House Republican rejects gun control, compares assault rifles to trucks

During an MSNBC interview on Tuesday, Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK) compared military-caliber firearms to trucks, and the risk of mass shootings like the one that resulted in 59 deaths and more than 500 injuries in Las Vegas on Sunday to the risk of getting run down by a vehicle.

Asked whether he shares concerns Democrats have expressed about the legality of semi-automatic rifles in the wake of the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, Cole said that he is not in favor of banning those sorts of weapons — in part because thousands of Americans already own them anyway.

Referring to semi-automatics, Cole said “there’s millions of them in circulation, and when they are used appropriately they are not dangerous.”

The host replied by pointing out that the carnage in Vegas suggests guns of that sort are more deadly than Cole would have people believe. But Cole replied by pointing out that many things are dangerous.

House GOP says Las Vegas massacre inspired them to crack down on reproductive rights

Source: Think Progress

In the aftermath of two recent acts of gun violence, the House GOP caucus has been inspired not to pursue gun control legislation that could prevent future mass shootings, but instead to crack down on reproductive rights.

“As we mourn the lives lost in Las Vegas this week, and welcome Whip Scalise back to Capitol Hill, we are reminded just how precious life is,” the GOP caucus writes in a blog post about new anti-abortion legislation approved by the House on Tuesday. “This message weighed heavily on the hearts of House Republicans as we spoke of the potential of life — especially lives cut short through abortion.”

The post goes on to discuss Republicans’ motivations for supporting the so-called Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protections Act, which, as CNN reports, “would criminalize abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, with exceptions for instances where the life of the mother is at risk and in cases involving rape or incest.”

The bill was approved by a largely party-line 237-189 vote in the House on Tuesday night. Though it has a harder path forward in the Senate, President Donald Trump has pledged to sign it if the legislation makes it to his desk.

Nominee for EPAs air office tells senator he is not familiar with climate data

Source: Think Progress

President Donald Trump’s nominee to head the Environmental Protection Agency’s air and radiation office told a Senate committee Wednesday that questions still exist about whether human activities are significantly contributing to climate change, a false claim that has made by countless other administration officials.

At his confirmation hearing, William Wehrum, an industry attorney with the law firm Hunton & Williams LLP, said he hasn’t seen enough data to be able to make a final judgment on humans’ role in the warming of the planet. In fact, climate scientists have high confidence that the majority — and likely all — of global warming since 1950 is due to human activity.

“Do you believe with high confidence that human activities [are] the main driver of climate change?” Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) asked Wehrum, who was nominated by Trump to be assistant administrator of the EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation.

“I believe that’s an open question,” Wehrum responded.

When Merkley showed this pin head the graphs, he should then request from the committee to bring forth the Kochs after he made this statement about this pin head playing the BS remark:

“What we have seen is this Koch Brother-inspired determination not to acknowledge even the most fundamental facts and continuous excuses that perhaps the temperature of the planet is going up because of solar activity … or volcanic activity,” Merkley said. “But when NASA presents the information that shows there’s no correlation from those factors and extensive correlation from carbon dioxide and other global warming gases. Individuals like you simply refuse to acknowledge it.”

So far Weham, this country in the last three hurricanes (2017) will have spent over 75 billion dollars and climbing..........your an idiot..

GOP Senator John Thune to shooting victims: To survive, get small

Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., had some strange advice to those who may be faced with an active shooter situation: "Get small."
Following the country's largest mass shooting in modern history, Thune was faced with questions on gun control measures, and whether or not Republicans will take action.

"It sounds like [the shooter] used conversion kits and other things, you know, to make the weapons more lethal," Thune reportedly told MSNBC's Hallie Jackson. "We’ll look at the facts when we get them all in here. I think a lot of us want to do everything we can to prevent tragedies like that from happening again."

It's been confirmed that shooter Stephen Paddock was in possession of two bump-stocks, which enhance a semi-automatic gun to make it behave more akin to a full automatic — though despite possessing bump-stocks, it is still unclear if the devices were actually used during Paddock's attack. Bump-stocks are legal to possess.

Congressman who reportedly pressured his mistress to have an abortion votes for extreme abortion ban

Source: Think Progress

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Tuesday afternoon that Rep. Tim Murphy (R-PA), a darling of the anti-choice movement, had pressured a woman with whom he was having an affair to get an abortion. Hours later, Murphy was one of 237 House representatives who voted in favor of extreme anti-abortion legislation.

The bill, entitled the “Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act,” would criminalize abortions after 20 weeks based on the junk science belief that fetuses can feel pain after that point. It is sponsored by Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ). Murphy is one of the legislation’s 182 co-sponsors.

The legislation passed the House 237-189. It has twice passed the House in the past.

