Lawsuit over Trump tax evasion in Panama takes a strange turn

Disputes about confidentiality rankle both sides as the lawsuit moves forward.

From suspicions of money laundering, to watching his name vanish from the building’s facade, President Donald Trump’s former property in Panama has long served as one of the main headaches for the president’s ongoing business struggles since his ascension to the presidency.

Now, an ongoing lawsuit threatens to open a new chapter in the saga of the former Trump Ocean Club property — and fresh questions about the building’s finances.

The building, over which Ivanka Trump helped oversee construction and development, transferred to new owners last year, with Trump’s name being removed wholesale from the building. Led by majority owner Orestes Fintiklis, the new owners recently filed a lawsuit in the Southern District of New York alleging that they’d uncovered financial records showing that the Trump Organization had spent years dodging Panamanian taxes.

As The Washington Post summarized:

In the filing, Fintiklis does not give a dollar figure for the amount of taxes Trump allegedly evaded. But he says his company could now face “millions of dollars in liability” if Panama demands that it pay the taxes Trump did not. Fintiklis also asserts that the Panamanian authorities have audited the hotel’s books and “identified the failure to withhold and pay income taxes relating to Trump’s management fees.”

In other words besides being a tax fraud, he is also a deadbeat, and a cheater...........................and since panama is a signed member of Interpol, maybe they should send out a warrant for his daughter and his arrest.........................

It's Not Just Warren. The Next Democratic President Is Coming for Your Monopoly

By Mike Dorning
July 3, 2019, 4:00 AM EDT

Elizabeth Warren slammed Washington for failing to challenge giant corporations. Bernie Sanders assailed the power of Wall Street and the pharmaceutical industry. Cory Booker vowed to appoint more judges and antitrust enforcers and even Joe Biden is preparing a trust-busting plan.

Democratic presidential hopefuls are coming out in force against the rapid pace of corporate consolidation, a message to 2020 voters that gained volume during their first debates in Miami last week. They’re expanding their pledges to take on big tech, including Facebook Inc. and Alphabet Inc., to other industries.

Attacking big corporations is both a political message and a policy prescription. It’s one way Democrats think they can address the concerns of voters who have fallen behind, even as the U.S. economy continues to expand. As Democrats gear up to try to take back the White House in 2020, they hope the anti-corporate tone taps into the populist passion that propelled Donald Trump in 2016.

“Whoever is elected on the Democratic side would be more aggressive on antitrust than we have seen in decades,” said Jason Furman, a former chairman of President Barack Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers who chairs a U.K. initiative on digital competition.

SUPREME COURT NOTEBOOK: Is Ginsburg using words carefully?

By MARK SHERMAN and JESSICA GRESKO 32 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — It’s been another taxing term for reporters who try to forecast the outcome of high-profile Supreme Court cases.

Many of us wrote that based on arguments in late April, the court’s five conservative justices would allow the Trump administration to go forward with a citizenship question on the 2020 census.

That turned out not to be true when Chief Justice John Roberts joined with the court’s four liberals, in a decision announced last week, to keep citizenship off the census questionnaire , at least for the time being. The administration said Tuesday it would drop its effort to put its question on the form.

But perhaps we did not focus enough on a hint dropped by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in early June. In a speech to lawyers and judges in New York, Ginsburg described those predicting the administration would win the case as “speculators.” The Merriam-Webster dictionary says a speculator may take something “to be true on the basis of insufficient evidence.”

-snip-

Send more women to Washington. That was what Ginsburg had to say Tuesday during an event at Georgetown law school in the nation’s capital, where she was asked about the number of women in politics. Yes, no woman has served as president, but voters sent a record number of women to Congress in the last election.

“Impressive numbers, but not enough. That’s right,” said Ginsburg, who co-founded the American Civil Liberties Union Women’s Rights Project before she was a justice.

Joyce Vance explains why Congress gave Mnuchin 'enough rope to hang himself' before suing to get Tru

Published 3 hours ago

By David Edward

Former U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance on Tuesday explained why the Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee waited weeks to file a lawsuit after Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin refused to obey the law and hand over President Donald Trump’s tax returns.

On Tuesday, Chairman Richard Neal (D-MA) announced that his committee is suing the Treasury department which failed to produce six years of Trump’s tax returns.

The lawsuit comes after Mnuchin rejected a request for the president’s tax returns in May.

In a tweet on Tuesday, Vance noted that courts are not designed for “instant gratification.”

