Infection rate rises across the country as states rush to reopen

By Associated Press -May 6, 2020 11:04 AM

Pockets of America far from New York City are seeing ominous trends.

Take the New York metropolitan area's progress against the coronavirus out of the equation and the numbers show the rest of the United States is moving in the wrong direction, with the known infection rate rising even as states move to lift their lockdowns, an Associated Press analysis found Tuesday.

New confirmed infections per day in the U.S. exceed 20,000, and deaths per day are well over 1,000, according to figures from Johns Hopkins University. And public health officials warn that the failure to flatten the curve and drive down the infection rate in places could lead to many more deaths — perhaps tens of thousands — as people are allowed to venture out and businesses reopen.

"Make no mistakes: This virus is still circulating in our community, perhaps even more now than in previous weeks" said Linda Ochs, director of the Health Department in Shawnee County, Kansas.

Elsewhere around the world, Britain's official coronavirus death toll, at more than 29,000, topped that of Italy to become the highest in Europe and second-highest in the world behind the United States. The official number of dead worldwide surpassed a quarter-million, by Johns Hopkins' count, though the true toll is believed to be much higher.

GOP lawmakers cheer Texas salon owner for violating stay-at-home order

Source: American Independent

By Josh Israel -May 6, 2020 12:19 PM

Republican officials across the country have urged reopening businesses despite public health experts' advice that doing so too quickly will result in more cases of the virus.

Republican elected officials are rushing to express support for a Texas salon owner sentenced to a week in jail and a fine for reopening her business in violation of a stay-at-home order issued by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott. Members of the self-described party of "law and order" attacked a judge who enforced the order.

Dallas County State District Judge Eric Moyé sentenced salon owner Shelley Luther to seven days in jail and a fine of $7,000 for violating the stay-at-home order as well as Moyé's temporary restraining order and a cease-and-desist order from Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins.

Moyé offered her a chance to avoid jail if she apologized and agreed to close the salon until the governor's order is lifted on May 8, but she refused to do either.

In response, Republican lawmakers have rallied around her refusal to obey the orders, attacked the judge, and even helped raise crowdfunding money to assist her.

GOP congressman mocks medical experts: 'We're safer from death if we're not born'

By Oliver Willis -May 6, 2020 1:20 PM

Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD) has pushed for reopening business despite the potential for an increase in deaths.

Recent data has shown that the number of cases of COVID-19 infection is continuing to rise across the country, even as some states rush to reopen for business.

Trump: 'We want to terminate health care'

Source: American Independent

By Emily Singer -May 6, 2020 3:36 PM
Trump still supports the lawsuit that will invalidate the Affordable Care Act and cause millions to lose their health insurance.

Donald Trump on Wednesday said he still supports a Republican-led lawsuit before the Supreme Court that seeks to invalidate the Affordable Care Act, even amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

More than 1.2 million Americans have tested positive for the virus, and nearly 72,000 have died from it, according to a tally from the Washington Post.

Meanwhile, more than 30 million people have lost their jobs, and with that, they may have lost their employer-sponsored health care. Without the ACA -- better known as Obamacare -- it's unclear how those Americans would secure health insurance to pay for the cost of medical care or hospitalization if they contracted the coronavirus.

Members of Trump's own administration, including Attorney General William Barr, have urged Trump to back off its support of a lawsuit from Republican attorneys general that would invalidate Obamacare. According to CNN, those aides fear the political blowback if Obamacare is repealed, given that the law is popular.

Trump is resigned about America's economic crisis: 'That is what it is'

Published 1 min ago on May 5, 2020
By Bob Brigham

President Donald Trump did not have an answer when asked about how much further the economy will plunge during a Tuesday interview with ABC News anchor David Muir.

“There are 30 million Americans who are unemployed, you don’t need me to tell you that,” Muir said.

“We’re expecting the new unemployment rate this week, there have been forecasts, 15, 16, 17%,” he noted. “One of your advisors projected an unemployment rate of 19% — that’s nearly one in five Americans without a job.”

“How bad is this going to get?” Muir asked.

“Well, that is what it is,” Trump replied.