IRS rewards Equifax with multi-million dollar fraud-prevention contract after massive data breach

Source: Think Progress

Credit monitoring firm Equifax has been awarded a $7.25 million no-bid contract to help prevent fraud, despite the fact that the company is reeling from a security breach that exposed the personal data of more than 145 million Americans.

The breach, which was discovered in July but not made public until September, is believed to be one of the largest identity thefts in American history. Credit card numbers, names, addresses, driver’s license and Social Security numbers were all exposed, enabling hackers to buy and sell the information over the internet for years to come.

But despite this massive cyber-security lapse, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) still awarded the company a multi-million dollar contract on September 30 — the last day of the fiscal year — to “verify taxpayer identity and to assist in ongoing identity verification and validation needs of the Service,” Politico reported Tuesday.

The contract was described as a “sole source order,” meaning Equifax was the only company capable of providing the service, according to Politico. “This is considered a critical service that cannot lapse,” the contract added.

'No law can fix stupid': Congress slams former Equifax CEO for data hack

Source: The Guardian

Equifax’s “lax attitude” to protecting consumers’ data came in for sharp criticism on Tuesday as Congress grilled the credit agency’s former chairman and CEO over the company’s failures in the wake of a massive data breach.

The credit company yesterday clarified that at least 145.5 million people had their personal details, including credit card numbers, social security details, addresses, emails, mother’s maiden names exposed after one of the biggest hacks in US history.

Former CEO Richard Smith outlined steps the credit reporting company is taking to regain the nation’s trust at an appearance before a House subcommittee on Tuesday morning, the first of several he will be making over the course of the week.

Equifax has been heavily criticised for its response to the breach and congressman Frank Pallone said Equifax had an “ongoing lax attitude when it comes to protecting consumer data”.

He warned Smith that “if Equifax wants to stay in business, its entire corporate culture needs to change to one that values security and transparency.”

Congressman Paul Tonko said American now faced “a lifetime of risk” because of Equifax’s errors.

A majority of the Supreme Court appears ready to strike down a partisan gerrymander

Gill vs. Whitford is the most important case the Supreme Court has heard in years. As Paul Smith, the attorney arguing against Wisconsin’s gerrymandered maps in Whitford, told the Court, if the justices allow such aggressive gerrymanders to persist, “the country is going to lose faith in democracy.”

Whitford involves the Wisconsin state assembly maps — maps that were drawn to make it virtually impossible for Republicans to lose their majority. As the lower court, which struck down those maps, explained, “in 2012, the Republican Party received 48.6% of the two-party statewide vote share for Assembly candidates and won 60 of the 99 seats in the Wisconsin Assembly. In 2014, the Republican Party received 52% of the two-party statewide vote share and won 63 assembly seats.”

The question in Whitford is fundamental: whether the state of Wisconsin will once again become a democracy, or whether only one party is allowed to make laws in that state.

The good news for Smith, and for other opponents of partisan gerrymanders, is that there appear to be five votes to strike down Wisconsin’s maps. Justice Anthony Kennedy, the Court’s “swing” vote in this case, asked a number of critical questions of the lawyers defending the gerrymandered maps and literally no questions of Smith. At one point, he appeared to grow angry with an attorney defending the maps for not answering one of his questions.

Tom Pettys progressive politics wont be forgotten

Tom Petty was the soundtrack to my childhood. His unique voice, with that nasal quality and a distinctive Florida twang, always sounded like it was searching for something, but that it was also resigned to never finding it. It was perfect for long family car trips in my dad’s black pickup truck. Sometimes the trip itself — sitting silently and letting the music wash over us — was more fun than the hiking or fishing plans we made. That seemed appropriate, since Petty’s music allowed us to sit in our pain for a moment, to fully feel it.

The stories and themes of his music were often vague enough that it could apply to a wide variety of people and experiences. But his music is still often considered “dad rock,” which I suppose is appropriate given the fact that every dad I know, including my own, loves him. I texted my dad the moment I learned Petty was hospitalized for cardiac arrest. But the idea that his music is only for white middle class dads, which suggests that it is never politically charged, doesn’t acknowledge Petty’s own progressive political views, which he never hid for the sake of making more money, or his willingness to learn from mistakes instead of bemoaning “political correctness.” It also misses some of the main messages of his songs and the ways his songs can be interpreted for a younger generation.

Tom Petty himself was open about his political views. Petty did not constantly speak about his politics or use his politics to sell his music, but he never hid his fairly progressive political views. In his recent tour for the 40th anniversary of his band, Petty showed a number of photos of a diverse group of women while he sang the song, “American Girl.” And whether he intended to or not, Petty sent a message of support to transgender people by showing a photo of late transgender actress Alexis Arquette hours after Trump sent out a tweet about banning transgender people on the military.
