Pompeo condemns China for banning reporters weeks after he did the same

By Emily Singer -February 19, 2020 2:19 PM

The Trump administration has repeatedly attacked the U.S. media as 'fake news.'

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday condemned China for expelling three Wall Street Journal reporters from the country, saying China should respect free speech.

According to a spokesperson for China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the reporters' credentials were revoked this week over an editorial headline the government did not like. The Journal said the reporters had been ordered to leave the country within five days.

On Wednesday, Pompeo spoke out against the decision.

"The United States condemns China’s expulsion of three Wall Street Journal foreign correspondents," he said in a statement. "Mature, responsible countries understand that a free press reports facts and expresses opinions. The correct response is to present counter arguments, not restrict speech. The United States hopes that the Chinese people will enjoy the same access to accurate information and freedom of speech that Americans enjoy."

Voters in Kentucky break record for registration ahead of 2020 election

By Dan Desai Martin -February 19, 2020 3:15 PM

A record number of Kentuckians are registered to vote, just in time for Sen. Mitch McConnell's reelection race.

A record number of Kentucky residents are registered to vote as of Jan. 31, Secretary of State Michael Adams (R) announced on Tuesday.

More than 3.4 million Kentuckians are now registered, marking a new high for the state.

In his statement, Adams encouraged "every eligible person who is not registered to vote to do so by April 20, the last day to register to vote in the May 19 primary."

According to the Kentucky Secretary of State's Office, 48% of Kentucky voters are registered as Democrats, 43% are Republicans, and 9% are "listed under other affiliations."

Adams said Kentucky had "relatively high voter turnout in 2019" and he hopes "Kentuckians will show up strong at the polls" this year to select both a president and senator as well as state officials.

NBC News/Wall Street Journal Erase Elizabeth Warren In Their New National Poll

Elizabeth Warren is in third place in the polls but that didn't stop NBC News/WSJ from failing to poll her in a head-to-head matchup against Trump.

By Kerry Eleveld

You can’t make this stuff up: A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll chose five Democratic candidates to test against Donald Trump in a new national poll. Elizabeth Warren, who is tied for third in the poll, wasn’t one of them. Instead, the outlets opted to test two candidates running below her—Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar. Here’s the national rankings (compared to candidates’ movement since their January poll).

Sanders 27% (-)
Biden 15% (-11)
Warren 14% (-1)
Bloomberg 14% (+5)
Buttigieg 13% (+6)
Klobuchar 7% (+2)

Check out how **every one of them (**except Warren) stacks up against Trump. #WheresWarren

And I am calling for everyone to flood NBC News with complaints. They ought to withdraw the entire poll.

GOP leader claims Trump prefers hanging out with workers over the wealthy

By Josh Israel -February 18, 2020 11:48 AM

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy absurdly suggested that Donald Trump mostly avoids rich people.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy claimed on Monday that Donald Trump much prefers to hang out with blue-collar workers over wealthy people.

In a Fox News segment on the "elitist left," McCarthy (R-CA) attempted to present Trump as someone who would rather interact with ordinary people than rich elites.

"If you ever go on a project with him, where he's building a building, he is more in contact with those who are building it than who's buying it. That's the uniqueness about him," he said. "He'd rather hang out with everyone who builds the building than whoever buys the room from him."

Just days before, Trump had held a $580,600-per-couple campaign fundraising event with some of his richest friends.

Bloomberg Qualifies For Debate, Faces Attacks On Stop-And-Frisk Policy And Sexist Comments

By Cristina Cabrera

February 18, 2020 10:41 a.m.

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has qualified to appear on the 2020 primary debate stage on Wednesday night after having reached the Democratic National Committee’s required polling threshold.

“Mike is looking forward to joining the other Democratic candidates on stage and making the case for why he’s the best candidate to defeat Donald Trump and unite the country,” Kevin Sheekey, Bloomberg’s campaign manager, said in an emailed statement to TPM.

The DNC eliminated its donor requirement in early February for the debates, to the anger of Bloomberg’s rivals, who accused the DNC of greasing the wheels for the billionaire’s self-funded campaign.

The other candidates have signaled that they’re ready to pounce on the former mayor’s racially biased stop-and-frisk policy that primarily targeted young black and Latino men in New York City, which Bloomberg defended in a leaked 2015 audio tape while claiming minority neighborhoods are “where all the crime is.”

I have a warm fuzzy feeling that Elizabeth Warren is going to take this "guy" to the woodshed when it comes to her plans on who should pay taxes and why............................and why 2% and why those making over 100 million should pay, this is a really, really big deal..........................

Bolton: I 'Really Hope' My Book Isn't 'Suppressed' By Trump

By Cristina Cabrera
|
February 18, 2020 8:30 a.m.

Former National Security Adviser John Bolton said on Monday night that he was concerned that President Donald Trump and the White House would try to muzzle his tell-all book, “The Room Where It Happened: A White House Memoir.”