As President Donald Trump delivered rally-style remarks at a taxpayer-funded visit to an Arizona Honeywell plant manufacturing medical supplies for the coronavirus pandemic, commenters on social media couldn’t help but notice the event sung Trump’s praises and featured his campaign slogans as if it were a partisan rally — particularly when restauranteur Betty Rivas showed off a “Keep America Great” jacket onstage and proclaimed he would win the Hispanic vote.

Watch Wisconsin judge compare stay-home orders to WWII internment

By Oliver Willis -May 5, 2020 1:49 PM

Republican lawmakers have been challenging stay-at-home orders despite the significant risk to public health posed by COVID-19.

On Tuesday, the Wisconsin Supreme Court heard oral arguments via teleconference on a challenge from the state's Republican lawmakers to the "safer at home" order issued by the administration of Democratic Gov. Tony Evers to protect citizens during the COVID-19 outbreak and slow the spread of the disease.

During the hearing, conservative Justice Rebecca Bradley invoked the landmark United States Supreme Court case Korematsu v. United States, which allowed the government to hold Japanese Americans in internment camps during World War II. Bradley suggested that requiring Wisconsin residents to stay home, and to keep non-essential businesses closed, was similar to that decision.

Bradly was first appointed to the circuit court in Milwaukee by then-Gov. Scott Walker in 2012 and won election to the state Supreme Court in 2016 even after columns surfaced in which she said she had no sympathy for AIDS patients — she referred to them as "queers" and "degenerate drug addicts" — and called people who voted for Bill Clinton "either totally stupid or entirely evil."

Ohio to workers: No benefits if you aren't willing to risk your lives

Source: American Independent

By Emily Singer -May 5, 2020 4:54 PM

The state is encouraging employers to report workers who do not come back to reopened jobs out of fear of the coronavirus.

As Ohio Republican Gov. Mike DeWine prepares to lift many stay-at-home orders and reopen his state for business, his administration is asking employers to report workers who refuse to return to their jobs over continued fears for their health.

The Office of Unemployment Insurance Operations section of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services website has posted a form that employers can fill out and submit to notify the department when a worker has quit or refused to work when a job was available "due to COVID-19."

The form link reads, "Report COVID-19 Employee Fraud."

Since in general employees are eligible for unemployment insurance benefits only if they've lost their jobs through no fault of their own, the state would be able to use the reported information to cut off payments.

Some congressional Republicans have suggested that people will choose not to work because of the benefits included in the coronavirus relief package Congress passed last month. Republican senators, including Ben Sasse of Nebraska, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, and Tim Scott of South Carolina, had tried to make the benefits package less generous than proposed but ultimately failed.

DeWine is one of a handful of governors starting to lift social distancing measures.

DeWine urged those who can work from home to continue to do so, but is gradually allowing employers to reopen their doors. DeWine tweeted on Sunday that health care providers were allowed to reopen on May 1; manufacturing, construction, and "general office workplaces" could reopen on Monday; and retail businesses would be allowed to reopen on May 12.

The DeWine administration joins Iowa Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds in saying that residents who don't go back to work when their workplaces reopen will be ineligible for unemployment benefits. Meanwhile, though, many are afraid to go back. Infection and death rates connected with the coronavirus continue to rise across the country.

In a recent ABC News/Ipsos poll, 80% of respondents said they are worried about contracting the coronavirus.

Trump: Wind down task force because we can't stay 'closed for the next 5 years'

Source: American Independent

By Dan Desai Martin -May 5, 2020 6:01 PM

Donald Trump is prioritizing the U.S. economy over American lives.

On Tuesday, Donald Trump defended the idea of winding down the White House coronavirus task force because he is eager to reopen the American economy.

"We can't keep our country closed for the next five years," Trump said in response to reports that the task force may dissolve this month. "You can say there might be a recurrence, and there might be. And most doctors or some doctors say that it will happen, and it'll be a flame and we're gonna put the flame out."

Trump and many Republicans around the country have pushed to reopen many parts of the economy even as experts warn that such a decision will likely result in more coronavirus cases and a higher death toll.

A new model from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington estimates 135,000 deaths in the country through the beginning of August, the New York Times reported on Monday.
