Inside the West's failed fight against China's 'Cloud Hopper' hackers

Eight of the world's biggest technology service providers were hacked by Chinese cyber spies in an elaborate and years-long invasion, Reuters found. The invasion exploited weaknesses in those companies, their customers, and the Western system of technological defense.

LONDON – Hacked by suspected Chinese cyber spies five times from 2014 to 2017, security staff at Swedish telecoms equipment giant Ericsson had taken to naming their response efforts after different types of wine.

Pinot Noir began in September 2016. After successfully repelling a wave of attacks a year earlier, Ericsson discovered the intruders were back. And this time, the company’s cybersecurity team could see exactly how they got in: through a connection to information-technology services supplier Hewlett Packard Enterprise.

Teams of hackers connected to the Chinese Ministry of State Security had penetrated HPE’s cloud computing service and used it as a launchpad to attack customers, plundering reams of corporate and government secrets for years in what U.S. prosecutors say was an effort to boost Chinese economic interests.

The hacking campaign, known as “Cloud Hopper,” was the subject of a U.S. indictment in December that accused two Chinese nationals of identity theft and fraud. Prosecutors described an elaborate operation that victimized multiple Western companies but stopped short of naming them. A Reuters report at the time identified two: Hewlett Packard Enterprise and IBM.

Yet the campaign ensnared at least six more major technology firms, touching five of the world’s 10 biggest tech service providers.

Dutch railway to compensate Holocaust survivors

World News
June 26, 2019 / 11:39 AM / Updated 39 minutes ago

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The Dutch national railway NS said in a statement on Wednesday it would offer financial compensation to survivors and families of Holocaust victims who were transported via Dutch rail to Nazi concentration camps during World War II.

The railway, which is owned by the government, announced the decision at a ceremony in Utrecht. The NS said it had reserved “several tens of millions of euros” for payments to affected people, including Jews and other minority groups targeted by the Nazi regime.

An estimated 100,000 Dutch Jews - or 70% of the pre-war total - were deported and murdered in Nazi concentration camps.

MONTREAL (Reuters) - Airlines and regulators are gathering at a closed-door summit in Montreal on Wednesday to exchange views on steps needed for a safe and coordinated return of Boeing Co’s grounded 737 MAX jets to the skies following two deadly crashes.

The meeting, organized by industry trade group the International Air Transport Association (IATA), comes as airlines grapple with the financial impact of a global grounding of nearly 400 737 MAX jets that has lasted three months.

Boeing, the world’s largest planemaker, has yet to formally submit proposed 737 MAX software and training updates to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which will kick-start a re-certification process that could take weeks.

IATA Director General Alexandre de Juniac has said “shoring up trust among regulators and improving coordination” within an industry that grounded the MAX planes on different dates in March would be priorities at Wednesday’s summit.

It is the second such meeting organized by IATA.

Trump says Fed should cut U.S. rates; Powell doing 'bad job'

Source: Reuters

Business News
June 26, 2019 / 9:01 AM / Updated 3 hours ago

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday called on the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates so the United States can compete with countries that he said are devaluing their currencies.

Trump said Fed Chair Jerome Powell was doing a “bad job” managing policy as countries like China stimulate their economies.

“He has to lower interest rates for us to compete with China,” Trump told Fox Business Network, adding that other counties are also stimulating their economies. “If they devalue and we can’t we are no longer on a level playing field.”

Trump said he believed he had the right to fire or demote Powell. But he said: “I never suggested I was going to do that.”

GOP senators refuse to address 16th sexual assault allegation against Trump

By
Lisa Needham -
June 26, 2019

Trump faces yet another credible allegation of sexual assault, but his party just doesn't care.

Republicans have now had several days to comment on the 16th sexual assault allegation against Trump. Instead, they're pretending it isn't even worth paying attention to — and some are outright defending Trump.

Writer E. Jean Carroll came forward Friday with a horrific story of being raped by Trump in the mid-1990s. Trump, predictably, had a disgusting response to the allegations, saying Carroll was "not my type" and that "it never happened." He even said he'd never met her, in spite of the fact that Carroll's article contains a picture of them together.

Even though both Carroll's story and Trump's denial have dominated the news, members of Trump's party are making a point of either ignoring or downplaying the allegation.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has yet to comment on Carroll's allegations. When asked outright if he had anything to say about Trump's response, he would only say, "I don’t have any comments about that."

The fucking turtle has spoken: "I don’t have any comments about that."

194 Republicans vote against back pay for federal workers hurt by Trump's shutdown tantrum

By
Lisa Needham -
June 26, 2019

The House GOP thinks that low-wage workers who lost five weeks of pay during Trump's unnecessary shutdown don't deserve to be repaid.

