Without Leonard Leo, GOP Agenda Would Be 'Toast'

Conservative activist Leonard Leo helped elect a judge in Wisconsin. Without him, the GOP feared their agenda would be “toast,” according to an email.

Series: Friends of the Court:SCOTUS Justices’ Beneficial Relationships With Billionaire Donors

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’ decades long friendship with real estate tycoon Harlan Crow and Samuel Alito’s luxury travel with billionaire Paul Singer have raised questions about influence and ethics at the nation's highest court.

In July 2015, Wisconsin’s Supreme Court shielded Gov. Scott Walker, then a rising Republican star with aspirations to the presidency, from a criminal investigation.

The court’s conservative majority halted the probe into what prosecutors suspected were campaign finance violations. One of the deciding votes was cast by Justice David Prosser, a conservative who had won reelection a few years earlier in a heavily contested race. During the race, a state GOP operative said if their party lost Prosser, “The Walker agenda is toast,” according to an email included in a trove of documents the Guardian surfaced. Another vote for Walker came from Michael Gableman, a justice who had also waged a contentious campaign for his Wisconsin Supreme Court seat.

The high court, determining the prosecutors had overreached, ordered the investigation’s documents destroyed. But not before the Guardian got its hands on a copy. And buried in the 1,500 pages was a reference to a key figure in propelling both Prosser and Gableman to victory: the co-chair of the right-leaning legal group the Federalist Society, organizer of dark money groups and conservative strategist Leonard Leo.

In a written statement, Leo said state courts “are more independent and impartial today than they were when trial lawyers and unions dominated state judicial races without any counter.”

Hey Leo , have you ever heard or read what 50+1 means when unions have votes on wages, health care and such.......that's called majority rule....not 49+1 or 48+ 1 ...... we don't like fascists, authoritarian oligarchy neophytes, that's apparently what the Federalist Society Judicial Crisis Network ( Concord Fund ) is all about, packing courts to enable one person rule and remove the 50+1 rule.... ....

Can A Real Democrat Defeat Joe Manchin AND Jim Justice?

Meet West Virginia Progressive Zach Shrewsbury. Remember, Bernie did extremely well in the 2016 West Virginia primaries, besting Hillary statewide and beating Trump’s vote totals in county after county. These are the voters who are Shrewbury’s base of support.

I’ve been speaking with dedicated West Virginia progressive, Zach Shrewsbury— politically a Bernie kind of guy, not a Joe Manchin kind of guy. In fact, Zach has just launched a campaign for the Senate seat Manchin holds-- and may or may not run for next year. Blue America endorsed Zach today and we’re hoping you’ll contribute to his 100% grassroots campaign here. Bernie did extremely well in the 2016 West Virginia primaries, besting Hillary statewide and beating Trump’s vote totals in county after county. These are the voters who are Shrewbury’s base of support.

He’s a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, community organizer and a West Virginia political activist. He grew up on a farm in Monroe County, attended James Monroe High School and played soccer. Once he graduated it became clear he had very limited choices— working a minimum wage job, going to college, working the coal mines or joining the military. “The four choices,” he told me, “presented to most West Virginians every day. I couldn’t survive working minimum wage. The coal mines, though they paid well, were always being shut down or laying off workers or changing hands, even though they had plenty of profit, so the lack of the stability and low wages left me with trying what a lot of us did. College. I quickly realized that I wouldn’t be able to afford 4 years of higher education and I didn’t want to drive myself into student loan debt. Even in 2009, I was acutely aware that accumulating student loan debt would be detrimental for me, so I avoided driving myself into that financial burden. Instead, I joined the USMC as an infantryman and served part of it on a Fleet Anti-Terrorism Security Team. Five years later my amazing son was born, I had made life long friendships and saw portions of the world very different from Monroe County. I also realized how bad things had become back home.”

I asked Zach to share his odyssey with us to help us get to know who he, why he’s running and how he’s going to flip what everyone outside of West Virginia says is the “reddest” state in the whole country. Please take a look at what he has to say and consider getting behind a real effort to defeat multi-millionaire elitists Joe Manchin and Jim Justice.

House Speaker Has 9 More Republican Candidates

A crowded field vies for the honor of more public humiliation on Tuesday.