“[Chairman] Neal took time to get the govt’s position locked in, giving Mnuchin enough rope to hang himself & establishing there’s no legitimate legal basis to w/hold Trump taxes,” she wrote. “Lawsuits aren’t on an instant gratification timeline, which is frustrating but important to understand.”

Final: USA 2, England 1

The defending champions were without co-captain Megan Rapinoe, one of the tournament’s leading scorers. But her replacement, Christen Press, scored the game’s first goal, and the deep American team won its 11th straight World Cup match, a record.

The United States will be heavily favored in Sunday’s final against Sweden or the Netherlands, who will play on Wednesday. It is the Americans’ third consecutive World Cup final.

Tory 'Gaukward squad' hardens stance against no-deal Brexit

Hammond hints he could vote against next Tory PM and warns of £90bn hit to finances

The next prime minister will have to reckon with a reinvigorated “Gaukward squad”, including David Gauke and Philip Hammond, who are determined to block a no-deal Brexit if they are dispatched to the backbenches, senior Tories warn.

The Conservative leadership race has been dominated by Brexit, with Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt both insisting they would be willing to contemplate leaving without a deal if they could not secure concessions from Brussels over the summer.

Hammond, who has made a series of increasingly forthright interventions in recent days, dropped a heavy hint on Tuesday that he would be prepared to vote against a no-deal Brexit, even if it meant breaking the party whip. The chancellor has not ruled out serving in a Johnson government, but the frontrunner is widely expected to sack him, as is his rival Hunt.

Hammond answered Treasury questions from MPs in the House of Commons in what may have been his final outing at the dispatch box on Tuesday and pointed to forecasts suggesting no deal would blow a £90bn hole in public finances over the next 15 years.

Brexit party MEPs turn backs on Ode to Joy at European parliament

Source: The Guardian

Nigel Farage faces wall with party members for European anthem on opening day

Nigel Farage and his Brexit party MEPs turned their backs during the playing of the European anthem at a ceremony to mark the opening of the European parliament.

As a saxophone quartet and opera singer performed Beethoven’s Ode to Joy in the Strasbourg chamber on the first day of the new parliament, the 29 Brexit party MEPs turned away from the group to face the back wall.

The European parliament’s president, Antonio Tajani, rebuked those MEPs who did not immediately get to their feet. “[It] is a question of respect; it doesn’t mean that you necessarily share the views of the European Union. If you listen to the anthem of another country you rise to your feet.”

Labour’s leader in the European parliament, Richard Corbett, later described the move as pathetic.

Congress demands White House fork over Ivanka's work emails from her private account

The House Oversight Committee is upping requests after months of obstruction from the Trump administration

Trump attacked his 2016 opponent Hillary Clinton for her limited use of a personal email when she was the nation's top diplomat, but Trump officials aren't known to practice what they preach.

In a letter to the White House, the House Oversight Committee demanded Monday that the administration turn over all messages and communications that Trump senior officials — including Trump's daughter and her husband, Jared Kushner — sent through personal accounts, in order to evaluate whether they broke federal law. The committee previously asked for certain documents, but following obstruction from the administration, the House is upping its requests.

"The purpose of this investigation is to determine why White House officials used non-official email accounts, texting services and encrypted applications for official business," the letter said.

Ivanka Trump has been one of the most prolific users of personal email for government business under the current administration. From December 2016 throughout September 2017, Ivanka sent hundreds of emails under a private domain to government officials potentially in violation of the Presidential Records Act, which requires official business to be conducted on official government accounts so information can be stored and preserved.

Ocasio-Cortez slams Fox News host for comparing detention camp abuse to a house party

By

July 2, 2019

Fox News' Brian Kilmeade said the deplorable conditions at Trump's detention camps were just like a house party.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) slammed Fox News host Brian Kilmeade on Tuesday after he compared the conditions at Trump's detention camps to a "house party."

Kilmeade made his comments while discussing the overcrowding of detainee facilities, highlighted by a visit on Monday by congressional Democrats.

"Picture yourself, you have a house, family of five. You have a party, you have 30 people over," Kilmeade said.

"Maybe you have a big party and you have 100 people over and you have two and a half baths. In the beginning, it would be OK with 30. Then after 100 people, it would be a little bit taxed, maybe you got to get an outdoor facility. Can you picture 5,000? You can have the best facilities in the world but they are so overstocked."
