Trump spent the week lying about taxes, trade, Bernie, and his own power

By Associated Press -February 24, 2020 9:30 AM

Donald Trump went deep and wide in distorting what he's done in office.

In an audacious league of his own, Donald Trump celebrated the elimination of a tax that still exists and went deep and wide in distorting what he's done in office.

A sampling from the past week:

Fact check: 4 of the biggest campaign promises broken by Trump

By Associated Press -February 24, 2020 10:15 AM

Trump's 'promises kept' mantra hasn't always matched reality.

"It's been three years of promises made and promises kept, but we're just getting started, (insert state here)."

That line from Vice President Mike Pence is a hallmark of how he introduces Donald Trump to campaign rally audiences. Last week, he delivered versions at rallies in Colorado Springs and Las Vegas.

That line from Vice President Mike Pence is a hallmark of how he introduces Donald Trump to campaign rally audiences. Last week, he delivered versions at rallies in Colorado Springs and Las Vegas.

But is it true? In some respects, yes. Trump has followed through on promises to cut regulations and renegotiate trade deals and to donate his salary, just to name a few.

But in many critical areas, promises made by the president have not been promises kept.

A look at some areas where rhetoric has not matched reality.

The Postal Service Fired Thousands of Workers for Getting Injured While Delivering and Processing

Your Mail

USPS forced out 44,000 workers who got injured on the job. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says the effort, part of a five year program, violated the law. But the Postal Service has fought its workers’ claims since 2007.

by Maryam Jameel Feb. 24, 5 a.m. EST

One night in 2009, Madelaine Sattlefield lifted an 80-pound tray of letters carefully sorted by Missouri ZIP code. She had done this task thousands of times in nine years, but on this night, her arm seared with pain and went limp by her side. The tray crashed and sent envelopes cascading around her. She could barely move but immediately worried about what an injury might mean for her job.

“Anxiety had kicked in. I was like, what are they going to say, what are they going to do?” Sattlefield said.

Within months, the U.S. Postal Service fired her, one of about 44,000 employees who were either fired or left their jobs under pressure over five years in a program that “targeted” employees with work-related injuries, according to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. A commission ruling on the class action complaint also found that the Postal Service discriminated against an additional 15,130 injured workers by changing their work duties or accommodations, and unlawfully disclosed the private medical information of injured workers across the country.

Now, more than a decade later, despite the ruling, the Postal Service is still fighting the class-action complaint. It has refused to settle, stating in its latest financial report that the case’s outcome could have a “material impact” on the agency. The EEOC plans to go case by case through about 28,000 claims, and the Postal Service is contesting each worker’s allegations, which could drag out the process for years. To dispute many of the claims, the Postal Service is arguing that the workers aren’t providing sufficient proof that they actually had disabilities or were harmed by the program.

“They never say die,” said Robbie Dix, head of the EEOC’s federal appellate program. In 48 years with the EEOC, the agency tasked with enforcing employment discrimination laws, Dix said he can’t recall another federal agency systematically targeting so many disabled workers. Their class action is among the largest the thinly staffed EEOC — which normally gets about 8,000 federal hearings requests each year — has handled.

Trump calls for probe into leak of intelligence on Russian election interference

POLITICS FEBRUARY 23, 2020 / 9:28 AM / UPDATED AN HOUR AGO

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump on Sunday called for an investigation into an apparent leak of classified intelligence from a briefing for lawmakers on Russian interference in the 2020 U.S. presidential campaign, setting his sights on a leading Democrat.

Speaking to reporters as he left the White House for a trip to India, Trump said he had not been briefed on intelligence that Russia was aiming to boost the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.

A congressional source told Reuters on Friday that intelligence officials have told lawmakers Russia appears to be engaging in disinformation and propaganda campaigns to help both Democratic challenger Bernie Sanders and Trump, who is seeking re-election.

Broad-based support powers Sanders to big win in Nevada Democratic vote

Sharon Bernstein, John Whitesides
6 MIN READ

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - Broad-based support across age, racial and ideological groups propelled Bernie Sanders to a dominant victory in Nevada’s Democratic caucuses, tightening his grip on the front-runner spot in the race to find a challenger to President Donald Trump.

Joe Biden, a former vice president, appeared headed to a badly needed second-place finish in Nevada after poor showings earlier this month in the first two nominating contests in the Democratic presidential race ahead of the Nov. 3 election.

Sanders’ triumph on Saturday in the first racially diverse state in the campaign suggested he was reaching a broader coalition of Democratic voters with his unapologetic message of social and economic justice, including his signature pledge to provide universal healthcare for all Americans.

For Biden and other moderates who argue Sanders is too liberal to beat Trump and who have been trying to blunt his momentum, however, the Nevada results made the job much harder.

