Defense files motion for a mistrial in Bridgegate

Source: CNN

(CNN)Defense attorneys in the federal court trial of two former officials who worked closely with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie surrounding the 2013 lane closures on the George Washington Bridge filed a motion for a mistrial on Thursday.

The motion filed by the legal counsel for Bridget Kelly and Bill Baroni, who are each charged with seven criminal counts including conspiracy and fraud, was nearly entirely redacted. Their attorneys and federal prosecutors in the case have convened inside a Newark, New Jersey, courtroom throughout the morning.

Thursday was slated to be the fourth day of deliberations for the federal jury assigned to the case.

Kelly, the former deputy chief of staff for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, and Baroni, the former Port Authority deputy executive director, are facing charges for their alleged involvement in a scandal that came to be known as "Bridgegate."

Megyn Kelly: Ailes tried to grab and kiss her, and when rejected, asked when her contract was up

“There was a pattern to his behavior,” Kelly writes. “I would be called into Roger’s office, he would shut the door, and over the next hour or two, he would engage in a kind of cat-and-mouse game with me — veering between obviously inappropriate sexually charged comments (e.g. about the ‘very sexy bras’ I must have and how he’d like to see me in them) and legitimate professional advice.”

Ailes didn’t stop there, however.

Kelly writes that he eventually started offering to advance her career in exchange for sexual favors, which she claims she turned down every time. Kelly then explains that Ailes took things even further than that in early 2006, when he “crossed a new line — trying to grab me repeatedly and kiss me on the lips.”

When she pulled away from him, Ailes issued what she interpreted as a veiled threat by asking her when her contract was up.

FBI Reportedly Basing Clinton Foundation Investigation On Breitbart's ‘Clinton Cash’ Book

FBI Reportedly Basing Clinton Foundation Investigation On ‘Clinton Cash’ Book

The Times story essentially details internal tensions at the FBI, which is faced with the need to pursue these investigations while navigating around the unwritten protocols about not interfering with the election. But here’s an interesting tidbit that emerges in the piece, 16 paragraphs down:

In August, around the same time the decision was made to keep the Manafort investigation at a low simmer, the F.B.I. grappled with whether to issue subpoenas in the Clinton Foundation case, which, like the Manafort matter, was in its preliminary stages. The investigation, based in New York, had not developed much evidence and was based mostly on information that had surfaced in news stories and the book “Clinton Cash,” according to several law enforcement officials briefed on the case.

The book asserted that foreign entities gave money to former President Bill Clinton and the Clinton Foundation, and in return received favors from the State Department when Mrs. Clinton was secretary of state. Mrs. Clinton has adamantly denied those claims.

Clinton Cash, penned by Breitbart News Senior Editor-at-Large Peter Schweizer, has been a controversial tome since it came into existence. Clinton defenders frequently point out that the supposedly densely researched book underwent numerous post-publication corrections for inaccuracies. Fact checkers have, at times, taken a dim view of the book as well. As The Guardian’s Ed Pilkington notes, the book is replete with instances in which Schweizer admits that he has no “smoking gun” to back up many of his claims, alongside a host of “cringe inducing” errors.

Kellyanne Conway doesn't appreciate threats from people who are "worried we may actually win"

Conway appeared on Blitzer’s CNN show later Wednesday and defended Trump, saying he didn’t intend to suggest that anyone be mean to Tur or to attack her.

“After he did that ... she was harassed by a lot of the people over there,” Blitzer said. “The last time we spoke, you told me you shared my concerns about the singling out of these embeds ... You said you would talk to him. How did that conversation go?”

“The conversation was very productive and I’ve also talked to NBC News today,” Conway said. “Look, we want fair coverage and we wan’t everybody to be safe at our rallies. I don’t appreciate a lot of the threats I get either from people who I guess are worried that we may actually win this thing.”

"Clinton is in a better place than Barack Obama was at this point in 2012."

New Polls Show Hillary Clinton Leading In Most Key States
Plenty of people seem ready to freak out, but the race remains as it was.

Political Twitter was a mess Wednesday afternoon, waiting for a single set of poll numbers. The highly respected Marquette University Law School Wisconsin poll (https://law.marquette.edu/poll/) could have framed the day’s narrative about the state of the presidential race.

Had the Marquette poll shown Republican nominee Donald Trump leading, tied, or even just close to Hillary Clinton, the Democratic panic narrative might have taken over the day, despite a plethora of polls in other states. In part, that’s because Marquette is the gold standard Wisconsin poll. In part it’s because Wisconsin is one of several states Trump probably needs to win, and gains there might indicate a watershed of support breaking loose for the GOP nominee.

*****

Okay, it’s not just about ratings. The polls do show that some states are close. But the level of panic that threatened to ensue if one poll showed Trump up in one state was baffling ― especially considering the other high-quality polls out on Wednesday. It shows just how uncertain politicos think this election is.

Yet Clinton is in a better place than Barack Obama was at this point in 2012. In the HuffPost Pollster chart, Obama widened his lead to just 1.5 percentage points over Mitt Romney nationally ― but that was good enough for Simon Jackman’s HuffPost model and Nate Silver’s FiveThirtyEight model to give Obama a 91 percent chance of winning. Obama’s odds in the states were good enough that he was predicted to get 332 electoral votes (which is what he got).

Conservative Group Raises Cash To Help GOP Senators Block Supreme Court Nominees
The Heritage Foundation has a policy arsenal ready to go in the event Hillary Clinton wins the presidency.

“Give Senators the procedural tools to block any liberal nominee,” reads one of the bullet points, which together read as a battle plan for lawmakers to follow in the event Trump loses the presidency.

Asked about this specific proposal, John Malcolm, the director of the Meese Center for Legal and Judicial Studies at Heritage, demurred on its significance.

”I’m not sure what that means,” he said, adding that his organization hasn’t taken an official position on whether Republicans should stonewall future nominations to the Supreme Court.

*****

“In fact, according to a new Heritage analysis of the Constitution and Senate procedure, it doesn’t require any more than a small number of principled conservatives to hold the line,” reads the missive. “We can use procedural strategies to block a nominee and even prevent the use of the ‘nuclear option’ to force through a nominee by majority vote.”

Tech billionaire Thiel says Trump movement ‘not going away’

http://www.rawstory.com/2016/10/tech-billionaire-thiel-says-trump-movement-not-going-away/

Billionaire technology investor Peter Thiel, a lightning rod for criticism in Silicon Valley for his support of Donald Trump, predicted on Monday that the movement the Republican presidential nominee has created would carry on even if he loses his bid for the White House on Nov. 8.

“No matter what happens in this election, what Trump represents isn’t crazy, and it’s not going away,” Thiel said in a speech to reporters at the National Press Club in Washington.

Thiel, who announced earlier this month he was donating $1.25 million to help Trump get elected, said the New York businessman was laying the groundwork for “a new Republican Party” that will go “beyond the dogmas of Reaganism.”

Thiel attacked Washington in his remarks, saying its elite insiders were out of touch with ordinary Americans and that Trump was shaking up a system in need of change.
