Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-TX) was peppered with questions about how President Donald Trump has handled the COVID-19 pandemic.
At his Senate confirmation hearing for Director of National Intelligence, Ratcliffe was asked what he would do if Trump downplayed future threats as he had done with the coronavirus pandemic.
“Do you think President Trump has accurately portrayed the threat of COVID-19 to the American people?” Harris wondered.
“Are you saying presently?” Ratcliffe replied.

White House economic adviser struggles to explain his pandemic ‘model’ that shows zero deaths by May 15

White House economic Kevin Hassett on Tuesday struggled to explain a controversial chart that shows coronavirus deaths dropping nearly to zero by May 15.
Hassett’s so-called “cubic model” was panned by experts on Monday.
Hassett made an appearance on CNN on Tuesday to defend his “cubic model.”
“Why did you do it?” CNN’s Poppy Harlow asked. “Did anyone ask you to do this and why are you creating these?”
Hassett explained that he began creating his chart daily because of the ventilator shortage. According to the economic adviser, his chart is made to track the accuracy of other scientific models.

Frontier Airlines will let you pay to keep the middle seat empty on your flight

(CNN) — The middle seat on a plane is already an undesirable spot. Soon passengers on Frontier Airlines flights will be able to pay extra to keep the middle seat of their row empty.
The airline is to offer a "More Room" seating option to guarantee the middle seat stays unoccupied during flights. It allows passengers a modicum of social distance from other people in a situation where it's not possible to keep six feet apart.
Frontier's seating option will be offered on flights departing May 8 through August 31, with 18 "More Room" seats available on each flight, though there are anywhere from 26 to 41 rows on the carrier's aircraft. Tickets start at $39 per passenger.
Frontier joins a crop of other national airlines that offer similar accommodations: Delta Air Lines began blocking off middle seats in April, with no charge to passengers. American Airlines said it will leave 50% of middle seats in the main cabin empty and "will only use those seats when necessary."

A 5-year-old boy was pulled over in Utah on his way to California to try to buy a Lamborghini

(CNN)A 5-year-old boy with $3 in his pocket was pulled over by Utah police while driving his parent's car to California to buy a Lamborghini.
The boy left in the SUV after arguing with his mother, who said she would not buy the luxury car for him, Utah Highway Patrol said on Twitter.
A trooper spotted the vehicle weaving on Interstate 15 at 30 mph, the Utah Highway Patrol said.
Troopers told CNN affiliate KSL-TV they initially thought the boy was an impaired driver.
"How old are you? You're 5 years old?" Trooper Rick Morgan says in dash camera footage of the traffic stop. "Wow ... Where did you learn to drive a car?"

Early research indicates the coronavirus has mutated, similar to SARS

Researchers said they have identified a mutation in samples obtained from patients who have been tested for COVID-19 that may indicate the virus is weakening and that potentially mirror a similar genetic mutation that occurred during the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak in 2003 and 2004, according to an accepted manuscript of a study published in the Journal of Virology on May 1. The University of Arizona researchers examined 383 samples of people who had been tested for COVID-19 (five had tested positive) and used next-generation sequencing to identify mutations in those five genomes. "Similar deletions in SARS-CoV-2 genomes are emerging, notably in the ORF8 gene that may potentially reduce virus fitness," the researchers wrote. They also found that many of the first Arizona cases appear to come from Europe, and not Wuhan, China, where the virus was first identified.

Global pandemic causes tourism and travel to collapse
The numbers: The U.S. trade deficit widened by almost 12% in March as the coronavirus pandemic grounded international flights, froze the global tourism industry and caused massive disruptions in the exchange of goods such as new cars and iPhones.
Imports fell 6.2%, but U.S. exports tumbled an even deeper 9.6% to cause the trade gap to rise. It’s the biggest monthly decline in exports ever recorded.
The U.S. deficit rose to $44.4 billion in March from $39.8 billion in February, the government said Tuesday. Economists polled by MarketWatch had forecast a $44.2 billion shortfall.

Fact-checking Trump: No, US not testing 'more than every country in the world, combined'

In addition, on a more telling measure — the proportion of a country's population that gets tested — the U.S. was not only late getting started but is still way behind.
Donald Trump was displeased when the Republican and Democratic leaders of Congress joined in a statement declining to use coronavirus testing machines from the White House for lawmakers. The statement affirmed what U.S. officials already know but Trump won't admit — the U.S. is still short of the tests crucial to ending the pandemic.
Trump responded to their statement with a falsehood.
TRUMP: "Interesting? By Congress not wanting the special 5 minute testing apparatus, they are saying that they are not 'essential'. In any event, we have great testing capacity, and have performed 6.5 million tests, which is more than every country in the world, combined!" — tweet Monday.

Even the science advisory board of the Environmental Protection Agency, which includes several Trump appointees, is questioning the agency's approach.
Even with the coronavirus pandemic raging, the Trump administration is pushing forward its anti-science agenda. The attacks on science have become so blatant that even some of Donald Trump's own appointees are sounding the alarm.
The latest attempt comes from the Environmental Protection Agency, which is working to implement a new rule that would block the use of high-quality scientific research on air and water pollution in policy-making. The proposed rule would force EPA policymakers to give preference to studies for which researchers turn over every piece of underlying data. However, such raw data often includes medical records and other personally identifiable information protected by law that would prevent researchers from turning it over.
The rule is so flawed that the EPA's science advisory board, which includes several Trump appointees, is questioning the agency's approach.
"It is plausible that in some situations, the Proposed Rule will decrease efficiency and reduce scientific integrity," the board said in an April 24 letter to EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler.
