Sen. David Perdue (R-GA) on SCOTUS: "I would never tell anybody how to vote but..."

GOP leaders are already advising Trump to draft a justice who is restrained in rhetoric and that the president try to appeal to moderates. Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas) said a nominee who stated to senators that he or she would “work hard to overrule these precedents … that’s going to cause a lot of problems” for centrist senators.

A buttoned-up justice with somewhat opaque views on hot-button issues might be more palatable to Murkowski and Collins, Cornyn suggested.

Though the duo rejected the GOP’s effort to nix Obamacare, they also voted for Gorsuch. And most Republicans anticipate they will ultimately get behind Trump’s next pick.

“I expect the Republicans to back the nominee, whoever it is,” said Sen. David Perdue of Georgia, a close Trump ally. “I would never tell anybody how to vote but this is one where the president’s demonstrated he will put forward a very reasonable candidate.”

My family & I are owed an apology. After 2 years, 15 hours of testimony before House & Senate under oath & producing more than 1000 documents, dossier misreports 15 allegations about me. My entire statement must be quoted- I had nothing to do with Russian collusion or meddling!

Sherrod Brown (D-OH) objects to amendment to take away much of Trump's power to impose new tariffs

Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), a leading liberal voice on trade issues and a potential presidential candidate in 2020, objected on Wednesday to a vote on an amendment that would have taken away much of President Trump’s power to impose new tariffs.

Brown, who is up for reelection this fall in a major steel-producing state, slammed an amendment backed by GOP Sens. Bob Corker (Tenn.) and Pat Toomey (Pa.) that would require congressional approval on tariffs that the president imposes based on national security concerns.

Brown’s objection spares Republicans from a showdown with Trump over trade, which Senate GOP leaders wanted to avoid. Republican leaders have argued that it does not make sense to clash with the president ahead of November's midterm elections, when turnout of the Republican base will be a key factor in determining which party controls the House and Senate.

The amendment would empower Congress to unwind the tariffs Trump has imposed on steel and aluminum imports from Mexico, Canada and the European Union.

Melanie has another photo op at Arizona baby jail, tells agents "I'm here to support you"

Melania Trump for the second time has traveled to Trump migrant concentration camp for children in Tucson, Arizona. On camera a Customs and Border Patrol agent told the First Lady “there have to be consequences” for those families attempting to enter the U.S., often to seek asylum.

“I’m here to support you,” the First Lady said at the televised event speaking to the agents of the federal Customs and Border Patrol, “and to give my help whatever I can, for, behalf of children and the families.”

“I know how dangerous and difficult your daily jobs are so I really appreciate all you do on behalf of the country,” the First Lady told the Customs and Border Patrol agents.

There was no discussion of the thousands of children the Trump administration has forcibly separated from their parents and families.

Trump has tweeted all of those words at me. He’s right that I am usually weak and often stupid and have lost much more than I’ve won, but some of the other Trump words about me aren’t completely true.
