Jaime Harrison Is Ready to End Lindsey Graham’s Career in Congress

The rising Democratic star talks to Rolling Stone about campaigning in the time of Covid, helping shape a new era of politics in the South, and why he feels bad for his Trump-loving opponent

Ask the 44-year-old Democratic candidate for Senate in South Carolina just about anything and he’s likely to respond by way of a real-world example, either from his own upbringing in rural Orangeburg or from the lives of those he’s encountered throughout his career in politics. Since announcing his long-shot bid to unseat Lindsey Graham, Harrison has been regaling South Carolinians in an effort to convince them it’s time to turn the page on the three-term Senate Judiciary Committee chairman.

His approach to unseating Graham is simple. Show don’t tell.

Harrison believes Graham’s role as Trump’s most shameless sycophant in Congress has alienated the senator from the needs of his constituents, who have long lacked the kind of hands-on attention they deserve from their representatives. Though the pandemic has hampered Harrison’s plans to get into communities and demonstrate what they’re missing — which he planned to do through a tour of all 46 of the state’s counties and a public-service initiative dubbed “Harrison Helps” — his message is still resonating.

In August, Harrison raised a whopping $10 million, much of it from out of state, building on the $14 million he raised in the year’s second quarter, a total that nearly doubled the state’s previous Senate campaign fundraising record: the $7.3 million Harrison raised in the first quarter. “Lindsey Graham is a man who’s been in Washington for 25 years, a man who’s the golf buddy of the president of the United States,” Harrison says of his campaign’s improbable success. “A round-headed boy from Orangeburg, South Carolina, born to a teen mom, is out-raising that guy.”

If ignorance is bliss, then Sarah Sanders lives in a state of bliss beyond our comprehension.

The TWEET was bad enough.

Now she's followed it up with a video, where we once again get to hear those dulcet, belligerent tones, as she proudly and angrily proclaims the greatest love of all, Trump's love for our troops.

She got thoroughly hammered in the responses to her tweet, things like go away, no one believes a word you say, and every polite and vulgar variation of that imaginable.

So she doubled down, and the responses are even more emphatic to her video.

Now is not the time for a revisionist history of the work and legacy of this woman.

I think we need no further proof that Trump loves our Military, and that he would never say that they were "losers" and "suckers."

And if that wasn't enough for you, we have our beloved first lady, a former Slovenian immigrant who was granted citizenship via an "Einstein Visa," reserved for the creme de la creme, individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to society and the arts, who joined her husband in demanding to see Barack Obama's birth certificate. Trump LOVES the troops!

But if you still need further proof, we all woke up this morning to the President of the United States encouraging the MAGAts to harass a widow and private citizen because he was shown something in a magazine that he didn't like.

Sometimes you have to do the math and look past your hatred of Donald Trump to see what's really there, the kind and loving and presidential hard-working man who has sacrificed everything, including golf, and his fabulous billionaire lifestyle, to serve America without taking a salary because he loves America that much.

A President of the United States who is encouraging his followers to harass a widow and private citizen.
