Chicago TV station promotes Yom Kippur with image of a star that the Nazis forced Jews to wear

A Chicago TV station has apologized after it used an image of a star that the Nazis forced Jews to wear as the station aired a segment about Yom Kippur, the most solemn day in the Jewish year.

As anchor Tom Negovan reported a story about the holiday, which ran from Tuesday evening to Wednesday sundown, the image projected behind him was of the yellow patch on a background of white and blue stripes similar to the uniforms that Jews and other inmates wore in concentration camps.

A Twitter storm began almost immediately when Mark Larkinsky, an editor at Chicago Lawyer magazine, quickly tweeted his shock and amazement at the error.

"Holy crap,@WGNNews, this is your stock photo for a Jewish holiday?? Nobody thought that's a bad choice of photo?

Mom buys coffee for two women who mocked her

Mom buys coffee for two women who mocked her

Dianne Hoffmeyer visits the Fort Gratiot Tim Horton’s Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2015, after a Facebook post she made about an incident at the coffee shop went viral. (Photo: Submitted)

Dianne Hoffmeyer, was ordering doughnut holes for her 2-year-old and a cup of coffee for herself at Tim Horton's in Fort Gratiot, Mich., when she heard two women behind her commenting on her appearance. She said the women called her a "whale" and commented on her hair.

What the women didn't know, Hoffmeyer said, was that the doughnut holes she purchased were for her 2-year-old daughter, Liliana, who'd been up all night teething.

And the coffee was meant to be a pick-me-up after a long night with Liliana and an early morning doctor's appointment for the toddler. They also didn't know that Hoffmeyer, 41, recently had lost 177 pounds over 22 months after being diagnosed with congestive heart failure during her pregnancy with Lily.

"I was really mad and I'm usually not quiet," Hoffmeyer said. "I've got a big mouth." Instead of retaliating, Hoffmeyer held her tongue and paid for the women's coffee. She said her kids influenced her decision.

"Boehner Coup." Kinda rolls right off the tongue, doesn't it? "You know there’s blood in the water"

Growing chatter about a possible coup against Speaker John Boehner has set Capitol Hill on edge.

Talk that conservatives might use a government-funding showdown to overthrow the powerful Ohio Republican has triggered a flurry of behind-the-scenes jockeying among lawmakers eager to move up the leadership ladder.

And that has lawmakers wondering more than ever if Boehner’s days as Speaker are numbered.

“That’s what tells you there’s something afoot. You know there’s some drops of blood in the water, because all the sharks are starting to circle,” said one conservative lawmaker who backs Boehner's ouster.

Why Justice Antonin Scalia, you look like a gay couple just walked over your grave.

With less than two weeks before the start of the new Supreme Court session, Justice Antonin Scalia is still lamenting Obergefell v. Hodges, the June ruling that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.

At a Tuesday speech at Rhodes College, which his grandson attends, the justice blasted the decision, calling it the "furthest imaginable extension of the Supreme Court doing whatever it wants," according to The Associated Press.

Scalia dissented in the case, accusing the court of being a "threat to democracy" and the justices who ruled for a constitutional right to marriage for gay couples the "Ruler of 320 million Americans coast-to-coast." The speech at Rhodes seemed to signal that his dismay over gay marriage continues.

"Saying that the Constitution requires that practice, which is contrary to the religious beliefs of many of our citizens," Scalia said, "I don't know how you can get more extreme than that." He added, "I worry about a court that's headed in that direction."

The Donald: "I won't be doing any more Fox shows for the foreseeable future."

Is this really the end for Donald Trump and Fox News?

Trump, who leads Republican presidential polls, has had a tumultuous relationship with the network ever since the first GOP debate on Aug. 6 where he argued he was treated unfairly. Now, in a message on Twitter, he says he “won’t be doing any more Fox shows for the foreseeable future” due to unfair treatment.

I'd like to see a "three strikes" policy for trivial and petty "alerts."

I was on a jury this morning. Out of respect to the person who alerted, I won;t go into detail, but I will share the comment another juror posted when voting to "leave it"...

"This is just an opinion. Counter opinions are welcome, and expected. If you disagree, then state your disagreement and why. Censorship should bro left to truly malicious intent."

YES! Exactly! Why would we WANT it to be ANY OTHER WAY? But I guesss you'd have to ask this morning's alerter that same question.

I'd like to see a three strikes policy...the little weasels who "tell teacher" every time someone rubs them the wrong way get three shots in a three month period and if they insist on being Doug Nedemeyer, they lose posting privileges for a month. Or SOMETHING. But this weasel culture that is allowed to run rampant...and is actually encouraged by the present "jury" system...is an ongoing pain in the testicles and diminishes the overall experience of an otherwise excellent site. I do understand that the jury system is there to "enforce civility" when people fail to behave that way on their own. I'm just really sick of your giving the weasels, the stoolies, the narcs, the rats a free pass to be the sneaky little shits Dean Wormer warned us about.

Thanks for listening.

Petraeus grasps elusive concept of how giving classified info to your mistress is not a good thing

Caligula (1979): “Let them hate me, so long as they fear me.”

Retired Army Gen. David Petraeus issued an extraordinary public apology to Congress on Tuesday for sharing classified information with his biographer and mistress, saying it was a "violation of trust."

Petraeus appeared before the Senate Armed Services Committee to discuss the Middle East, in his first public testimony to lawmakers since resigning as CIA director. He started by addressing what led to his resignation.

"Four years ago, I made a serious mistake -- one that brought discredit on me and pain to those closest to me," Petraeus said, of sharing information with mistress Paula Broadwell. "It was a violation of the trust placed in me and a breach of the values to which I had been committed throughout my life."

Petraeus said he cannot "undo" what he did. "I can only say again how sorry I am to those I let down and then strive to go forward with a greater sense of humility and purpose, and with gratitude to those who stood with me during a very difficult chapter in my life."
