A handful of Republican big-money groups on Friday launched hard-hitting ad campaigns targeting Donald Trump that echoed Marco Rubio’s Thursday night debate smack-down of the GOP presidential front-runner.
The group behind what’s expected to be the most expensive and sustained assault ― a super PAC dedicated to Rubio called Conservative Solutions PAC ― has raised about $20 million in the past week alone, sources tell POLITICO. They say the cash will power a full-frontal assault on Trump in the delegate-rich states that vote in March, starting with Tuesday’s 14 Super Tuesday contests.
Taken together, the wave of big-money attack ads, which could total in the eight-figures, suggests that deep-pocketed conservative groups and their donors see the March contests as their last chance to stop the billionaire real-estate showman from winning the GOP nomination and taking over the party.
That prompted puzzlement among some Cruz supporters, who had hoped the super PACs would follow Cruz’s lead. Some suggested that the disconnect between the campaign and the super PACs reveals the difficulty posed by federal coordination restrictions, which bar campaigns and big-money groups from working together on advertising strategy. Though Cruz has been ramping up his attacks on Trump for weeks, so it shouldn’t have been hard for the super PAC operatives to follow suit.

“I hacked your email on the plane and read everything you sent and received. I did it to most people on the flight.” He had verbatim detail of a long email that he repeated back to me essentially word for word.

McConnell will not meet with Obama's nominee

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Tuesday said he won't even meet with President Obama's nominee to the Supreme Court.
McConnell said Republican members of the Judiciary Committee unanimously recommended to him that there should not be confirmation hearings this year.
Senate Republican Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas) echoed that position.
“I don’t see the point of going through the motions and creating a misleading impression that something else is going on,” Cornyn said.

An eight-month McClatchy investigation in 11 countries on three continents has found that the U.S. wrongfully imprisoned dozens and perhaps hundreds of men in Afghanistan, Cuba and elsewhere on the basis of flimsy or fabricated evidence, old personal scores or bounty payments.
McClatchy interviewed 66 released detainees, more than a dozen local officials — primarily in Afghanistan — and U.S. officials with intimate knowledge of the detention program. The investigation also reviewed thousands of pages of U.S. military tribunal documents and other records.
This unprecedented compilation shows that most of the 66 were low-level Taliban grunts, innocent Afghan villagers or ordinary criminals. At least seven had been working for the U.S.-backed Afghan government and had no ties to militants, according to Afghan local officials. In effect, many of the detainees posed no danger to the United States or its allies.
The investigation also found that despite the uncertainty about whom they were holding, U.S. soldiers beat and abused many prisoners.

The case centers around whether the government can require Apple to write new software to compromise a key security feature of the company’s iOS mobile operating system. The government argues this is a one-off request that will aid an important terrorist investigation, while Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook has said it could lead to the government, criminals or other parties gaining the ability to “intercept your messages, access your health records or financial data, track your location, or even access your phone’s microphone or camera without your knowledge.”

Apple executives said on Friday that they tried to help law enforcement unlock the phone, including sending engineers to San Bernardino. Apple employees attempted to help investigators reconnect the handset to a Wi-Fi network that Farook had used in the past, a move that would allow the data to be available because the phone would automatically back up and move outside Apple’s encryption barriers. But the effort wasn’t possible because the iPhone’s Apple ID password had been reset by a county official after the shooting.
Had the password not been changed, Apple said the court battle wouldn’t have been necessary. Apple says its engineers could rewrite its software to circumvent its safeguards, but is refusing because executives believe it would weaken all iPhones. Encryption tools are necessary to protect customer data from hackers and data breaches, executives said.
Apple has previously complied with prosecutors when they had a court order under the All Writs Act, a law that compels third parties to take “non-burdensome” steps to help law enforcement carry out search warrants. Apple’s cooperation changed recently when a judge in Brooklyn, in a case involving the iPhone of an accused drug dealer, questioned whether the government can still rely on that law.

“We take this threat very seriously because the ruling party in Turkey is a party of war,” Rodi Osman, head of the Syrian Kurds’ newly-opened representative office said in Kurdish via a Russian interpreter. “Russia will respond if there is an invasion. This isn’t only about the Kurds, they will defend the territorial sovereignty of Syria.”
Conflicting interests in Syria have created a dangerous new phase in the country’s five-year war, even as world powers struggle to implement a truce agreement. Turkey fears Kurdish gains along its border will morph into an autonomous state and inspire similar ambitions among its own Kurdish minority. But a ground intervention risks conflict with Russia, which backs the Kurds militarily, and would anger the U.S., which sees the group as a major ally in the fight against Islamic State.
Turkey has been shelling Syrian Kurdish forces since the weekend, and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu blamed them for a bombing in Ankara that killed 28 people on Wednesday.

Cyclone Winston: strongest ever southern hemisphere storm hits Fiji

A state of emergency has been declared in Fiji as tropical Cyclone Winston made landfall on the country’s main island, with estimated wind gusts of up to 195mph (315km/h).
The category five storm is thought to be the strongest ever recorded in the southern hemisphere, and is the strongest Fiji has ever experienced.
An elderly man from Nabasovi, Koro Island is reported to have died as a result of the storm. Fiji Disaster Management Committee (DISMAC) officer Vatia Vasuca told FBC news the man died after a roof top fell on him.
Save the Children Fiji’s CEO, Iris Low-McKenzie, said the storm had the potential to cause “catastrophic damage” across Fiji, an island nation frequented by hundreds of thousands of holiday-goers every year. “We’re extremely concerned about the impact this will have on children, who are particularly vulnerable during emergencies,” she said.

SOCAL GAS BACKS OFF 48-HOUR RELOCATING PLAN IN PORTER RANCH
The months-long gas leak in Porter Ranch forced thousands of residents to relocate, but a controversial plan that would only give them 48 hours to return home once the leak was contained has been scrapped.
SoCal Gas agreed to provide housing for those displaced, but originally stated it would give residents 48 hours to move back into their homes once the leak was sealed.
"You can't move everybody out and then move everybody back," relocated resident Hedy Linder said. "You are dealing with children, schools and residents changing their entire lives."
The company has since backed off those plans.
