Dozens of local police departments are reportedly checking the immigration status of people they arrest as part of the Trump administration’s crackdown on undocumented immigrants, according to a Reuters investigation through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.
Since Trump’s inauguration in January, 29 police departments have joined a federal program that grants local law enforcement authorities the authority to question and to detain suspected undocumented immigrants and turn them over to federal authorities for potential deportation proceedings. An additional 38 jurisdictions told Reuters that they had already applied or were “potentially interested” in joining the program, known as 287(g). The number of interested jurisdictions was not previously reported, according to the publication.
According to Reuters’ analysis, the police departments that joined or expressed interest in joining oversee small populations, “typically fewer than 100,000 residents, with small immigrant populations.” Police departments in places like New York, NY and Los Angeles, CA — which have large populations and large foreign-born populations — have thus far limited federal cooperation and promised to defy Trump’s executive orders to increase the number of detentions and deportations of immigrant populations.

One of President Donald Trump’s top cabinet officials has met with a long list of lobbyists, corporate executives and wealthy people with business interests before the government, according to calendars the Trump administration fought to keep secret.
The calendars for Mick Mulvaney, the former South Carolina congressman who now runs the White House Office of Management and Budget, offer a glimpse of who has access to the highest levels of the Trump administration.
Among those visiting Mulvaney: Trump friend and casino magnate Steve Wynn; a flurry of officials from the conservative Heritage Foundation; a string of health care and Wall Street CEOs; lobbyists for Koch Industries; a cryptocurrency evangelist; and a prominent member of the Catholic group Opus Dei.
The Trump administration fought in court to block public records requests by Property of the People, a Washington-based nonprofit transparency group, to release the calendars as well as visitor logs from several other White House offices. Lawyers for the group ultimately prevailed and provided the documents to ProPublica, which we are posting in a searchable format.

North Atlantics greatest survivors are hunted once more
One of the more hopeful ecological stories of recent years – the slow restoration of numbers of the North Atlantic right whale – has taken a disastrous turn for the worse. Marine biologists have found their population has plunged abruptly in the past few years and that there may now only be around 100 reproductively mature females left in the sea. Many scientists fear the species could soon become the first great whale to become extinct in modern times.
The principal cause for the North Atlantic right whale’s precipitous decline has been the use of increasingly heavy commercial fishing gear dropped on to the sea bed to catch lobsters, snow crabs and hogfish off the east coast of North America. Whales swim into the rope lines attached to these sea-bed traps and their buoys and become entangled. In some cases hundreds of metres of heavy rope, tied to traps weighing more than 60kg, have been found wrapped around whales. “We have records of animals carrying these huge loads – which they cannot shake off – for months and months,” said Julie van der Hoop, of Aarhus University in Denmark.

“This year turns out to have been catastrophic for right whale losses,” said Ann Pabst, of the University of North Carolina in Wilmington. “We know of at least 16 right whales that were killed from entanglement, and there could be more that we haven’t found about yet.”
An example of the tribulations suffered by right whales is provided by the story of Ruffian, a 13-year-old male who was discovered entangled in 138 metres of rope and a 61kg snow crab trap, which he had dragged from Canada to Florida over a period of several months. He was eventually freed by divers from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. “I am surprised Ruffian survived given the calories he had lost in dragging around that weight,” said van der Hoop.

A new bird species is seen emerging in real-time
Scientists have directly documented a new species evolving in the wild for the first time, according to the BBC. Fittingly, the event was seen in Galapagos Island finches, the same group of birds that helped Darwin solidify his theory of evolution. The research, published Thursday in the journal Science, started in 1981, when a single male from a different finch species came to the tiny island of Daphne Major.
Why it matters: This is the first time the formation of a new species has been observed in real-time in the wild. More than that, it shows how just a single individual can breed with one from another species, leading to the creation of a new species.
For several decades, scientists have been meticulously documenting minute changes in different finch species on the Galapagos Islands, an archipelago that's been referred to as a "natural laboratory for evolution."
How it started: The initial hybridization event happened in 1981 on the Galapagos island of Daphne Major, where evolutionary biologists Peter and Rosemary Grant conducted most of their research. They studied the group so closely that they noticed when a male large cactus finch, native to a different island 65 miles away, arrived on the island and began breeding with a local population.
What happened: Native females didn't recognize the songs of the new hybrid males, so instead of breeding with the local population as expected, the hybrids bred within their population. This paper shows that after just two generations, they stopped breeding with other populations and have remained reproductively isolated ever since.
Taking off: "In most cases, the offspring of cross-species matings are poorly adapted to their environment," writes Rory Galloway for the BBC. But the large size of these hybrids has allowed them to exploit resources the native birds weren't using, so the birds have flourished.

Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) casted a pivotal vote over the summer, where she — along with Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME) and John McCain (R-AZ) — saved the Affordable Care Act (ACA) from being repealed. She didn’t just vote against repeal once; she voted against three different G.O.P. health bills and shot down another in September.
But on Tuesday, she said she supports legislation that most health experts say will undermine the current health law. In an op-ed in the Daily News-Miner, Murkowski said she supports Republican tax legislation that repeals the individual mandate, an ACA provision that requires people to have insurance or pay a tax penalty ($695 or 2.5 percent of income, whichever is more).
“I believe that the federal government should not force anyone to buy something they do not wish to buy in order to avoid being taxed,” wrote Murkowski. “That is the fundamental reason why I opposed the Affordable Care Act from its inception.” Repealing the individual mandate provides relief to those penalized for not purchasing unaffordable insurance, she added.

NY AG probing massive scheme to influence FCC with fake net neutrality comments
New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman (D) is investigating what he calls a massive scheme to corrupt the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) with fake public comments on net neutrality.
In an open letter to Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai, the Schneiderman said the agency hasn't provided him with information "critical" to an investigation his office is conducting.
Schneiderman said in a tweet his office has been investigating a "massive scheme" over the last six months to "corrupt the FCC's comment process on net neutrality by impersonating 100,000s of real Americans."
