Scott Walker Signals He'll Sign Off On GOP's Power Grab Bills If They Pass

Source: Talking Points Memo

As Republican lawmakers in Wisconsin move forward Tuesday with plans to rush votes on bills to lock in their power during the lame duck session, outgoing Gov. Scott Walker is affirming he’s on board.

“For all the talk about reining in power, it really doesn’t,” Walker told reporters about Democrats’ complaints on Monday evening, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

The Republican governor signaled that he is willing to sign off on the wide-ranging package of bills before he leaves office Jan. 7.

Protests roiled the Capitol in Madison on Monday, as Wisconsin voters came out to express their opposition to the proposals. The Journal-Sentinel reported that after some 10 hours of testimony and debate, the Joint Finance Committee approved three bills that would transfer key powers from Democratic Gov.-elect Tony Evers and Democratic incoming Attorney General Josh Kaul to the GOP-controlled legislature.

Opposition Builds To Interior Department Records Purge

Group Says Documents Reveal Efforts to Kill Wild Horses, Land Grabs and Other Outrages
By Sarah Okeson

A nonprofit advocating for wild horses, one of the groups opposing a massive proposed document purge at Trump’s Interior Department, said record requests helped the nonprofit learn about a plan to send thousands of wild horses to a tiger refuge in Russia.

“These records are especially important for oversight now that large numbers of wild horses and burros are being ‘adopted’ in larger numbers, and to organizations and to overseas destinations,” wrote Debbie Coffey, vice president of the Wild Horse Freedom Federation. “We will need to access to these records in order to ensure that wild horses and burros are not being adopted or sold and ending up in the slaughter pipeline.”

The proposed document purge includes records about endangered species, oil and gas leases, timber sales, dams and land purchases.

The National Archives has said that getting rid of records is standard and has been going on for decades. The schedule’s language gives broad authority to Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke to destroy records documenting government efforts to protect endangered species and public lands.

“The Trump administration wants to bury science and hide how mining, drilling and logging on public lands devastate our precious natural spaces,” said Meg Townsend, an attorney for the Center for Biological Diversity.

Trump Jr. Invested in a Hydroponic Lettuce Company Whose Chair Was Seeking Trump Administration Fund

The president’s eldest son last year became the most prominent shareholder in an indoor-lettuce farm while the company’s co-chairman, a friend of Donald Trump Jr.’s and presidential fundraiser, sought federal support for his other business interests.

by Jake Pearson and Peter Elkind Dec. 4, 4 a.m. EST

Donald Trump Jr., the president’s eldest son, took a stake last year in a startup whose co-chairman is a major Trump campaign fundraiser who has sought financial support from the federal government for his other business interests, according to records obtained by ProPublica.

The fundraiser, Texas money manager Gentry Beach, and Trump Jr. attended college together, are godfather to one of each other’s sons and have collaborated on investments — and on the Trump presidential campaign. Since Trump’s election, Beach has attempted to obtain federal assistance for projects in Asia, the Caribbean and South America, and he has met or corresponded with top officials in the National Security Council, Interior Department and Overseas Private Investment Corporation.

Beach and others at the startup, Eden Green Technology, have touted their connections to the first family to impress partners, suppliers and others, according to five current and former business associates. Richard Venn, an early backer of Eden Green, recalls the company’s founder mentioning “interest from the Trump family.” Another associate said Beach bragged about his ties to the Trumps in a business meeting.

The investment is one of just a handful of known business ventures pursued by Trump Jr. since his father moved into the White House almost two years ago. In addition to being a top campaign surrogate and public booster, Trump Jr. serves as an executive vice president of his father’s company and one of just two trustees of the trust holding the president’s assets.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) announced Monday that it had filed a lawsuit in conjunction with the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) against a Florida sheriff's office for unlawfully detaining and nearly deporting a U.S citizen.

Peter Sean Brown was born in Philadelphia and has lived in Florida for the last 10 years. According to the complaint, Brown reported to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office in April for violating his probation for a low-level marijuana offense and was subsequently detained longer than was required at the request of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

ICE believed Brown was a Jamaican undocumented immigrant of the same name, and was intent on deporting him. Despite his repeated pleas that he was a U.S. citizen with a birth certificate and a Florida driver's license, Monroe County jail officers told him he was being sent to a country he had only been to once on a cruise.

"I am and have always been a citizen of the United States," Brown said in a video released by the ACLU. "I did not even realize what ICE was at the time and reading through it I realized it had something to do with immigration, and at that point, I made a comment of, 'There must've been a mistake.'"

Founder of dating site for Trump fans only threatens to sue any liberals who attempt to join

Righter, a new dating website for Trump supporters who feel they’ve been regularly rejected by prospective mates for their political views, is now threatening to sue any Trump critics who try to join.

In an interview with the Daily Beast, Righter founder Christy Edwards Lawton said her website, which will officially launch later this month, will have “zero tolerance” for any liberals who sign up.

“I have a very nice legal team that will be handling that,” Lawton explained.

Although Lawton admitted it might be difficult to track down every heretic who doesn’t possess the prerequisite devotion to President Donald Trump, she said that people just looking to troll lonely Trump fans would be easy to spot.

Lawton also tells the Daily Beast that she was inspired to create Righter after purportedly meeting a “stunning” female Trump supporter at a party in New York who couldn’t get a date with any man because of her politics.

California lawmaker tees up new governor to require colleges to offer abortion pill

Governor-elect Gavin Newsom supported the idea vetoed by his predecessor.

California state Sen. Connie Leyva (D) on Monday re-introduced a bill to require public universities to offer the abortion pill on campus. Gov. Jerry Brown (D) vetoed the measure in September, and advocates hope that a new governor will mean it will be successful this time around.

Should the California legislature pass “College Student Right to Access Act” and Gov.-elect Gavin Newsom (D) sign the measure into law, health centers at the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) campuses will offer students medication abortion starting in 2023. Medication abortion safely terminates pregnancies up to 10 weeks when two pills, mifepristone and misoprostol, are taken together 24-hours apart.

“Regardless of where they may live, all Californians should have access to the full range and choices of reproductive care services so that they can plan their futures and accomplish their goals,” said Leyva in a statement. “I am confident that the incoming Legislature will also approve SB 24 and that Governor-Elect Gavin Newsom will continue to stand strong in his support for a woman’s right to choose.”

The unprecedented legislation was dreamed up by a group of students who wanted the University of California, Berkeley to provide comprehensive health services. But Brown deemed the measure uncalled for.

From the field to the rink: How one hockey pro is bringing politics to the ice

After serving as a field organizer for a congressional campaign, Miye D’Oench hopes to challenge hockey's "privileged" culture.

NEWARK, NEW JERSEY — Hockey pro Miye D’Oench tallied two assists last Sunday as the Metropolitan Riveters secured their second win of the 2018-2019 season. Only weeks before, the third-year forward was skating on asphalt in Kentucky instead of ice in New Jersey.

“It definitely takes a minute to adjust to the pace again, but I feel good,” D’Oench told ThinkProgress after the 4-3 shootout win over the Connecticut Whale.

She hadn’t hit the ice in a game for the Riveters since hoisting the Isobel Championship Cup exactly eight months prior to her season debut last week. At a time when athletes are constantly told to “stick to sports,” 24-year-old D’Oench decided to step away from hockey and spend the past four months working on a political campaign in Kentucky.

“I’ve always been interested in politics,” she told ThinkProgress after practice in Newark last month. “I don’t think I want to run [for office], but [I like] staying engaged and trying to be a well-informed citizen.”
