Lindsey Graham a must read on Health Care

Oh jeez, not this again:

Senate Republicans are trying to build momentum for a last-gasp bill to replace the Affordable Care Act, swearing that they are once again just a few votes short of delivering on their seven-year pledge.

Could this really happen? New York magazine's Margaret Hartmannthinks it's possible:

... something shifted on Thursday. After making a presentation at the GOP caucus lunch, Graham said Majority Leader Mitch McConnell “encouraged everybody to jump onboard,” adding, “I can tell you this if we had a vote right now we would get 47, 48 votes.”

If they want to do this, it has to happen by the end of the month, after which they'll need 60 votes, not 50, for repeal. It's a tight squeeze. But they're going for it.

This is about more than Obamacare. In the near term at least, it's also about control of the president. He's cheating on Republicans with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, largely because he can't manage to cut any deals with Republicans and he wants to be with a party that will do the things for him that his party won't do.

How bad is the bill? This bad:

Former Trump aide liquidated childrens college fund to pay for Russia defense: report

Source: The Hill

A former campaign adviser to President Trump said the ongoing federal probe into alleged ties between the Trump campaign and Russia has taken such a financial toll on him that he's had to liquidate his children's college fund to pay for legal counsel.

"It's very expensive and nobody's called me and offered to help," Michael Caputo, who worked in the Trump campaign’s communications department, told The Washington Examiner.

"The problem is, it's very specialized representation, so it takes a certain type of attorney, and they're quite competent. And you'll pay for competency," he continued. Caputo said he has hired a New York-based attorney.

The former campaign adviser said the probe was politically motivated, and aimed at "destroying" the president's allies.

These Three Advertising Networks Are Powering Fake News

Reprinted with permission from MediaMatters.

A Media Matters review of 100 websites that publish fake news found that 84 percent use at least one of three specific advertising networks for revenue.

Much of the public criticism about the proliferation of fake news in the past year has focused on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. While those platforms are vital in driving traffic to purveyors of fake news, less attention has been devoted to the series of advertising networks that help fake news websites turn those clicks into money. Creating revenue streams for websites that post this sort of content gives them an incentive to spread misinformation. For example, CNN reported in September that fake news purveyors from Macedonia, where much of this type of content originates, get their “profits … primarily from ad services such as Google’s AdSense.”

The review found that the examined fake news purveyors use three advertising networks far more than others: Google AdSense, Revcontent, and Content.ad. AdSense appeared on 41 fake news-purveying websites, Revcontent on 40, and Content.ad on 36. The websites don’t use these networks exclusively, often employing multiple advertising networks concurrently.

Worry about the spies, not thieves, who may have breached Equifax

The Equifax breach stole names, addresses, birth dates, and credit card numbers for over 200,000 consumers. One might immediately assume that cyber criminals made the attack in order to sell the information to identity thieves who will run up fraudulent charges, file fake tax returns, defraud mortgages and loans, purchase goods with stolen credit cards or steal a subscription to HBO in time for next season’s Game of Thrones.

But where most see thieves, I see spies.

The cyber intrusion also stole documents used in disputes for approximately 182,000 people. This includes personal identifiable information that sophisticated attackers could use to gain entry into medical records, bank accounts, employer email accounts and networks — virtually anywhere that a person has an online presence. Most consumers are still slow to adopt secondary protection schemes like two-factor authentication and continue to use challenge questions that relate directly to their personal lives. If a spy agency in China, North Korea or Russia (the three most likely culprits in the Equifax breach) has this information, they could use it to infiltrate other accounts of targeted individuals, particularly those persons of interest in government agencies.

Trump moving toward energy exploration in Arctic wildlife refuge: report

Source: The Hill

The Trump administration is working to allow energy exploration in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) for the first time in more than three decades, The Washington Post reported Friday.

In a memo dated Aug. 11, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Acting Director James Kurth directed the agency's regional director for Alaska to get rid of the time constraints listed in a rule that allowed exploratory drilling in the refuge between Oct. 1, 1984 and May 31, 1986.

"When finalized, the new regulation will allow for applicants to [submit] requests for approval of new exploration plans,” the memo reads, according to the Post.

That memo also notes that the Fish and Wildlife Service was asked to update the rule by the Interior Department, though it isn't clear who requested the change.

