GOP congressman elected 23 times in deep red Alaska now trails Democrat

By Eric Boehlert - November 5, 2018

Don Young's controversial four-decade career may be coming to a close.

If there’s a Democratic blue wave on Tuesday, Republican Rep. Don Young’s run as the longest-serving current member of Congress could come to an end.

Representing the deeply red state of Alaska, Young was first elected to Congress in 1973 and has been re-elected 22 times in a row after that.

But now, as the Trump backlash swells from Maine to Alaska, Young suddenly trails his Democratic opponent, first-time candidate Alyse Galvin.

A public education advocate, Galvin “is one of the strongest challengers Young’s ever had,” notes Alaska Survey Research, which conducted the latest survey.

She’s matched the veteran politician’s fundraising nearly stride-for-stride this campaign.

Although statistically the race is a tie, with Galvin ahead by just 1 point, that’s still a remarkable place for Young to be right before Election Day.

I hope today after all is said and done I will be able to say good fucking riddance to him and 235 other fucking right wing assholes in the house, and 8 in the senate .....................they still haven't figured out that it is going to be the "Year of the Woman"

North Dakota tribal leaders: Different Nations are working together to propel Heitkamp to victory

"Even though we are sovereign nations, we all rise together. It is actually a beautiful thing.”
DANIELLE MCLEAN
NOV 5, 2018, 1:22 PM

ST. MICHAEL, NORTH DAKOTA — North Dakota’s Native peoples are united behind Sen. Heidi Heitkamp and determined to translate that support into votes on Tuesday, despite the state’s restrictive voter ID laws that is making it harder for them to cast ballots, elected leaders of two tribal nations said.

That’s because Heitkamp (D-ND) has listened to Native voices, while her Republican opponent Kevin Cramer (R-ND) and other leading Republicans — including President Trump — are viewed negatively by many tribal people.

Heitkamp’s “got the support. I know Cramer might have a couple of people but she’s got the support,” Myra Pearson, chair of Spirit Lake Sioux tribe, told ThinkProgress.

“I think our people now are woke and they are standing up and they are not only getting out to vote but they are also looking at all the candidates,” said Jamie Azure, chair of Turtle Mountain Nation. He estimated 70 to 80 percent of the tribe votes Democrat, which is why Republicans targeted Native Americans with the voter ID laws.

However, their efforts have backfired, said Azure. So far, Turtle Mountain has issued 2,000 new IDs since the 2016 election, meaning far more tribal members will be able to vote on Tuesday than did two years ago.

Watch GOP Senate nominee lie shamelessly about pre-existing conditions

By Tommy Christopher - November 4, 2018

When Republicans voted to gut protections for people with pre-existing conditions, Martha McSally cheered, 'Let’s get this f--king thing done!'

Rep. Martha McSally (R-AZ), the GOP nominee for Senate in Arizona, is the latest Republican to deal with her bad record on health care by simply lying about it.

American Bridge recently posted video of a woman asking McSally why she voted to strip protections for people with pre-existing conditions.

“I did not, that’s a lie,” McSally replied sharply. “I voted to protect them. And we have people right now who don’t have coverage.”

This is not the first time that McSally has told this lie; she has even claimed to be “leading the fight” to protect people with pre-existing conditions.

But as Politifact pointed out, McSally voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), which prevents insurers from discriminating against people because they’re sick.

Hey McSally.......................is that really how you treat a constituent that asked you a basic question................on your lying, you move them along................if it was me, I would not have moved.................I would have said your record speaks otherwise.............................my father and step mother live in your state, they are retired and you want to gut there Social Security and Medicare to pay for your 1.5 trillion dollar tax cut........ ......................he served his country more honorably than you did, Korea, you lived off the taxpayer funded health care for years correct while in the military and you lived off the taxpayers dole as a congresswoman having that health care system...............you really are a piece of work........you really like when someone else pays your bills, but when it comes time for millionaires and billionaires to pay there fair share or for you for that matter, you tell everyone a LIE and tell them to go stick it, move along ........with your of bullshit.....................bull shit...... means that your a LIAR.....................

The importance of civics lessons..................

What is truly remarkable is the Neil Gorsuch sat there and gave the country his Federalist Society interpretation of the Constitution and on voting, with his head bobbing up and down with that fucking shit eating grin, and that CBS had the audacity to have a person that should not even being sitting on this bench is outrageous, to normalize this crap..................FUCK YOU CBS............... .

