At an Illinois campaign rally on Saturday, President Donald Trump again lied about crowd size.

Specifically, Trump more than doubled the size of the migrant caravan currently passing through Mexico.“If you look at that large group, sometimes it gets up to 17,000 people, they say,” Trump said. “Today they say it gets bigger and bigger—doesn’t make any difference because they’re not getting in…. They can’t come in.”

The UN says there are about 7,000 people in the caravan, less than half the number Trump claimed.

The number has also shrunk, not grown.

Saturday’s #WalkAway March on Washington had been hyped for months by Fox News and other conservative outlets.

The event—organized by a gay man named Brandon Straka who claims he was a liberal until being converted to Republicanism by Donald Trump—drew what supporters called “thousands” but which appeared to be only a handful of people at some points during the event’s livestream. Speakers included Clueless co-star Stacey Dash.

The event ended fittingly, with a folk singer named J.T. Wilde singing a song about the QAnon conspiracy theory to a few dozen people, several of whom sang along to his chorus of “Where We Go One, We Go All” after his intense prompting.

“They call us deplorable/and we love the name/ the bodies are in the dirt/and they need someone to blame,” Wilde sang. “They call it a conspiracy/cuz it’s the one last lie/we know who they are/and we’ve got them in our sights.”

Trump has said multiple times that he is doing the rally tonight because he remembers the significance of the NYSE opening the day after the 9/11 attacks. From what I can see, the NYSE opened Sept 17.

An internal memo from White House director of political affairs Bill Stepien suggests Trump’s team is making preparations to explain away a Republican loss of the House and position Trump to claim credit if the party holds onto control of the Senate or even expands its margin.

The memo stresses the challenging political climate for Republican incumbents, emphasizing the historical headwinds for the president’s party in midterm congressional elections, the large number of Republican incumbents retiring and Democratic challengers’ fundraising advantages. The memo says Democratic challengers out-raised incumbent House Republicans in 92 districts in the last quarter.

Stepien also argues that states in which incumbent Democratic senators have faced tough challenges are competitive “only because of Trump” and the Republican party has “no better messenger.”

The memo says Trump has raised $83 million for House candidates running for re-election this year, and that he has campaigned with House candidates in 18 competitive or open seat districts since Aug. 1.

The White House is lowering expectations that Republicans will maintain control of the House in the midterm elections — while positioning President Donald Trump to claim credit for any seats his party gains in the Senate.

White House political director Bill Stepien wrote a three-page memo this week in which he outlined the political landscape confronting the GOP and bluntly warned that the party’s prospects for the House are “challenging.”

“House Republicans’ goal this year is to minimize their losses,” he wrote in the memo, which was distributed to senior administration officials. A copy was obtained by POLITICO.

The warning comes as Republicans try to preserve a 23-seat majority, with dozens of GOP-held seats at risk in the Nov. 6 election. Many Republican officials concede their path to retaining their grip on the speaker’s gavel is narrow and believe they will suffer their greatest losses in suburban areas, where the president has proven to be a drag on GOP candidates.