“I hope, ultimately, I can get the book published,” Bolton told the audience at an event at Duke University, his first public appearance since the beginning of the impeachment proceedings against Trump. “I hope it’s not suppressed.”

The former adviser slammed the White House’s “censorship” of his book with its lengthy pre-publication review of the manuscript for “classified information.”

Bolton, who had refused to testify in the House’s impeachment investigation, refused to divulge any information regarding Trump’s Ukraine pressure campaign, coyly suggesting that people ought to read his upcoming book (scheduled to be released on March 17) instead.

'What the hell are we doing?' Book reveals Deutsche Bank lawyer appalled that they

they kept Trump as a client

Published 4 hours ago on February 18, 2020

By Brad Reed

A new book written by New York Times reporter David Enrich reveals that Deutsche Bank’s own general counsel was appalled that the bank kept Trump as a client, as he kept defaulting on debts even after all other banks had cut him off from funding.

A review of the book published in the Times reveals that Deutsche Bank was so desperate to have Trump as a high-profile American client that its private banking division kept lending him money even after its real estate division cut him off for failing to repay his loans.

“Deutsche’s brass was so in thrall to Trump’s celebrity, and so eager to expand in America, one division lent $48 million to cancel the debt on a Chicago skyscraper — a debt Trump had defaulted on with another wing of the same bank,” the review explains. “They bought his pitch as voters would. In what could serve as a requiem for the country’s lost innocence, the general counsel said, ‘What the hell are we doing lending money to a guy like this?'”

Much of the book does not deal specifically with Trump, however, and instead details an assortment of scandals that Deutsche Bank has been involved in, including “interest rate manipulation, Russian money laundering, currency dealings with rogue states, the collapse of Italy’s (and the world’s) oldest bank, hidden derivative losses, a high-level suicide,” according to the review.

Trump attacks jury and demands new trial for convicted felon Roger Stone

By Emily Singer -February 18, 2020 10:07 AM

Trump is trying to push the judge to grant Stone a new trial just days before Stone is set to be sentenced.

Donald Trump is once again meddling in the criminal proceedings against his longtime political ally and former campaign adviser Roger Stone, this time demanding that the judge in Stone's case grant him a new trial.

Trump made the demand on Twitter by quoting Fox News personality Andrew Napolitano, who said on "Fox & Friends" Tuesday morning that a juror on Stone's case was allegedly biased against Trump.

Trump tweeted:

So now he wants to intimidate a judge..............................I really hope that she tells him and Stone to go pound sand......................

GOP senators hold hearing on abortion to attack doctors and peddle lies

By Lisa Needham -February 18, 2020 10:40 AM

Republicans are relying on long-debunked claims to stir anti-abortion sentiment and cut women off from health care.

Last week, the Senate Judiciary Committee heard testimony on the latest bill designed to spread lies about later abortions. Sponsored by Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE), the "Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act" is a solution in search of a problem.

The hearing itself was a tangle of lies directed at people who find themselves in incredibly vulnerable situations when abortion becomes necessary late in pregnancy.

Sasse's bill would "prohibit a health care practitioner from failing to exercise the proper degree of care in the case of a child who survives an abortion or attempted abortion." If practitioners fail to exercise the "proper degree of care" — something the bill does not define at all — they could face a fine and up to five years of prison time.

From the very start of the hearing, Sasse approached the matter in a disingenuous way. He said that the hearing "is not actually about limiting access to abortion at all" and was merely about making sure an infant "born alive" during a "botched abortion" is given the same care "that would be provided to any other baby at the same gestational stage."

How convenient there party AG is trying his damnedest to take down the DOJ and the Constitution and these same enabling traitors that sat on there hands in a impeachment hearing are more concerned about infringing on a human being's right to privacy, tan the country to pander..........................got it.......................they are still traitors every fucking last one of these republican fascist................

McConnell gets $50,000 from pharma after blocking bill to lower drug prices

By Josh Israel -February 18, 2020 9:13 AM

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in September that he would not allow a vote on the Lower Drug Costs Now Act.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced in September that he would block any consideration of a bill to lower prescription drug costs. By the end of December, he had raked in more than $50,000 in contributions from political action committees and individuals tied to the pharmaceutical industry.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced on Sept. 19 that the Democratic majority would offer H.R. 3, the Lower Drug Costs Now Act. The bill would allow the federal government to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies on the cost of prescription drugs for Medicare, restrict price hikes, and limit out-of-pocket costs. It aims to follow through on one of Donald Trump's unkept campaign promises: Medicare drug price negotiation.

That same day Pelosi outlined the plan, McConnell (R-KY) declared it would have no chance of passage in the GOP-controlled Senate. "Socialist price controls will do a lot of left-wing damage to the healthcare system. And of course we're not going to be calling up a bill like that," he told reporters.

Though polling shows about 88% of Americans favor letting Medicare negotiate lower drug costs, the pharmaceutical industry is strongly against it. And within days of McConnell's announcement, his reelection campaign and his leadership PAC saw a large uptick in donations from the industry.
