BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Talks between British Prime Minister Theresa May’s top government lawyer and European Union negotiators to win concessions from the bloc on Brexit ended with no agreement in Brussels on Tuesday.

May has sent Attorney General Geoffrey Cox to seek changes to her deal in a last-ditch bid to get it through parliament and smooth Britain’s departure from the European Union.

The talks between Cox, Britain’s Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay and the EU’s Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier ended with no agreement after more than three hours on Tuesday. Sources from both sides said negotiations among lower-ranking officials would continue on Wednesday.

An EU official said Tuesday’s talks did not go well.

The North Carolina Board of Elections unanimously voted Monday to set the dates for the re-do congressional race in the ninth district, an election that was originally tainted by absentee ballot fraud.

The new primary will be held May 14 and the general election will follow on September 10. If a second primary is required, it will be held September 10 and the general on November 5.

Filing begins next week.

Two smaller races that were affected by the ballot fraud, those for Bladen county commissioner and soil and water conservation district supervisor, will be held May 14.

By Allegra Kirkland
March 4, 2019 12:07 pm

Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee on Monday announced a sprawling investigation into the Trump administration’s “threats against the rule of law,” requesting documents from some 81 individuals, corporations and entities associated with President Trump’s 2016 campaign, presidential transition and tenure in office.

The requests suggest committee Democrats are probing a wide range of topics, from Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election to the Trump Organization’s efforts to pay off women who claim to have had affairs with Trump.

Below is a complete list of the people congressional investigators want to hear from. House Judiciary Democrats have posted nearly all of the letters and document requests online; we’ve linked them below.

GM set to end production at Ohio plant Wednesday

(Reuters) - General Motors Co said on Monday it expects to end production of the Chevrolet Cruze at its Lordstown, Ohio assembly plant on Wednesday, the first of five plants it is idling this year in North America.

A GM spokesman said the company is “ahead of the production schedule” and added that production had been scheduled to end Friday “but now it looks like it will finish up Cruze production on Wednesday.”

Last week, the United Auto Workers union sued GM over its decision to end production and eliminate thousands of jobs U.S. auto plants, saying it violated a 2015 collective bargaining agreement.

The UAW has asked a federal judge to order GM to rescind its November decision to close three plants in Michigan, Ohio and Maryland, and award damages to employees for losses from what the UAW calls GM’s breach of contract.

On March 15, the Climate Kids Are Coming

A massive, international, youth-led mobilization will demand action on the climate crisis.
By Mark Hertsgaard

Beware the Ides of March, all you climate wreckers out there. The Climate Kids are coming, in massive and growing numbers, and they are not in the mood to negotiate. They know that you—whether you’re a fossil-fuel executive, a politician who takes fossil-fuel money, or a Fox News hack who recycles fossil-fuel lies—have put their future in grave danger, and they are rising up to take it back.

On March 15, tens of thousands of high-school and middle-school students in more than 30 countries plan to skip school to demand that politicians treat the global climate crisis as the emergency it is. Shakespeare made the Ides of March famous with his soothsayer’s warning in Julius Caesar, but ancient Romans actually saw it as a day for settling debts. What bigger debt is there than the theft of a livable future? At the March 15 School Strike 4 Climate, young people will call in that debt and, in the United States at least, demand real solutions in the form of the Green New Deal championed by Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

If you don’t know who Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg is yet, you can think of her as Ocasio-Cortez’s international climate-change counterpart. Like the rock-star progressive representative from New York, Thunberg is a charismatic young woman whose social-media savvy, moral clarity, and undaunted truth-telling have inspired throngs of admirers to take to the streets for a better world and call out the politicians, propagandists, and CEOs who are standing in the way.

Just as the 29-year-old Ocasio-Cortez torched the right-wing trolls who laughably derided her as “stupid” after she introduced, with Senator Ed Markey, the congressional resolution to create a Green New Deal, so Thunberg, 16, has gained prominence partly from her blistering callouts of global elites. After riding the train for 32 hours to Davos, Switzerland, in January—for the World Economic Forum’s annual gathering to which many billionaires and heads of state arrive in private jets—Thunberg told a panel (which included Gary Cohn, President Trump’s former chief economic adviser) that “some people, some companies, some decision-makers in particular have known exactly what priceless values they have been sacrificing to continue making unimaginable amounts of money.” A pause, and then a final thrust of the knife: “I think many of you here today belong to that group of people.”

More Japanese companies could leave UK over Brexit: ambassador

March 4, 2019 / 8:53 AM / Updated 16 minutes ago

LONDON (Reuters) - More Japanese companies could relocate away from Britain in the coming months if the uncertainty around Brexit does not lift, the country’s ambassador to Britain has told Sky News.

Koji Tsuruoka said many of Japan’s 1,000 or so UK-based companies were now considering how to adapt to life after Brexit, but they needed to know how Britain will trade with the European Union in the future in order to make decisions.

