GOP congresswoman: No need for more gun violence research, the NRA has us covered

Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-NY) said Thursday that it would be a waste of federal tax dollars to look into how to stop tens of thousand of annual gun deaths.

Nearly 40,000 people die annually from gun deaths in the United States. Thanks to the gun lobby, the federal government has largely been prohibited from doing research to figure out how to reduce those numbers. But Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-NY) said Thursday that she thinks any more research would be a waste of money. Her reasoning: the National Rifle Association already has done all the research we need.

Tenney, who is facing a close re-election race in New York’s 22nd Congressional District, debated her Democratic opponent, Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi (D), on Thursday night. After bragging about being “very proud” of her “A” rating from the NRA, she was asked by the moderator whether she would support funding to study gun violence in this country. Without hesitating, Tenney made clear she would not.

In 1996, the National Rifle Association and one of its champions, then-Rep. Jay Dickey (R-AR) pushed through Congress a legislative provision that effectively blocked Centers for Disease Control doing any research on the causes of gun violence in America. In 2015, after a mass shooting in Oregon, even Dickey himself suggested that his amendment should be scrapped and that federal research was needed to find ways to stop the problem. Following the horrific mass killings in Parkland, Fla., Congress passed a bill in March that lifted the prohibition but did not appropriate the funds for such research.

Tenney said Thursday that it would be a waste to spend money on this research, because we already know all we need to know. “We’ve spent a fortune studying gun violence,” she claimed. “One of the things the NRA does, it was actually founded in New York City. The prime purpose, the reason that [the] NRA was founded was to provide education and safety for people handling firearms. So we want to spend more tax dollars to study something that we already know a lot about? I don’t think that’s a good use of taxpayer money. ”

This hypocrite, that would say what she said in the beginning quotes headlines, shows that for one...................if her kids got killed by a gun she would have no empathy, because the only thing she thinks about is getting tax dollars from the taxpayers at $174,000 a year and also getting paid off by an industry that basically promotes death at our expense.................

Two, for every gun injury in this country our heath care system is taxed to the max for the harm that it has caused, the bankruptcy it can inflict on the victim if they survive and the family of the victim in hospital and after care costs.................

How dare she say that the NRA has her covered..................no lady they have us covered in blood and they got money from the fucking Russians............................who fucking side are you on ......................that is the question......who's side are you on.................apparently not the American side................except your side of greed and Russians..................

Trump claims a majority of undocumented immigrants skip their court dates. Here are the facts.

Over 90 percent follow the rules.

REBEKAH ENTRALGO NOV 2, 2018, 10:49 AM

President Donald Trump made an outrageous claim during a Thursday afternoon briefing on immigration. His assertion: Only 3 percent of undocumented immigrants released while their asylum cases are pending ever show up for their court hearing.

“We’re not letting them into our country, and they never show up. Almost like a level of 3 percent,” the president said Thursday. “They never show up for the trial, so by the time their trial comes, they are gone.”

Wrong. The government’s own data even proves that statement is incorrect. According to a Justice Department report from the Executive Office For Immigration Review, in 2017 that number was actually 89 percent, and has consistently remained high. In 2016 it was 91 percent and from 2014 to 2015, it was higher than 93 percent.

This data is also backed up by the American Immigration Council, which concluded that from 2001 to 2016, 90 percent of asylum-seeking families show up at the courthouse. Even the Republican-friendly Center For Immigration Studies concedes that these families consistently follow the rules and meet their court dates.

And the immigrants don't give false testimony in depositions, like you have asshole, and they don't defraud a state in taxes to the tune of 400 million dollars.....................like your family has............so your one to talk...............

Trump official whines about 'ethics checks' for corrupt administration

By Oliver Willis - November 1, 2018

Despite the massive corruption in the Trump administration, national security adviser John Bolton is complaining that 'so-called ethics checks' have gotten 'excessive.'

A senior member of Trump’s corruption-plagued administration is complaining about how hard it is to vet prospective government employees to make sure they’re not corrupt.

John Bolton, Trump’s national security adviser, complained at a meeting of the right-wing Hamilton Society that ethics guidelines are supposedly making it too hard to hire new people.

Bolton claimed that due to the “excessive nature of the so-called ethics checks,” it’s “harder to get things done” compared to his time serving under President George H.W. Bush.

As far as Bolton is concerned, ethics guidelines are part of a “system to discourage people from coming into government.”

Editorials slam GOP Senate nominee: 'Straight out of the 50s -- the 1850s'

By Dan Desai Martin - November 1, 2018

Rep. Lou Barletta (R-PA) is lambasted for his extreme anti-immigrant agenda as his Senate campaign falters.

Rep. Lou Barletta (R-PA) is running for Senate on an anti-immigrant platform so racist one editorial board blasts him for embracing policies “straight out the the 50s — the 1850s.”

Barletta is far behind in the polls, and his virulent anti-immigrant rhetoric does not seem to be motivating voters nor impressing editorial boards.

The Unionville Times endorsed Barletta’s Democratic opponent, Sen. Bob Casey, and had choice words for the misguided policies pushed by Barletta.

“Barletta’s positions would seem to be in opposition to much of those of the residents of Chester County — a county that depends on immigrant labor for much of our crucial agricultural industry,” the board wrote. “With a forward look toward an America that will likely be majority non-white within a couple of decades, it does not make sense to embrace policies, straight out of the 50s — the 1850s — in selecting a U.S. Senator.”

