narrative. The show's creator has described the series as being ultimately about a marriage.

"The most interesting thing I observed during my time at the CIA was the family life of agents who served abroad with kids and spouses. The reality is that mostly they’re just people going about their lives. The job is one element, and trying to depict the issues they face just seemed like something that, if we could bring it to television in a realistic way, would be new."
—Joe Weisberg, creator and showrunner of The Americans

Reception

The first season of The Americans received positive reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the first season received an 89% approval rating from critics, with a rating average of 7.9 out of 10.[28] On Metacritic, it scored 77 out of 100 based on 35 reviews. The American Film Institute listed it as one of the top ten television series of 2013. Rob Brunner of Entertainment Weekly described it as "an absorbing spy thriller".

Did she mention the DLC?

If not she's not being honest. It's that simple. She's trying to divide, not report.

The Rightwing Koch Brothers Fund the DLC
February 09, 2006

Do deep-pocketed "philanthropists" necessarily control the organizations they fund? ...Among these rightwing benefactors are the Koch brothers. But the Kochs have been working both sides of the fence. As Bill Berkowitz writes, the Koch brothers have also been funding the Democratic Leadership Council.

...This is no less stunning than if Scaife or the Coors family were funding the DLC. So do the Kochs just throw money at the DLC -- as long as the Council supports a free-market" (i.e. unrestricted/unregulated corporate power) agenda that the Kochs generally agree with. Or is it more than just that -- does this really buttress what Greens and other disaffected liberals contend -- that the DNC has just become a party of "Republicrats", thanks especially to the DLC? They would say that corporate backers like the rightwing/libertarian Kochs have co-opted the Democratic establishment -- a hostile takeover of (what was once) the opposition...

Koch Industries gave funding to the DLC and served on its Executive Council
8/25/2010 2:01pm by Joe Sudbay

... One member of the DLC’s executive council is none other than Koch Industries, the privately held, Kansas-based oil company whose namesake family members are avatars of the far right, having helped to found archconservative institutions like the Cato Institute and Citizens for a Sound Economy. Not only that, but two Koch executives, Richard Fink and Robert P. Hall III, are listed as members of the board of trustees and the event committee, respectively–meaning that they gave significantly more than $25,000.....

it's time to transform the Fed into a public utility

This 12 year old Canadian girl knows more than most Americans about banking.
Must see.

100 Years Is Enough: Time to Make the Fed a Public Utility
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ellen-brown/100-years-federal-reserve_b_4490472.html

The Federal Reserve Act was passed in 1913 in response to a wave of bank crises, which had hit, on average, every six years over a period of 80 years. The resulting economic depressions triggered a populist movement for monetary reform in the 1890s. Mary Ellen Lease, an early populist leader, said in a fiery speech that could have been written today:

Wall Street owns the country. It is no longer a government of the people, by the people, and for the people, but a government of Wall Street, by Wall Street, and for Wall Street. The great common people of this country are slaves, and monopoly is the master ... Money rules ... Our laws are the output of a system which clothes rascals in robes and honesty in rags. The parties lie to us and the political speakers mislead us..

Australian confronts Monsanto on TPP and GMO

Wikileaks Australian Citizens Alliance- WACA vs Monsanto: TPP Corporate Insider

Published on Jan 24, 2014

On Jan 23rd, WACA was joined by stand up comic and activist Shayne Hunter at Monsanto's Head Quarters in, Melbourne, Australia. We gained access to their office and after some creative thinking managed to get Mr Adam Blight, the man responsible for Monsanto's reputation in Australia and New Zealand to come out and speak to us.

As if Monsanto are not evil enough, they are also one of the key TPP Corporate insiders helping to draft the secret text. The TPP agreement is a corporate takeover of all 12 partnering Nations.

There is nothing this agreement won't effect, from food, agriculture, medicine, copyright, research and development, film and Media, all intellectual property, internet freedoms and environmental law.

This is an agreement written by corporations for corporations, that will enable corporations like Monsanto or Chevron or Halliburton to sue Governments who interfere with their investment and profitability, regardless of that countries desired policy or legislation. We urge citizens in TPP partnering Nations to confront their Government and the corporate insiders face to face. Demand they release the text to the public.

No TPP transparency, no TPP DEAL!

http://www.freesnowden.is/asksnowden/

Edward Snowden will be answering questions submitted by the public on his official support site, freesnowden.is, this Thursday 23 January at 8pm GMT, 3pm EST. The support site is run by The Courage Foundation and is the only endorsed Snowden Defence Fund.

This is the first Snowden live chat since June 2013 and will last for an hour starting at 8pm GMT, 3pm EST. Questions can be submitted on twitter on the day of the event using the #AskSnowden hashtag. Edward Snowden’s responses will appear at http://www.freesnowden.is/asksnowden

The live chat comes exactly a week after US President Barack Obama gave an address in response to the public concerns raised by Edward Snowden’s revelations about US surveillance practices. In the live chat, Edward Snowden is expected to give his first reaction to the President’s speech.

Courage (formerly the Journalistic Source Protection Defence Fund) is a trust, audited by accountants Derek Rothera & Company in the UK, for the purpose of providing legal defence and campaign aid to journalistic sources. It is overseen by an unrenumerated committee of trustees. Edward Snowden is its first recipient.

About solarhydrocan

Is it possible to get fuel from water? Of course it is. Water is H2O. Split the hydrogen from the oxygen and you have hydrogen. Put it in tanks and voila- fuel. Watch it happen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3GDjVskYIs The main cost is electricity. But if Solar Panels power the electrolysis the only cost is the panels and the water.