“Most of these companies would like to expand their capacity. But they need to know about the UK-EU economic relationship,” he said.

“These are all global companies and therefore they have other possibilities other than staying.

Brexit bribe? PM May unveils 1.6 billion fund for Brexit-backing towns

March 3, 2019 / 5:37 PM / Updated 44 minutes ago

LONDON (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Theresa May will on Monday set out plans for a 1.6 billion pound fund to help to boost economic growth in Brexit-supporting communities with ministers denying it was a bribe to win support for her EU exit deal.

The “Stronger Towns Fund”, details of which appeared in newspapers last month, is seen by many as part of May’s efforts to win support for her Brexit deal from opposition Labour lawmakers who represent areas, particularly in northern England that voted strongly in favour of leaving the European Union.

Britain is due to leave the bloc at the end of the month and May, whose exit deal with Brussels was rejected by a large majority of lawmakers in January, has promised parliament will get to vote on a revised deal by March 12.

The government said the fund would be targeted at places that had not shared fairly in the country’s prosperity and would be used to create new jobs, help to train people and boost economic activity.

I know this article is about a day late........................but................it really says everything about this "clusterfuck" Breixt BS.......................

Hey May, can I call you May, if companies are getting ready to leave Britain and the United Kingdom, and you have no revenue coming into the country, and people are being laid off because your an idiot with this Tory backed racist, fascist BREXIT deal, how are you going to come up with 1.6 billion pounds to help cities, cut social programs.......................

Here are the Americans speaking at a hate group friendly with sanctioned Russian oligarchs

Clarence Thomas's former clerk and a megachurch pastor leading Bible study groups in Washington decide to join the World Congress of Families.

The World Congress of Families (WCF), a notorious anti-LGBTQ group that’s reportedly received funding from sanctioned Russian oligarchs, is hosting its annual conference in Verona, Italy next month. And a number of Americans have decided to join them.

Among the Americans slated to speak at the WCF conference are John Eastman, former clerk for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and now a professor at Chapman University, and megachurch pastor Jim Garlow. According to the WCF’s roster, they will also be joined by Mike Donnelly, a higher-up at the right-wing Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA), and Sean O’Hare, the chairman of one of the most prominent anti-abortion groups aimed at American youth.

Donnelly confirmed to ThinkProgress that he would be speaking at the WCF conference next month. O’Hare, Garlow, Eastman, and Chapman University did not respond to ThinkProgress’ request for comment.

There’s nothing illegal about these Americans attending the upcoming conference, which will be hosted at the end of March. But WCF is currently the most prominent group linking the American religious right and sanctioned Russian oligarchs, and just a few months ago, the group hosted a Russian official sanctioned by both the Trump and Obama administrations.

At last year’s WCF conference in Moldova, which ThinkProgress attended, Brown pledged that the WCF would continue to act as a bridge between Washington and the Kremlin.

“In the United States right now we have an investigation into the president over connections with Russia — and some want to use this to try and divide us,” Brown said. “Well, I wanted to tell everyone here that we know [that] what we’re doing leads to peace. We know that what we’re doing — in creating friendships of trust — is in the best interest of the family. And we know what we’re doing — there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it. The attempts to muddy the water are simply attempts to stop us from creating a more powerful, more global, unity around the family…

“The depths of our friendships will make it through.”

US puts end to dispute with EU over diplomatic protocol

Source: Associated Press

By RAF CASERT 38 minutes ago

BRUSSELS (AP) — The United States on Monday put an end to a dispute with the European Union over diplomatic protocol and lauded the 28-nation bloc as “one of America’s most valuable partners.”

U.S. Ambassador Gordon Sondland announced that “effective immediately” a recent diplomatic demotion of the EU ambassador in the largely ceremonial diplomatic Order of Precedence would be ended.

The perceived snub caused friction in early January and was seen as underscoring deteriorating trans-Atlantic relations.

EU Commission spokeswoman Maja Kocijancic said the bloc “was in touch with the U.S. administration to clarify this matter and we are therefore pleased that the United States took the decision to revert to the usual.”

German Carnival parades defy weather, poke fun at powerful

DUESSELDORF, Germany (AP) — Germany’s main Carnival parades got underway Monday in the face of some windy weather, with floats poking fun at U.S. President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Theresa May.

Organizers trimmed some frills from the annual parades because of the weather front across western Germany. Parades in the traditional Carnival strongholds of Mainz, Cologne and Duesseldorf cut horses from Monday’s events. Cologne also decided to do without flags and signs, while the parades in Duesseldorf and Muenster were delayed for around two hours.

Some smaller parades, such as those in Bottrop and Fulda, were canceled altogether.

Revelers weren’t letting the poor weather dampen the traditional Carnival irreverence.
