Gov. Andrew Cuomo ripped the U.S. Senate’s $2 trillion federal stimulus plan on Wednesday as inadequate for New York, the country’s epicenter of the COVID-19 crisis, while he renewed calls for the 15,000 ventilators the state will need in the next few weeks for the mounting victims of the virus.
“It would really be terrible,” Cuomo said in a news conference, adding that the state government would get $3.8 billion and New York City would get only $1.3 billion, despite having more people with coronavirus than anywhere else in the U.S. As of Wednesday morning,15,597 people had tested positive for the coronavirus in New York City, seven times the number of cases in all of California, and 192 have died.
Though “$3.8 billion sounds like a lot of money,” New York is looking at a budget shortfall between $8 billion and $15 billion, he said. The virus has already cost the state roughly $1 billion and could wind up costing several billion dollars by the end of the crisis, he added.
The Senate planned to vote Wednesday on the $2 trillion stimulus package, the biggest relief in American history, finalized in the wee hours of Tuesday night between senators and the White House. It was still hitting snags ahead of the vote as critics, like Cuomo, demanded changes. The House has not said when it would vote on the bill, which would then go to President Trump to sign.

COVID-19 among troops jumped almost 60 percent this week, as their rate surpasses the U.S. at large

There are 227 cases of coronavirus among active duty service members, according to Defense Department data as of Wednesday morning, up from 133 on Monday. The number of recoveries has also risen, the data shows, with 19 troops returned to duty total, 15, since Monday.
That figure puts service member cases at about 175 per million troops. The rate is higher than the U.S. at large which according to the CDC is sitting at 135 per million as of Wednesday. And while no troops have died from COVID-19, the overall U.S. death rate is sitting slightly above 1 percent.
“You take prudent measures as best you can given the situation you’re in,” Defense Secretary Mark Esper told troops Tuesday in a virtual town hall live streamed from the Pentagon, when asked about social distancing to prevent the virus’ spread. “If you can avoid putting a large number of people in small rooms, you should do it.”
The higher infection rate among troops could possibly be explained by geography ― a soldier stationed in Korea was the first active duty service member diagnosed, followed soon by a sailor who had recently visited Italy.

Pennsylvania state Rep. Stephanie Borowicz was criticized after introducing a resolution calling for a day of humiliation, fasting, and prayer to solve the ongoing outbreak.
On Monday, Republican Pennsylvania state Rep. Stephanie Borowicz introduced a resolution in the state's General Assembly calling for "A State Day of Humiliation, Fasting, and Prayer" in response to the coronavirus crisis.
The resolution stated, "We know that, by His divine law, nations like individuals are subjected to punishments and chastisement in this world" and the current pandemic may be "punishment inflicted upon us for our presumptuous sins."
Borowicz's resolution goes on to claim that Pennsylvanians "have forgotten God" and thus need to "confess our national sins and to pray for clemency and forgiveness."

A timeline of Donald Trump's impeachment and his bungled response to the coronavirus pandemic make clear one had nothing to do with the other.
Republican leaders have concocted a new excuse to absolve Donald Trump of all responsibility for his administration's slow and bungled response to the coronavirus outbreak: Blame impeachment.
On Tuesday, Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) became the latest GOP leader to use the impeachment excuse.
Trump "did lose 'precious weeks' forced to defend himself against bogus impeachment charges," Cornyn wrote on Twitter, responding to criticism from Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), who accused Trump of failing to take the growing o seriously in the early months of 2020.
Last week, Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO) also blamed impeachment for a lax response, saying he wanted Congress to hold hearings on the topic but they would not because of impeachment.

Military suspends recovery of fallen troops from overseas battlefields amid coronavirus concerns

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic is even keeping already deceased American service members from traveling home.
Officials from the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency on Tuesday announced the ongoing worldwide virus outbreak has forced them to end all overseas missions to recover fallen military personnel early, and postponed any future recovery missions until at least June.
That includes planned efforts in 19 countries covering much of Europe and the Pacific. Personnel who had been called home from active missions in Kiribati, the Philippines, Poland, and Vietnam are in 14-day self-isolation and monitoring for signs of illness.
"COVID-19 dynamics have forced us to radically alter our operations, but keeping our team safe, here at home and abroad, is paramount," DPAA Director Kelly McKeague said in a statement. "At the same time, we are continuing to take actions with which our personnel can remain productive in their duties while maintaining the required distancing."

The Federalist, a right-wing publication that is one of President Donald Trump’s most reliable defenders, has published an editorial that advocates deliberately spreading the coronavirus in a “controlled” manner as part of a strategy to end the pandemic more quickly.
The editorial, written by an Oregon-based dermatologist named Douglas Perednia, argues that social distancing will do too much harm to America’s economy, and that more “outside the box” measures are required to curb the disease.
The solution, he writes, is controlled voluntary infection.
“CVI involves allowing people at low risk for severe complications to deliberately contract COVID-19 in a socially and medically responsible way so they become immune to the disease,” he writes. “People who are immune cannot pass on the disease to others.”

The coronavirus is hitting American Indians and Alaska Natives hard. Tribal citizens are dying, Indian nations have closed casinos to protect the public, and powwows and traditional gatherings have been canceled.
Among the crucial statistics that indicate how dire conditions are for American Indians and Alaska Natives: Indian Health Service hospitals have only 625 beds nationwide, with six intensive care unit beds and 10 ventilators to serve more than 2.5 million American Indians and Alaska Natives from 574 tribes.
Some tribes provide additional health services in their communities, but these programs only supply another 772 beds. That’s only 1,397 for 2.5 million people.
Governments at all levels have struggled to respond to the coronavirus pandemic as it spreads across the United States.

The Food and Drug Administration gave an experimental medicine called remdesivir to treat COVID-19 what's called orphan drug status on Monday.
To qualify for an orphan designation, drug companies must show that their product will treat a population of fewer than 200,000 patients or that it would be unprofitable.
With more than 52,000 confirmed U.S. cases of COVID-19 reported as of Tuesday afternoon, the illness is under the technical threshold for a rare disease. But cases are rising quickly and it seems inevitable that they will surpass 200,000.
The agency's decision would provide lucrative incentives to the drug's maker, Gilead Sciences, and could keep lower-priced generic versions of the medicine off the market for several years if remdesivir is approved for use, public health advocates say.