Hungarians march to protest PM Orban's anti-Roma campaign

BUDAPEST (Reuters) - More than 2,000 Hungarians, including Roma families and civil groups, marched to parliament on Sunday to protest against the government’s refusal to pay compensation to Roma children who had been unlawfully segregated in a school in eastern Hungary.

Nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who has come under fire from the European Union for his perceived erosion of the rule of law, suggested the state should disobey court orders to pay compensation to Roma children in the village of Gyongyospata and provide training instead.

Lower courts have ordered the state to pay damages in a lawsuit that has been dragging on for almost a decade. Hungary’s top court is due to make a final ruling soon.

With the economy slowing, and his anti-immigration campaign losing steam, analysts say Orban is seeking to mobilize his voters by targeting independent courts, the Roma minority, and the NGOs who help them.

“The meddling of the government in the Gyongyospata restitution issue is unlawful and violates the rule of law and the independence of the courts,” protest organizers said on Facebook.

Russia-linked disinformation campaign spreading unfounded conspiracy theories about COVID-19: report

Published 1 hour ago on February 22, 2020

By Agence France-Presse

Thousands of Russian-linked social media accounts have launched a coordinated effort to spread alarm about the new coronavirus, disrupting global efforts to fight the epidemic, US officials say.

The disinformation campaign promotes unfounded conspiracy theories that the United States is behind the COVID-19 outbreak, in an apparent bid to damage the US image around the world by seizing on health concerns.

State Department officials tasked with combating Russian disinformation told AFP that false personas are being used on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to advance Russian talking points in multiple languages.

“Russia’s intent is to sow discord and undermine US institutions and alliances from within, including through covert and coercive malign influence campaigns,” said Philip Reeker, the acting Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia.

“By spreading disinformation about coronavirus, Russian malign actors are once again choosing to threaten public safety by distracting from the global health response,” he said.

Fatal crash of flat-earther's steam-powered rocket caught on video: report

Published 1 min ago on February 22, 2020

By Bob Brigham

An effort to prove the earth flat reportedly failed on Saturday.

“A man died in what authorities described as a rocket crash in the desert in Barstow on Saturday afternoon,” KTLA-TV reported Saturday.

“Authorities did not identity the pilot pending positive identification by coroner’s officials. Witnesses and news reports indicted the launch was an event hosted by local daredevil ”Mad Mike Hughes, an amateur rocket builder intent on proving that the Earth is flat,” KTLA reported.

Shocking video from the event showed a rocket launch, with a parachute deployed shortly after launch. The rocket appeared to crash in the desert, launching a plume of dust.

How the Supreme Court Contributed to Growing Inequality

Two new histories show how the egalitarian advances under Earl Warren were reversed.

BY MARK JOSEPH STERN JANUARY 29, 2020

President Donald Trump appears eager to accelerate the cycle of inequality. His judicial nominees are, if anything, more reactionary than Nixon’s, hungry to tighten the richest Americans’ stranglehold on democracy while permitting the oppression of women, minorities, and poor people.

Democracy and Equality: The Enduring Constitutional Vision of the Warren Court

By Geoffrey R. Stone and David A. Strauss

Oxford University Press

From 1953 to 1969, the Supreme Court undertook a sustained assault on America’s racial apartheid, dismantling Jim Crow and transforming the federal judiciary into a bulwark of individual liberty. Then Richard Nixon assumed the presidency—and the Court’s crusade screeched to a halt. Chief Justice Earl Warren, who led the Court’s “rights revolution,” stepped down, followed by three more justices, allowing Nixon to reshape the Court into a body that not only tolerated oppression but actively thwarted democracy. The Supreme Court is best known for its expansion of personal freedom in cases like Brown v. Board of Education, Roe v. Wade, and Obergefell v. Hodges. But these highlights can obscure the Court’s role as a dangerously reactionary institution in the half-century since Warren retired.

As Adam Cohen shows in Supreme Inequality: The Supreme Court’s Fifty-Year Battle for a More Unjust America, the beginning of this retreat from Warren’s grand vision can be largely attributed to Nixon himself. In 1968, Nixon ran as a law-and-order candidate, criticizing the Warren Court’s criminal justice decisions, which dramatically expanded the rights of the accused. When he took office, Nixon wasn’t content to replace Warren, who announced his plans to retire before the election. He also wanted to take down Justice Abe Fortas, a liberal Lyndon B. Johnson appointee. Like most justices today, Fortas made money on the side: He taught a summer seminar at American University Law School and provided advice to a civil rights foundation, earning a handsome paycheck for both gigs. There was nothing remotely illegal about Fortas’s work, but Nixon instructed his attorney general, John Mitchell, to investigate Fortas anyway.