GOP nominee ditches debate to go to Trump rally, then blames opponent

By Dan Desai Martin - November 1, 2018

Brian Kemp is a liar.

Georgia Republican nominee for governor Brian Kemp is a liar. Or, as many folks in Georgia might say on a Sunday morning, he has borne false witness against his neighbor, Democratic nominee Stacey Abrams.

The two candidates, locked in a tight race to be Georgia’s next governor, agreed more than six weeks ago to a Nov. 4 debate on live television.

Just a few days before the debate, Kemp suddenly pulled out, refusing to stand next to Abrams and discuss the issues.

His reason? Rather than talk to the people of Georgia, Kemp wants to stand next to Trump, who is coming to Georgia for a rally at the same time.

The Abrams campaign called Kemp to task for breaking his word.

After Kemp pulls out of original debate, candidates unable to agree on alternative

ATLANTA - WEDNESDAY 7:00 p.m. UPDATE:

After Kemp pulled out of the original agreed upon date and time, the candidates cannot agree to Monday at 7:30 p.m., citing scheduling conflicts. (You can read Abrams' campaign's and Kemp's campaign's full statements below)

Here is the full release from WSB-TV:

The final debate in Georgia's hotly contested governor's race set for Sunday at 5 p.m. has been canceled. The debate was originally scheduled and agreed to by all three candidates six weeks ago. Kemp pulled out on Tuesday in order to attend President Trump’s rally in Macon occurring at the same time. Trump announced the rally on Monday.

“We regret that we had to cancel but once Secretary Kemp pulled out at the last minute, the candidates could not agree to a new time," said Channel 2 News Director Misti Turnbull.

“Our number one concern is giving Georgia voters what was promised, and that is a debate with all the candidates,” Turnbull said. "As in past major elections, we work to bring the candidates together in a debate forum, so the viewers and their constituents can hear each candidate's responses to pressing questions.”

Can young people take back Wisconsin from Scott Walker's hard-right grip?

Walker has undone Wisconsin’s progressive past and turned it into a lab for rightwing governance – but millennials have a different vision for the future

Scott Walker has governed Wisconsin since 2010 – but polling suggests Walker is in the fight of his life this time around.

Walker has undone Wisconsin’s progressive past and turned it into a lab for rightwing governance – but millennials have a different vision for the future.

Outside the Chazen Art Museum on the campus of the University of Wisconsin–Madison, a shark, a banana and Nada Elmikashfi are trying to corral students to the polls for the first day of voting.

Madison, the liberal heart and state capital of Wisconsin, is in the final stages of a squeakingly tight race to decide the political future of this once progressive state that is now deeply conservative – at least in terms of policy.

Like many of the young voters on campus, Elmikashfi, a fellow with NextGen America, a liberal political advocacy group, is determined to reverse the state’s decade-long lurch to the right. Beneath a cornflower blue sky Elmikashfi and two friends in fancy dress are handing out leaflets explaining why this midterm vote is so important. And why is it so vital to her? “I’m a black Muslim woman and an immigrant,” she says. “I am trying to reclaim my voice.”

And the main stream tv media is saying what again...................the young people are not voting..............I think that is BS, I think they are voting..............

'Idaho's hope': could Paulette Jordan be the first Native American governor in the US?

The Democrat, whose grandparents were tribal chiefs, offers progressive solutions for a state struggling with healthcare, education and more

Paulette Jordan was not going to let her opponent have the last word.

The Democratic nominee for Idaho governor is a night owl and stayed in her office past 1am for her final marathon session of debate prep. Dressed in sweatpants and a running jacket and drinking yerba mate tea for energy, she rehearsed until she couldn’t any more.

On stage 16 hours later, when the Republican candidate, Brad Little, said Jordan’s “special interest” money came from Native American tribes, she didn’t let him finish.

“They’re not ‘special interest’,” said Jordan, a member of the Coeur d’Alene tribe, looking her opponent in the eye. “Tribes are called sovereign nations.”

“Oh, ‘sovereign nations’!” Little responded, throwing his hands up in the air.

“They are also individuals, human beings,” Jordan fired back.

Racial gerrymandering kept Navajos from power. Is that about to change?

Republican-drawn voting districts left Native Americans voiceless despite their majorities. This election could bring sweeping change

The community gathering took place in the northern reaches of the Navajo Nation. Hundreds of people lined up in view of Monument Valley’s towering red mesas to enjoy traditional singing and dancing but also to register to vote – and end the legacy of racial gerrymandering that, for decades, has blocked Native Americans from power in this isolated corner of the American west.

Here in southern Utah’s red rock country, as in other rural reaches of the US, Democrats are working hard to make the so-called blue wave a reality. But the history of disenfranchisement has cast a long shadow over the Navajo Nation, one they hope they can throw off in the election.

Today, Native Americans, who lean heavily Democratic, make up a slight majority in San Juan county, which encompasses this part of Utah. But for decades they were “packed” by Republican officials into a single district in the county’s southernmost reaches, echoing other partisan gerrymandering efforts across the US.

In 2016, a federal judge ruled that San Juan county had violated the Voting Rights Act of 1965 by illegally drawing contorted voting districts to disenfranchise Native American voters. In a follow-up ruling last December, the judge handed down newly drawn district maps that give Navajos a majority by population in two of the county’s three commission districts. If Navajo candidates win next week, it could reshape the region.
