WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler said on Friday that he will go to court on Friday to seek access to grand jury evidence compiled by former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s 22-month probe of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
A second pending legal move by Democrats, a federal lawsuit to compel testimony from former White House Counsel Don McGahn about Republican President Donald Trump’s efforts to impede the Russia probe, will come early next week, Nadler told CNN.
McGahn, a star witness in the 448-page Mueller report released in April, told federal investigators that Trump directed him to seek Mueller’s removal and then to deny that he had been instructed to do so. Democrats view the alleged episode as an act of obstruction of justice that could lead to impeachment proceedings against Trump.
“We will win the court fight because the legal excuses the White House has been using are extraordinarily weak from a legal point of view,” Nadler told CNN.

But Democrats say that testimony from McGahn about Trump’s efforts to remove Mueller could give them the evidence they need for an impeachment inquiry. McGahn declined to testify earlier this year after the White House directed him not to cooperate with the committee.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. economic growth in 2018 missed the Trump administration’s 3% target by any measure, which could renew criticism of the White House’s $1.5 trillion in tax cuts.
The Commerce Department said on Friday that gross domestic product increased at a 2.9% rate last year, confirming an estimate which was published in March. The department’s annual revisions to GDP data also showed the economy growing 2.5% in the 12 months through the fourth quarter of 2018, down from the previously reported 3.0%.
President Donald Trump had highlighted the year-on-year growth figure as proof that the tax cuts and a government spending blitz, which have helped to swell the federal government deficit, had put the economy on a sustainable path of strong growth.
The White House and Republicans have argued that the massive tax cuts, which included slashing the corporate tax rate to 21% from 35%, would pay for themselves through strong economic growth. Democrats assailed the tax cuts as benefiting wealthy Americans at the expense of the middle-class.

Growth in the first quarter of 2018 was revised up to a 2.5% annualized rate from 2.2%. Second-quarter growth, which prompted Trump’s mission accomplished declaration, was cut to a 3.5% pace from a 4.2% rate. Growth in the third quarter was slashed to a 2.9% rate from a 3.4% pace. Fourth-quarter GDP growth was lowered to a 1.1% pace from a 2.2% rate.
The downward revisions to the three quarters largely reflected downgrades to business investment, suggesting corporations likely did not plow their tax windfall back into their businesses. Some companies like Apple (AAPL.O) used their windfall for share buybacks.
But the lower taxes boosted savings last year. The saving rate was raised to 7.7% from 6.7%, reflecting upward revisions to repatriated profit from the rest of the world. Corporate profit estimates were, however, marked down in both 2017 and 2018.

The Trump Administration, after making a mess of security clearances for federal workers and contractors, is about to hand off to the Pentagon the biggest change in the clearance system in a half-century.
Concern about the security clearance system is not new, but the Government Accountability Office documents serious deterioration since Trump took office. The GAO is the investigative arm of Congress.
The Trump Administration did such a poor job with security clearances that in 2018 the GAO put the entire security clearance system on its High-Risk List.
That’s not surprising given Donald Trump’s continual attacks on our national intelligence agencies as he praises the integrity of Vladimir Putin.

Carla Provost is seeking to minimize her role in the recently exposed Facebook group.
Acting Border Patrol chief Carla Provost said on Monday that she only joined a secret Facebook group — in which border patrol agents exchanged cruel messages mocking migrant families who have died attempting to seek refuge in the U.S. — to answer questions about "Jeopardy!"
Provost was asked about her decision to join the group when she appeared before a House Appropriations subcommittee.
"I did not even know at the time what group I was on or whether I was on a group," Provost claimed. "I did a search for myself — and because people were talking about the fact that I had been on a Jeopardy question — so I searched myself and that came up." She said she commented on a post within the group "because my agents were talking about me."

His first public comments after Robert Mueller testified, reporters at the White House asked Donald Trump about the hearings, and Donald became furious.
Robert Mueller said that it's possible to indict a sitting president, but that a president can be charged after he leaves office. Trump's reaction was to blow up at reporters and call them fake news.
He singled out a reporter and then lied about what Mueller said about the particular instance saying, "And you still ask the question. You know why? Because you’re fake news, you’re one of the worst.”

In long-awaited testimony to Congress, former special counsel Robert Mueller contradicted President Donald Trump, confirming that his investigation did not exonerate the president.
“And what about total exoneration,” House Judiciary Committee Chair Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) asked Mueller, echoing a claim Trump and his allies have repeated often. “Did you actually totally exonerate the president?”
“No,” Mueller responded succinctly.
“Now, in fact, your report expressly states that it does not exonerate the president?” Nadler continued.

“I see a number of serious shocks on the horizon that could cause our economy’s shaky foundation to crumble,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) wrote in an article posted to the website Medium on Monday.
We should listen to her. The senator and presidential candidate obviously has an interest in painting the man she hopes to replace as a poor steward of the economy, but she also brings an unusual amount of expertise to this topic. A former Harvard law professor and arguably the nation’s leading expert on bankruptcies, Warren spends much of her article citing news stories demonstrating that she correctly predicted the 2008 recession and many of its causes.
Warren is hardly alone in raising alarms. According to a February survey by the National Association for Business Economics, which Warren also cites in her piece, “three-fourths of the NABE Policy Survey panelists expect an economic recession by the end of 2021,” while “42% say a recession will happen in 2020.”
Which brings us to a potential nightmare scenario for Democrats. The worst case for Warren’s party in 2020 may not be a Trump victory. It’s a scenario where Warren (or some other Democratic nominee) wash President Donald Trump out of office, but some combination of House gerrymandering and Senate malapportionment gives Republicans control of at least one house of Congress.

The nightmare of American democracy is that it is not really democracy. We hold elections and have two rival parties. But the deck is stacked so heavily in favor of one of those parties that there are few scenarios that lead to meaningful Democratic victories. And each time America holds an election that does not swing the Democrats’ way, the number of future scenarios that favor the Democratic Party grows smaller.
If you are a Democrat, your best hope is to fight for a 2020 victory that is so overwhelming that it will overcome gerrymandering, overcome the Electoral College, overcome Senate malapportionment, and then hope that this new government is able to keep the economy roaring for long enough to ward off a crippling loss.
And, along the way, hope that this new government is able to enact sweeping democratic reforms — including admitting many new states — that will allow both parties to compete in fair elections moving forward.
It really is getting tiresome to have republicans fucking the country while in power and then democrat(s) taking back power to correct the fucking........................and then we get blamed......................not this time