It's not surprising, but it is disappointing.

On Tuesday, Republicans in the House almost uniformly voted against giving low-wage federal contractors they back pay they lost during Trump's 35-day government shutdown stunt.

A full 194 of the chamber's 198 Republicans refused to vote for an appropriations bill that would help make federal contractors whole. Those low-wage employees — service workers, laborers, and mechanics — lost out on five weeks of pay while Trump shut down the government in a tantrum because no one wanted to fund his border wall.

Thankfully, since the Democrats hold the majority, the bill passed the House regardless.

The measure is hardly a windfall. It would cover up to $965 per employee per week, or less if the employee's actual pay was lower.

Matt Gaetz worries Mueller's testimony to Congress will lead to Trump's impeachment

By
Emily Singer -
June 26, 2019

The Republican congressman has every reason to be concerned.

Former special counsel Robert Mueller is set to testify before two House committees on July 17, and at least one top Trump defender is scared.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) said on Fox News on Tuesday night that he's scared Mueller's public testimony will lead to Trump's impeachment.

"I hope we are not in store for 'impeachment-by-surprise,' as this seems to feed into the elements of the Democratic Party that are more focused on President Trump — and sort of relitigating the Mueller report — than in dealing with the humanitarian crisis at the border or dealing with many of the other challenges that I think a lot of swing-district Democrats would like to be working on at this time," Gaetz said, after two House Democratic committee chairs announced Mueller's testimony.

First, Gaetz has reason to be worried.

Trump explodes in racist rant after US soccer star says she won't visit the White House

By

Trump can't handle being rejected for his racism, so he exploded with racism again.

Trump lashed out at USA soccer star Megan Rapinoe Wednesday morning, which quickly devolved into a racist rant about the NBA.

Team USA is currently competing in the World Cup tournament.

"I'm not going to the fucking White House," Rapinoe told reporters in a video posted online Tuesday.

After weeks of decrying the 'humanitarian crisis' at the border, House Republicans reject border aid

The GOP lawmakers who demanded immediate action now are accusing House Democrats of playing politics.

Despite labeling the current situation at the southern border a “humanitarian crisis,” 191 members of the House Republican caucus on Wednesday night voted against a $4.5 billion emergency aid package meant to provide proper care for migrants being held in horrific conditions inside U.S. detention facilities.

The bill eventually passed by a margin of 230-195.

House Republicans have for months demanded billions in emergency supplemental funding to address the massive border crisis, which is largely of President Donald Trump’s own making. But given a chance to address it, Republicans this week demurred.

Republicans argued that Trump would not sign the bill, as it was focused on humanitarian aid rather than a punitive approach.

Warren's brilliant plan to neutralize Republican voter suppression

Build a wall around voting rights. If they try to go around the wall, surround them with a moat.
Ian Millhiser
Jun 25, 2019, 3:15 pm

Senator and presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) released a “plan to strengthen our democracy” on Tuesday.

Much of Warren’s plan tracks the For the People Act of 2019, the legislation commonly referred to as “H.R. 1,” which House Democrats passed last March. What sets Warren’s plan apart is the sophisticated mechanisms she uses to insulate voting reforms from state officials hostile to voting rights.

Warren’s plan is not a perfect solution to the problem of anti-democratic state officials, and, like nearly all laws, it is defenseless against a rogue Supreme Court that is determined to give an electoral advantage to Republicans. Nevertheless, it’s a thoughtful effort at least, to mitigate red states’ ability to sabotage pro-democratic reforms.

The Warren plan includes many of the same reforms included in H.R. 1, a bill which represents the consensus among congressional Democrats and voting rights groups. Like H.R. 1, Warren pushes for enhanced election security, automatic voter registration, early voting at least 15 days before the election, and independent redistricting commissions to thwart gerrymandering, among other things.

https://thinkprogress.org/elizabeth-warrens-brilliant-plan-to-neutralize-republican-voter-suppression-7331889580b3/

-snip-

The single biggest threat to democracy in the United States is Senate malapportionment. By 2040, according to a University of Virginia projection, half the country will live in just eight states. That’s 16 senators for half the population and 84 for the other half. In a nation where partisanship correlates closely with population density, that means that the Senate is also an existential threat to the Democratic Party.

Any serious plan to fix American democracy, in other words, must include a proposal to admit new states (and, most likely, to chop up old states) in order to mitigate malapportionment.

The second criticism is that no matter how well-designed Warren’s plan may be, it is doomed if the Supreme Court’s Republican majority is determined to strike it down by any means necessary. To save democracy, in other words, the next president may need a plan to neutralize the Supreme Court.
