At her concession speech, Love recalled that Trump had attacked her for a lack of loyalty to him following the November midterms.

“Mia Love gave me no love,” Trump complained at the time.

“What did he have to gain by saying such a thing about a fellow Republican?” Love told a crowd of supporters on Monday. “Mr. President, we’ll have to chat about that. However, this gave me a clear vision of his world as it is. No real relationship just convenient transactions. That is an insufficient way to implement sincere service and policy.”

“This election experience and these comments [from Trump] shines a spotlight on the problems Washington politicians have with minorities and black Americans,” Love continued. “It’s transactional. It’s not personal. Politicians claim they know what’s best for us from a safe distance. Yet, they are never willing to take us home.”

“Because Republicans never take minorities communities into their home and citizens into their homes and into their hearts, they stay with Democrats and bureaucrats in Washington because they do take them home,” she added. “I’ve seen the cost to conservatives for not truly taking people into their hearts. Democrats saw newly-elected black members and women to Congress in this election. This is a matter of fact that Republicans lost in this regard.”

President Donald Trump is losing his personal aide, Jordan Karem, who plans to resign after less than a year on the job, according to people familiar with the matter.

Karem serves as Trump’s so-called “bodyman,” an aide who accompanies the president on travel and looks after his personal needs. He’s also a Trump confidant, familiar with his moods and thinking. The president relies on him for advice and to relay messages between Trump’s advisers inside and outside the White House, the people said.

Karem is often the first aide Trump sees in the morning and the last to see him at night. He joined the Trump campaign in July 2015 as an advance staffer before becoming press director for then-vice presidential candidate Mike Pence. He became Trump’s personal aide in March.

“The lesson for 2020 is that when he does and says outrageous things, assume that it’s on purpose and remember that you don’t need to fight every battle that he chooses,” said former Clinton campaign spokesman Brian Fallon. “In 2016, we thought a lot of the fights he selected for himself were so obviously disqualifying that we were happy to lean into them and indulge some of the controversies he stoked.”

“We underestimated how much turnout he was able to generate in white rural areas by having extended fights on the issues he wanted,” Fallon said. In the midterms, though, “people didn’t give in to the conversation about the caravan. Democrats successfully sidestepped Trump’s attempts to make that the all-consuming issue.”

The uncomfortable lesson for Democratic strategists is that large areas of the country embrace Trump’s bluster and nationalist message centered on fears of illegal immigration, crime and globalization.

Engaging with him on those terms, they say, merely helps that message break through to rural and working-class white voters -- and prevents Democrats from reaching the more diverse and less-frequent voters they rely on.
