Can they save us? Meet the climate kids fighting to fix the planet

Some are calling climate change this generation’s civil rights movement. These are the young activists leading the charge

by Adrian Horton, Dream McClinton and Lauren Aratani

Despite being barely two years old, the Sunrise Movement has outpaced established environmental groups in the push to radically reshape the political landscape around climate change.

Closely allied with new congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the youth-led Sunrise Movement has helped set out a sweepingly ambitious plan to address climate change in the form of the Green New Deal. Activists have ramped up pressure on lawmakers to back the plan, staging a high-profile occupation of the office of Nancy Pelosi, the House speaker, and, more recently, picketing Mitch McConnell, the Republican Senate leader.

The movement comprises a small core team of young organizers, supported by a larger group of several hundred volunteers. The group’s elevation of the Green New Deal has clearly riled Trump, who has falsely but repeatedly claimed that the plan would result in the banning of cars, air travel and even cows.

The Guardian spoke to Sunrise members on how the organization has shaken the political and environmental establishment in the US.

An Essex police spokesman confirmed that a 49-year-old man had died. “We were called to concerns for the welfare of a man at an address in Brook Hill, North End, just after 8.10am on Monday,” he said.

Most US coal plants are contaminating groundwater with toxins, analysis finds

Of 265 US power plants that monitor groundwater, 242 report unsafe levels of at least one pollutant derived from coal ash

Almost every coal-fired power plant in the US is contaminating groundwater with unsafe levels of toxic pollution, according to the first comprehensive analysis of the consequences of coal ash waste disposal.

Of the 265 US power plants that monitor groundwater, 242 have reported unsafe levels of at least one pollutant derived from coal ash, which is the remnants of coal after it is burned for energy. More than half such facilities report unsafe levels of arsenic, a carcinogen linked to multiple types of cancer, with 60% finding elevated lithium, which is associated with neurological damage.

In all, nine out of every 10 coal plants with reportable data have tainted nearby groundwater with at least one coal ash pollutant, with a majority having unsafe levels of at least four different toxins.

As Brexit looms, UK 'preppers' stock up and hunker down

By JILL LAWLESS today

LONDON (AP) — For almost as long as Britain and the European Union have been wrangling over Brexit, Melvin Burton has been preparing for a bumpy landing.

He’s growing vegetables, drying fruit and buying in bulk. He reels off the cornucopia of cans filling his shed and the cupboard under his stairs: “Tomato sauce, chopped tomatoes, corned beef, tuna, honey, baked beans, tins of ham. Cat food, of course, because I don’t want them to go hungry.”

“I started buying stuff about a year and a half ago,” said the 45-year-old, who lives with his wife and 8-year-old son in a village near Cambridge in eastern England. “No one seemed to be accepting that there was a real problem.”

Plenty of people think there is a problem now.

Turkey says in Patriot missile talks with U.S.

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey and the United States are in talks over Washington’s offer to sell a Patriot missile defense system to Ankara, Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Friday.

“The United States said they could sell Patriots, and the delegations are negotiating”, Cavusoglu was quoted as saying by news agency Anadolu.

Cavusoglu’s comments came after Bloomberg reported that Turkey had rejected a U.S. proposal to deliver a Patriot missile system by the end of the year.

During negotiations, the United States said it could deliver one system earlier, following Turkish objections to the delivery times, Cavusoglu said according to Anadolu. He added the possibility of joint production or a transfer of technology were also important for Ankara.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (Reuters) - Elon Musk’s SpaceX was due to launch an unmanned crew capsule atop a Falcon 9 rocket early on Saturday bound for the International Space Station, a major step toward NASA’s goal of reviving the U.S. human spaceflight program this year.

SpaceX’s 16-foot-tall (4.88-meter-) Crew Dragon capsule atop a Falcon 9 rocket was set for lift off from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center at 2:49 a.m. (1049 GMT) local time.

The station’s three-member crew is expected to greet the capsule, carrying 400 pounds of supplies and test equipment, early Sunday morning, NASA said. During its five-day stay, U.S. astronaut Anne McClain and Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques will run tests and inspect Crew Dragon’s cabin.

NASA has awarded SpaceX and Boeing Co $6.8 billion to build competing rocket and capsule systems to launch astronauts into orbit from American soil for the first time since the U.S. Space Shuttle was retired from service in 2011.

Republicans who held 33 hearings on Benghazi complain that Cohen's testimony was a waste of time

Republicans spent much of Wednesday's Oversight Committee hearing wishing they were talking about something more useful -- like Her Emails?

House Republicans spent the past few years — when they were the majority party — eschewing oversight of President Donald Trump and his administration, and instead holding hearings into such topics as social media and campus censorship of Trump supporters. Now that Democrats are in the majority and holding hearings that describe the potential legal jeopardy facing the president, House Republicans are suddenly very upset about wasting time.

The GOP members of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform spent much of Wednesday’s hearing with former Trump attorney and fixer Michael Cohen (who also served as the Republican National Committee Deputy Finance Chair) making it clear that they did not want to be there. “This isn’t the reason the people of West Virginia sent me to Congress,” complained Republican Rep. Carol Miller (R-WV), who ran her campaign on a pledge to support President Trump.

Miller said that she was “appalled” that the committee was listening to sworn testimony about alleged felonies committed by a sitting president, when it “could be focused on actual issues that are facing America like border security, neo-natal abstinence syndrome, or improving our nation’s crumbling infrastructure.” She said the committee should instead be holding hearings on child separation — a policy implemented by Trump’s own administration.

Even the Republicans’ oversight committee Twitter account repeated the claim:

"Rep. Carol Miller (R-WV), who ran her campaign on a pledge to support President Trump."

So Miller, you are now a full fledged enabler of aiding and abetting someone that has committed a felony, by providing cover during hearings into your hero's malfeasance, how do explain this to your kids on what is wrong with this picture to what you and everyone in your corrupt party think is right.....................absolutely amazing....................

Did you by chance see ( Rachel Maddow Show---2/28/2019) about a piece of property that your hero inflated for a bank loan in Bedford, NY, to the tune of get ready..........$291,000,000 million dollars and then in his financial disclosure forms he has it listed at 21-50 million, do you think that if someone defrauded the state of New York out of 400 million in tax, by committing a crime on his state and federal tax returns, you think that is just fine and dandy also...................so do you support bank fraud and insurance fraud, that your hero committed...........................keep on whining.......................
