JJChambers's JournalThe difference between good regulation and bad regulation
I've seen a lot of alarmingly pro big brother, pro nanny-state proponent posts lately. This is concerning. Here are some examples:
Laws that ensure we all have equal rights in all aspects of our lives, and laws that ensure those rights are not infringed (good regulation!)
Laws that prohibit adults from doing things because the State has decided it knows better than you: examples would be the large soda ban, the e-cig puritans, and the marijuana prohibitionists (bad regulation!)
Feel free to add your own examples.
Lock him up and throw away the key
This is a candidate for life without, if I've ever seen one. He has been arrested at least 60 (sixty!!!!!) times, is wandering the streets and punches an 8 year old on the face in order to rob him of his iPad? Career criminals like this should NEVER see the light of day. He has had his chances.
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) Police say cell phones and other mobile devices are being stolen more often, but a violent robbery involving an 8-year-old boy had some people shaking their heads and a Minneapolis man leaping to action. Last Thursday, a boy was punched and the iPad in his hands was stolen outside a Minneapolis restaurant. Aaron Stillday, 32, was arrested and charged with first-degree aggravated robbery. Police caught him after a good Samaritan chased him down.
This is the scum of the earth, he said. You cannot hit a child like that. Dont hit him for his iPad, or for anything. Armeli, who works at a Greek restaurant nearby, heard the commotion and went after the robber. While talking to 911 on his cell phone, he chased Stillday for more than a half-mile. Police say theyve seen Stillday before. As I was told, hes been arrested 60 times, Armeli said. I cant believe they let him out.
Police have also seen this kind of crime before. While there isnt much left of the iPad it was smashed on the sidewalk its original value is what made it a target in the first place.

You know it is evidence
Whether or not Snowden attempted to alert superiors is certainly evidence of motive and it's a mitigating factor.
I never understood the Marissa Alexander defender brigade
I do understand the outrage about the Trayvon / Zimmerman case, and how justice was not served. But I fail to see why we should intentionally try to deny justice to Marissa's victims. Let us not forget the facts of this case, summed up by DU's own Hack89:
1. She was in the bedroom.
2. She left the bedroom and walked by her ex on the way to the garage, muttering " I have something for your ass."
3. She walked by the front door on the way to the garage - she could have escaped
4. She entered the garage, got her gun from her car.
5. She took that gun and went back into the house to confront her ex
6. She shoot just over his head into the ceiling. Her kids were standing next to the ex.
I also believe that since Marissa's shooting incident, she was released and then arrested for more domestic violence.
Marissa is a violent criminal who shot at her ex, missed, and later claimed it was a warning shot. She endangered his life and the lives of her children, who were also immediately present during the shooting. She deserves substantial prison time.
Can we stop pretending she is some righteous innocent victim railroaded by a corrupt and racist justice system? She's a violent criminal being prosecuted by a corrupt and racist justice system.
