Dow futures fall nearly 300 points Sunday evening as U.S. states attempt coronavirus reopenings

Published: May 3, 2020 at 6:22 p.m. ET
By Mark DeCambre

U.S. stock-index futures fell sharply in thin trading Sunday evening as investors contended with state reopenings, with cooped-up citizens eager to to gather as spring has brought warmer weather conditions.

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average YMM20, -1.38% DJIA, -2.55% were off 288 points, or 1.2%, at 23,331, those for the S&P 500 index ESM20, -1.35% SPX, -2.80% declined 31.45 points, or 1%, at 2,790.25, while Nasdaq-100 futures NQM20, -1.21% retreated 88.25 points, or 1%, at 8,629.75. More than two dozen U.S. have begun to allow select businesses to open or announce plans to do in May, but local and federal officials are also facing climbing cases of novel cases of coronavirus, albeit, at a slower pace. The COVID-19 pandemic has killed nearly 250,000 people world-wide and infected 3.5 million, with 1.154 million in the U.S. alone, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

Meanwhile, investors may pay close attention to the airline industry after Warren Buffett, during an annual shareholder meeting on Saturday, said that his Berkshire Hathaway BRK.A, -2.74% BRK.B, -2.50% had sold all of its stake in major airlines, Delta Air Lines Inc. DAL, -6.90%, Southwest Airlines LUV, -6.46%, United Airlines-parent United Airlines Holdings Inc. UAL, -10.00% and American Airlines AAL, -11.40%.

On Friday, the Dow fell 622.03 points, or 2.6%, to end at 23,723.69, while the S&P 500 gave up 81.72 points, or 2.8%, to settle at 2,830.71. The Nasdaq Composite Index retreated 284.60 points, or 3.2%, closing at 8,604.95

At Lincoln Memorial, Trump to take public's pandemic queries

WASHINGTON (AP) — Anxious for an economic recovery, President Donald Trump prepared to field Americans’ questions about decisions by some states to allow nonessential businesses to reopen while other states are on virtual lockdown due to the coronavirus.

After more than a month of being cooped up at the White House, Trump returned from a weekend at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland and planned to participate in a “virtual” town hall, hosted Sunday night by Fox News Channel, from inside the Lincoln Memorial.

“Hopefully our Country will soon mend,” Trump tweeted. Federal guidelines that encouraged people to stay at home and practice social distancing expired late last week.

Debate continued over moves by governors to start reopening state economies that tanked after shopping malls, salons and other nonessential businesses were ordered closed in attempt to slow a virus that has killed more than 66,000 Americans, according to a tally of reported deaths by Johns Hopkins University.

Gil Schwartz, aka humorist Stanley Bing, has died at 68

Source: Associated Press

By LINDSEY BAHR

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Gil Schwartz, the longtime CBS communications executive who wrote humorous novels and columns under the pen name Stanley Bing, has died. He was 68.

CBS representatives said Sunday that Schwartz died Saturday at his home in Santa Monica, California. His death, they said, was unexpected, but due to natural causes.

Schwartz had a distinguished nearly 40-year career in corporate America with CBS, Viacom and Westinghouse Broadcasting. He retired in 2018 from his post as senior executive vice president and chief communications officer of CBS Corporation.

But unlike most of his peers, Schwartz had a once-secret and then public side career as a lauded humorist and writer of 13 books who satirized the business world he was part of. Under the pseudonym Stanley Bing, Schwartz wrote a column in Esquire for 13 years and then in Fortune. One, “Executive Summary: Stanley Bing,” from 1991, describes an unwelcome 40th birthday in the style of a corporate presentation.

NRA cutting staff and salaries amid coronavirus pandemic

By LISA MARIE PANE
today

The National Rifle Association has laid off dozens of employees, canceled its national convention and scuttled fundraising, membership and shooting events that normally would be key to rallying its base in an election year.

The coronavirus pandemic has upended the gun-rights organization during what should be heady times for the group, in the middle of presidential election and with gun owners riled up over what they see as an effort by authorities to trample on their Second Amendment rights.

The NRA, which boasts about 5 million members, in recent weeks laid off or furloughed dozens of employees, imposed a four-day workweek for some employees and cut salaries across the board, including for CEO Wayne LaPierre. The financial issues, combined with the cancellation of fundraisers and the national convention, which would have surely drawn a visit from President Donald Trump, have complicated its ability to influence the 2020 election.

In a memo to staff, LaPierre said 20% salary cuts were across the board while some senior staffers “voluntarily” reduced their wages even more. He said the staffing reductions and other changes were intended to be temporary.

As lockdowns ease, some countries report new infection peaks

By FRANCES D'EMILIO, PABLO GORONDI and DANICA KIRKA
an hour ago

ROME (AP) — While millions of people took advantage of easing coronavirus lockdowns to enjoy spring weather, some of the world’s most populous countries reported worrisome new peaks in infections Sunday, including India, which saw its biggest single-day jump yet.