The U.S. Supreme Court just denied The Native Americans in North Dakota the right to vote, who are a Sovereign Nation within the Constitution, and this moderator sitting there and giving everyone a civic lesson on voting........................BULLSHIT............he is the "guy" that oversees appeals in North Dakota ...............................

Justice Sonia Maria Sotomayor was right about voting, but to have someone sitting there right along side her on the fucking premise that due process was denied to another nominee, and people....................is just plain fucked up

Ivanka Trump shows yet again she's no friend to women

Arwa Mahdawi

The first daughter is supporting Republican Kim Reynolds in Iowa – the acting governor whose record on women’s rights in horrific

By campaigning for Kim Reynolds, Ivanka Trump shows yet again she is no friend to women

First daughter, presidential adviser and failed shoe entrepreneur Ivanka Trump is hard at work empowering women! On Friday she headed to Iowa to campaign for Kim Reynolds, a Republican who became acting governor of the state last year, when Terry Branstad resigned to become US ambassador to China. Reynolds is facing off against the Democrat Fred Hubbell, a wealthy businessman who hasn’t run for public office before, and it’s a tight race.

If Reynolds wins she will be the first woman elected as governor in Iowa. But that would be nothing to celebrate. Having more women in office means nothing if those women enact regressive policies. And Reynolds’ horrific record on women’s health is a sign she would do just that. She has already been applauded by conservatives for signing the strictest abortion ban in America, which bars doctors from performing most abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected. That’s normally a mere six weeks into a pregnancy.

Ivanka hasn’t made her views on abortion clear. “I don’t talk about my politics,” she said when asked to take a clear yes-or-no stand on the issue in a 2016 radio interview. However, her support for Reynolds is just the latest sign that Ivanka is against women having the right to choose. Last year, for example, Planned Parenthood’s president, Cecile Richards, wrote in her memoir that Jared Kushner and Ivanka offered her what she felt to be a “bribe”: Planned Parenthood could keep its federal funding if they stopped providing abortions.

Despite the fact that she is basically a female version of her father, Ivanka continues to portray herself as a champion of women, flying around the world to talk about female empowerment. One of the most important ways to empower women, however, is to give them control over their reproductive rights. Ivanka’s support for Reynolds, who is doing everything she can to take those rights away, is yet another reminder that Ivanka is no friend to women.

Kobach embraces deeply unpopular former governor who bankrupted Kansas

By Eric Boehlert - November 2, 2018

The Kansas governor's race is unfolding as a referendum on Sam Brownback's disastrous run.

This week, when the debate moderator asked the three candidates for Kansas governor to raise a hand if they thought former Republican Gov. Sam Brownback did a good job in office, only the hand of Kris Kobach shot up.

The fact that Kobach, a Republican Trump loyalist, is locked in a toss-up race with Democrat Laura Kelly in the deeply red state of Kansas, which Trump won Kansas by 20 points, is largely because next week’s election is unfolding as a referendum on Brownback and his wildly controversial seven-year tenure as governor.

Kobach is not only standing by Brownback’s side, as the raise-your-hand debate moment captured, but he’s pledging to bring back Brownback’s failed tax experiment agenda, which bankrupted the state.

Kobach’s onboard for all of it, as he pledged “full throttled conservatism.” That means revisiting the doomed governor’s blueprint of slashing taxes and dramatically cutting state spending, which would further eviscerate state services.

A Hundred Years After the Armistice

November 5, 2018 Issue
If you think the First World War began senselessly, consider how it ended.
By Adam Hochschild

For millions of soldiers, the First World War meant unimaginable horror: artillery shells that could pulverize a human body into a thousand fragments; immense underground mine explosions that could do the same to hundreds of bodies; attacks by poison gas, tanks, flamethrowers. Shortly after 8 p.m. on November 7, 1918, however, French troops near the town of La Capelle saw something different. From the north, three large automobiles, with the black eagle of Imperial Germany on their sides, approached the front lines with their headlights on. Two German soldiers were perched on the running boards of the lead car, one waving a white flag, the other, with an unusually long silver bugle, blowing the call for ceasefire—a single high tone repeated in rapid succession four times, then four times again, with the last note lingering.