By Ed Scarce — October 23, 2023
Republicans being Republicans, their internal vote will be behind closed doors and a secret ballot will be held on Tuesday morning. Then Patrick McHenry will offer to the House their latest candidate to be ripped apart by his fellow Republicans.

What fun.

Source: Politico

The House GOP’s enormous speaker field is officially set, with nine Republicans seeking to somehow unify their splintered party after almost three weeks without a leader.

It’s the most crowded field since former Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s fall 19 days ago. The latest round of candidates includes current GOP leaders — like Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) and Vice Chair Mike Johnson (R-La.) — as well as more surprising rank-and-file members like Reps. Jack Bergman (R-Mich.). Another last-minute addition, Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Ala.), who serves as GOP policy chair, raised eyebrows on Sunday.

John Oliver Does A Deep Dive Into The Powerful McKinsey & Co.

A lot of the information in here may be genuinely surprising to people out there, from the company’s list of former employees, to the discretion that they use.

By Susie Madrak — October 23, 2023
So John Oliver took on McKinsey & Co. last night, the scandal-ridden consulting behemoth that has fingers in almost every significant American pie. (See what I did there?) Via the Matt & Jess blog:

For those who are unaware, McKinsey & Company has a rather lengthy history within the business world, working with government agencies and also with major brands like Coca-Cola and then also Best Buy. Sure, a management consulting company may not be the most exciting thing in the world, but Oliver does have a tendency to add a little bit of flair to everything, no?

While there was a lot of humor within this segment, a lot of the information in here may be genuinely surprising to people out there, from the company’s list of former employees to the discretion that they use. This honestly felt like a pretty evergreen segment for a show that prides itself (in the title, no less) on chronicling the past seven days of news. Yet, they’ve also strayed more and more from that over the past several years.

Liz Cheney calls Afghanistan withdrawal 'biggest mistake' since 9/11 despite Iraq war

By David Edwards
Published October 22, 2023 9:41AM ET

Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) called President Joe Biden's withdrawal from Afghanistan "the biggest mistake" the U.S. has made since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

During a Sunday interview on CNN, host Jake Tapper asked Cheney "what lessons we've learned" that could help Israel in its war with Hamas.

"Well, look, I think probably the biggest mistake that we made post-9/11 was President Biden's decision to withdraw from Afghanistan the way that he did," Cheney said. "I think the biggest lesson that we've learned, and frankly, after 9/11, the fact that the steps we took for over 20 years now have prevented another mass casualty terrorist attack at the hands of Islamic terrorists, is something that we all ought to be very clear about and we ought to remember."

Hey Cheney do you remember this .....fact check..... and has a victim of 9/11, who was sitting a classroom reading a childrens book about a goat and who was vice-president.....and if you have the means just type in your good old fishing daddy and 9/11 and see what he said .......

'Beyond the pale': ABC host hits Tim Scott for saying Biden has 'blood on his hands'

By David Edwards
Published October 22, 2023 10:18AM ET

Republican presidential candidate Tim Scott said he does not regret claiming President Joe Biden has "blood on his hands" after Hamas attacked Israel.

While appearing on ABC's This Week, host Jonathan Karl pressed Scott on his claim that U.S. "weakness" led to the terrorist attacks.

"That didn't really sound like the Tim Scott that I know, the hopeful, optimistic campaign you talked about running," Karl noted. "But sometimes, in the heat of the campaign, you say things that may be a regret. Do you regret saying that, saying that the President of the United States has blood on his hands?"

https://www.rawstory.com/tim-scott-biden-blood-on-his-hands/

Hey Karl, who is the Tim Scott that you know......lets bring back his both sides BS..... and your comments Scott, that in every election there is cheating.....really how about legailzed gerrymandering....that dude is cheating....and its called ratfucking....and you Scott just throw out your clickbait BS to make some on your side of stupidity should not trust elections......how did you get elected then.....

US comedian Jon Stewart's talk show on Apple TV+ has reportedly been canceled after just two series due to clashes between its host and the company over topics such as China and artificial intelligence.

Stewart told staff that executives from Apple -- which has vast commercial interests in China and AI -- had expressed concern over proposed new content for "The Problem with Jon Stewart," The New York Times said.

Apple did not immediately respond to AFP's request for comment.
