President Donald Trump on Thursday quietly issued a memo granting Defense Secretary Mark Esper the power to abolish collective bargaining rights for the Defense Department’s 750,000 civilian workers, a move unions decried as part of the administration’s far-reaching assault on organized labor.
The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) condemned the memo, which was published in the Federal Register (pdf) Thursday, as “a travesty and a disgrace.”

The memo argues that a unionized Defense Department workforce could pose a threat to “national security” and that, if necessary, collective bargaining rights at the department should be scrapped in the interest of “protecting the American people.”

Her demolition of Bloomberg in the Nevada debates was just a warm up.

Elizabeth Warren was prematurely relegated to the second tier in part because a lot of commentators and ordinary voters doubted whether she could stand up to Donald Trump. Warren has lagged behind other Democratic candidates in head to head-to-head general election match-up polls.
For instance, The Washington Post/ABC News poll released just before the Nevada debate showed Biden defeating Trump by seven points, Sanders by six, Bloomberg by five, and Warren winning by just one. And when asked in that poll “which candidate has the best chance in the general election,” Warren earned just 3 percent of the vote, behind everyone except Tom Steyer.
But that was then. Warren demonstrated last night that she is not just deft and tough at swatting away other Democratic rivals. She is at her absolute best in taking on and taking down male corporate bullies.

A new Washington Post report goes deep on the ways that Facebook has given in to Republican demands out of fear of angering conservatives and Trumpists. Media Matters has repeatedly written about this topic, and this appeasement is one reason that Mark Zuckerberg was named 2017 Misinformer of the Year.
Here are some notable takeaways from Craig Timberg’s thorough reporting:
Facebook executive Joel Kaplan, a former official in the George W. Bush White House, personally defended keeping up a network of fake news sites, saying, “We can’t remove all of it because it will disproportionately affect conservatives,” and that prominent right-wing figures did not believe that the content they pushed was fake news.
Facebook may be making advertising decisions out of fear of angering Republicans. The company has continued to allow narrow targeting of political advertising to individuals by “their home address, gender, education level, income, marital status, job or other characteristics” even as Democrats warned that such targeting undermined transparency and eased the spread of disinformation. Google has limited targeting, and Twitter has banned political ads. The report quotes former Facebook executive Alex Stamos: “I think Facebook is looking at their political advertising policies in explicitly partisan terms, and they’re afraid of angering Republicans.”

President Donald Trump on Thursday attacked the jury foreman in the trial of his ally Roger Stone by accusing her of having an anti-Trump bias.
“The woman who was in charge of the jury is totally tainted!” Trump fumed. “When you take a look, how can you have a person like this? She was a anti-Trump activist.”
Seth Cousins, a juror at the Stone trial, went on CNN Friday to set the record straight about how he and his fellow jurors reached their decision to convict the longtime Trump ally of all seven charges, including perjury, witness tampering, and obstruction of justice.
“Honestly, it’s appalling to me,” Cousins said of Trump’s behavior. “8 million Americans are called and report to jury service every year — that’s 40,000 people every court day! 40,000 people today are showing up for jury duty. And for the president to issue these baseless attacks on our jury and on our foreperson really denigrates the service that each of these people is doing.”

MSNBC anchor Lawrence O’Donnell on Thursday joked about Donald Trump and his running mate, Vladimir Putin, after the bombshell report that Russia was actively intervening in the 2020 presidential election in an effort to reelect the president.
The host returned from a commercial break to share an image “Janet and Martin Sheen texted me.”
The image was of a bumper sticker a friend of the Sheen’s had made with the Trump/Putin 2020 theme.
“That’s straight from Malibu,” O’Donnell said.
“Thank you Martin, thanks for watching,” he added.