The House just passed a bill that could politicize churches

The U.S. House of Representatives quietly passed a spending bill on Thursday that could transform churches and other houses of worship into entities more closely resembling SuperPACs.

When House members passed a $1.2 trillion “megabus” spending bill yesterday in a 211-198 vote, media attention largely focused on the proposal’s high cost and potential challenges in the Senate. But according to the House Appropriations Committee press release, the bill contains a rider with a provision that would make it difficult to enforce the so-called Johnson Amendment, a part of the tax code that prohibits churches and other houses of worship from endorsing political candidates.

“Members of Congress had ample opportunities to strike [the provision] from this bill; when it was debated at the sub-committee level, at the full committee level, when Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz offered an amendment to cut it from the bill, and when it was on the floor of the House of Representatives,” Larry T. Decker, Executive Director of the Secular Coalition for America, said in a statement. “At every point, Congress failed to stand up for a law which has helped maintain the separation of church and state for more than 63 years.”

WSJ: Pro-Russia GOPer Pitched WikiLeaks Pardon Deal To White House

Source: Talking Points Memo

By TIERNEY SNEED Published SEPTEMBER 15, 2017 6:04 PM

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), an eccentric lawmaker known for his pro-Russia stances, proposed to the White House a pardon deal for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in a Wednesday phone call Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Rohrabacher suggested to President Trump’s chief-of-staff, John Kelly, that the administration end Assange’s various legal problems in the U.S. In exchange, Assange would turn over a digital storage device that Rohrabacher said would clear Russia of allegations of interference in the 2016 election, according to the report.

The congressman told Kelly that if what Assange turned over was not the proof promised, “he would get nothing, obviously,” according to the report. Over the course of summer 2016, WikiLeaks published thousands of emails from Democratic officials believed to have been the target of a hacking campaign backed by the Russians.

Rohrabacher traveled to London last month to meet with Assange at the Ecuadorean embassy, where the WikiLeaks founder is avoiding extradition to the U.S. Once the meeting was reported, Rohrabacher indicated his plans to tell Trump what he heard from Assange. On Thursday, he told the Los Angeles Times he had “spoken to senior people at the White House about arranging a meeting” with the President.

Trumps Latest DOJ Nom Was At Key Meeting With Comey And Sessions

Source: Talking Points Memo

By TIERNEY SNEED Published SEPTEMBER 15, 2017 4:51 PM

The Justice Department aide who the White House announced Friday would be President Trump’s pick for a top DOJ position appears to have also been present at a key meeting between Attorney General Jeff Sessions and then-FBI Director James Comey.

Jody Hunt, Sessions’ chief-of-staff at the Justice Department and Trump’s pick to be assistant attorney general of the department’s Civil Division, will have to go through a Senate confirmation process that will include a grilling by the Judiciary Committee. Among the things the committee members may want to ask him about was a meeting that occurred between Sessions and Comey in February.

The day after Trump pressured Comey to go easy on former National Security Advisor Mike Flynn, Comey met with Sessions and was said to have told Sessions he did not want to be left alone with Trump again. In Comey’s account, he raised concerns about Trump telling everyone else, including Sessions, to leave the Oval Office after a counter-terrorism meeting, while asking to speak to Comey alone.

Comey was ultimately fired by Trump — a move now the focus of congressional and federal investigations.

New CBO Report: Trumps Refusal To Pay Obamacare Subsidies Will Raise 2018 Premiums By 15 Percent

Reprinted with permission from AlterNet.

President Trump is poised to punish 12 million Americans getting health care through Obamacare’s non-group policies by raising their premiums 15 percent in 2018. That’s the conclusion of a report released Thursday by the Congressional Budget Office/Joint Committee on Taxation on the impact of Trump’s refusal to say if the federal government will pay the Affordable Care Act’s subsidies in 2018.

“In 2018, the agencies project, the average benchmark premium will be roughly 15 percent higher than it was in 2017, largely because of short-term market uncertainty—in particular, insurers’ uncertainty about whether federal funding for certain subsidies that are currently available will continue to be provided—and an increase in the percentage of the population living in areas with only one insurer in the marketplace,” the CBO/JCT said.

In 2017, 12 million people bought non-group health plans through the ACA’s exchanges, of which 8 million received subsidies. The CBO/JCT report says the number of individuals seeking Obamacare coverage and receiving subsidies is slated to grow by 1 million in 2018. But a lack of subsidies and higher premiums, if implemented, would reverse that.