Second in population only to China, India reported more than 2,600 new infections. In Russia, new cases exceeded 10,000 for the first time. The confirmed death toll in Britain climbed near that of Italy, the epicenter of Europe’s outbreak, even though the U.K. population is younger than Italy’s and Britain had more time to prepare before the pandemic hit.

The United States continues to see tens of thousands of new infections each day, with more than 1,400 new deaths reported Saturday.

Health experts warn that a second wave of infections could hit unless testing is expanded dramatically once the lockdowns are relaxed. But pressure to reopen keeps building after the weeks-long shutdown of businesses worldwide plunged the global economy into its deepest slump since the 1930s and wiped out millions of jobs.

Ex-Trump fan reveals on MSNBC how he was duped into voting for the president in 2016

Published 1 min ago on May 3, 2020
By Tom Boggioni

Appearing on MSNBC’s “AM JOY,” a former supporter of Donald Trump looked back on the 2016 election and explained how he came to vote for the president — laying a large part of the blame on Fox News personalities who pumped up the then-businessman’s accomplishments while avoiding his numerous failures.

Speaking with host Joy Reid, Army veteran David Weissman said he learned much more about the president after the election than he did prior to voting — but first he attempted to explain why rabid supporters of the president have taken to the streets to protest the pandemic lockdown.

“A lot of this fear I mentioned about, a lot comes from propaganda from conservative networks downplaying the virus,” Weissman offered. “They don’t think the virus isn’t as serious as it really is and a lot of people do not believe in the numbers of the fatalities from the virus– we have Trump even called it a hoax, he called it a hoax for a long time. He waited until 70 days to finally act on it. You see people like Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, they were calling it a hoax. That’s why you have so many thinking that this is not as serious as it really is, why they have no problem going into public and protesting.”

Asked how he came to vote for Trump and then turn on him, he explained, “Well, I had a very interesting dialogue that pretty much changed my worldview with [comedian] Sara Silverman on Twitter. I learned a lot about values that liberals believe in, Democrats, even politicians like Obama and Hillary Clinton.”

Trump nominee, once a Supreme Court clerk, still unhappy at how Obamacare ruling played out

By Joan Biskupic, CNN legal analyst & Supreme Court biographer

Updated 12:00 PM ET, Sun May 3, 2020

Washington (CNN)Judge Justin Walker, now nominated to a powerful federal court dubbed "the second highest" in the nation, remains bitter that the Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act eight years ago.

Walker was serving as a law clerk at the time of the 2012 blockbuster ruling and was infuriated at its resolution. He has continued to reveal disdain for the decision written by Chief Justice John Roberts and offer details about his inside dealings with Justice Anthony Kennedy, one of the dissenters.

At a March event in Louisville, joined by Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Walker took aim at the law commonly known as Obamacare.

"The greatest words you can hear from Justice Kennedy are: 'You're hired,'" Walker said at a March 13 investiture ceremony for the district court position he currently holds. "And the worst words are: 'The chief justice thinks this might be a tax.'"

DeSantis is ready to declare victory but the coronavirus picture in Florida is still unclear

By Maeve Reston, CNN

Updated 12:13 PM ET, Sun May 3, 2020

(CNN)Epidemiologists are still baffled by how the coronavirus pandemic has played out thus far in Florida but the state's governor isn't waiting much longer to declare his response a win.

As Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis prepared to reopen much of his state Monday, he took a victory lap that began at the White House last week -- touting his "tailored" and "surgical" approach to stay-at-home orders as the central reason Florida has so far defied the dire predictions that it would become "way worse than Italy."

With his self-congratulatory news conferences, DeSantis sparked new debate over the stay-at-home measures in more restrictive states -- framing those measures as "draconian" compared to what he views as his more targeted approach. But a number of epidemiologists warned it is too early to jump to conclusions about what kept case numbers lower than expected.

Ridiculing the scientific models that DeSantis says overstated the crisis and encouraged a climate of fear, the Republican governor has chided critics who faulted his slow and often hapless response to the coronavirus in March when spring break revelers thronged Florida's beaches.

Okay Desantis, why don't you stand outside Disney World there in Orlando, and welcome the visitors without gloves or a mask on to show everyone of your fucking victory lap................or go into the stands at Daytona and shake everyone's hands ...........I am calling you a chickenshit......................lead, show how you lead by doing no gloves, no masks............

By Eric Levenson, CNN

Updated 10:49 AM ET, Sun May 3, 2020

(CNN)Matt Keough, a former major league pitcher and an occasional figure on "Real Housewives of Orange County," died Friday at the age of 64. The cause was not made public.

The right-handed, mustachioed Keough pitched in 170 games for the Oakland A's from 1977 to 1983, earning an All-Star game appearance as a rookie in 1978 and the AL's comeback player of the year award in 1980. He later spent time with the Yankees, Cardinals, Cubs and Astros, as well as with the Hanshin Tigers of the Japanese baseball league.

In his later years, Keough worked as an executive for the Athletics organization under renowned executive Billy Beane.

"Matt was a great baseball man and a proud Oakland A," said Beane, the A's executive vice president of baseball operations. "He had an incredible passion for the game and we were lucky to have him and his wealth of knowledge alongside us for the years he worked as a special assistant.