By prior agreement, the three German cars slowly made their way across the scarred and cratered no man’s land between the opposing armies. When they reached the French lines, they halted, the German bugler was replaced by a French one (his bugle is in a Paris museum today), and the German peace envoys continued their journey. At La Capelle, flashes lit up the night as the envoys were photographed by waiting press and newsreel cameramen, then transferred to French cars. Their route took them past houses, factories, barns, and churches reduced to charred rubble, fruit trees cut down and wells poisoned by retreating German troops. “It appeared to me that the drive was intentionally prolonged in order to carry us across devastated provinces and to prepare us for the hardest conditions which the feelings of hatred and revenge might demand,” one of the German passengers later wrote. The envoys next boarded a railway carriage that had once belonged to Napoleon III, who was forced to surrender most of Alsace and part of Lorraine to Germany in the Franco-Prussian War.

Finally, the train pulled into a clearing in the forest of Compiègne, near another train occupied by an Allied delegation headed by Marshal Ferdinand Foch, the Allied commander-in-chief, a diminutive Frenchman with an immense, shaggy mustache. The two groups met in Foch’s train, in what was formerly the dining car of a luxury sleeper service. The German delegation was headed by a civilian cabinet minister, but the high command was desperate to avoid blame for a humiliating end to the war, and the military representatives were relatively junior: a major general and a Navy captain.

The German Army had asked for peace talks because it knew that it was fast losing the war. Germany had already seen the surrender of its two major allies, Ottoman Turkey and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which was rapidly fragmenting as one ethnic group after another declared its independence. The most powerful German commander, General Erich Ludendorff, had had a nervous breakdown, raging at his staff, drinking heavily, and suffering panic attacks; a hastily summoned psychologist advised flowers in his office and the singing of folk songs when he woke in the morning. He had resigned in late October, and fled the country wearing a false beard and blue spectacles. In rear areas, tens of thousands of German troops were deserting. On the Western Front, the Allies had been gaining ground since midsummer. And mutinous crews in the German Navy, ordered to sea for a suicidal last-ditch foray against the British, seized control of their ships, ran up the red flag, arrested their officers, and made common cause with rebellious workers and soldiers ashore.

Next Sunday Marks 100 years since the last "Great War" to end all wars

Armistice: two men separated by four years of war and a few yards of turf

The graves of the first and last British soldiers to die in the first world war face each other in a Belgian cemetery

The full four years of the first world war separate the deaths of 16-year-old John Parr from Finchley, north London, and 40-year-old George Edwin Ellison, a son of Leeds.

Between the firing of the bullet that killed Parr and the ringing out of the shot that struck Ellison down, about 750,000 British soldiers were killed. In a remarkable coincidence, just a few yards of lawn stand between the two men’s graves today.

The bodies of these men, the first and last British soldiers to die in the 1914-18 conflict, face each other in the cemetery of St Symphorien, a plot covered by pine trees, Japanese maples and red roses, on the outskirts of the Belgian city of Mons.

Parr, killed by rifle fire on 21 August as he scouted ahead on his bicycle in the first tentative British advance on the city, was buried by the Germans here on ground donated by a Belgian landowner after it was decided by Kaiser Wilhelm’s government in 1917 to honour all those, on both sides, who had died in the area.

The remains of Ellison, who was killed 90 minutes before the armistice in a last pointless advance when it was clear to all that they were on the cusp of peace, were brought here from a field grave by the British in the 1920s. There was no knowledge at the time of the significance of the plot opposite.

The circularity and symbolism of the two men’s deaths by German guns near the same fields in south-west Belgium will not be lost as the world marks the centenary of Armistice Day.

Buffett's Berkshire doubles profit, repurchases $900 million stock in third quarter

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Berkshire Hathaway Inc, the conglomerate run by billionaire Warren Buffett, on Saturday said its quarterly operating profit doubled as its insurance business dodged hurricanes and benefited from lower taxes.

The strong result gives Buffett more cash to deploy even as the well-known bargain-hunting “value” investor has admitted struggling to find a place to put those earnings to work and resorted to buying back $928 million in his own company’s stock in the latest quarter.

Operating profit in the third quarter doubled to $6.88 billion from $3.44 billion a year earlier, and higher than the $6.11 billion expected by Wall Street, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.

Helping the company’s insurance operations were lower estimated liabilities from property and casualty insurance in prior years and lower taxes. The year prior included major losses due to three U.S. hurricanes and an earthquake in Mexico.

Insurance underwriting income was $441 million in the third quarter, compared to a loss of $1.4 billion in the year-ago period.
