Salon: My day with Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton

My day with Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton: Two Iowa rallies explain why Hillary may be about to blow a sure thing
EDWARD MCCLELLAND

On Sunday morning, I sat in a coffee shop in Cedar Rapids, eating one of Iowa’s famous boxing-glove-sized cinnamon rolls, and scanning the Des Moines Register, which was cover-to-cover rally reviews. (“Glenn Beck Comes to Iowa to Endorse Cruz”; “Trump: I Could ‘Shoot Somebody’ and Keep Voters.”) Hillary Clinton was in Marion at 12:30, Marco Rubio in Cedar Rapids at 2, Bernie Sanders in Independence at 5:30. I decided to hit all three events.

. . .

Yet the dour New England socialist is the sunny one in this race. Clinton looks back, and is frightened. Sanders looks ahead, and sees the America he’s been trying to build since he moved from Brooklyn to Vermont in the 1960s: an America in which new mothers and fathers will be guaranteed three months of parental leave, the minimum wage will pay $15 an hour, free college tuition will be funded by a tax on financial speculation, and every citizen will be insured by a single-payer health care system.

“What this campaign is about is transforming America,” Sanders said. “Nothing that I said to you today is utopian; nothing is radical. Nothing that I have said does not exist in other countries, and nothing I have said to you today is not wanted and supported by the American people. The American people want to raise the minimum wage, they want pay equity, they want to create jobs by building our infrastructure, they want to make colleges and universities tuition free, they want to expand Social Security, not cut Social Security. They want us to deal effectively with climate change. They want to end a corrupt campaign finance system. None of this is radical. None of it is pie in the sky, and I told you how we could pay for each of these programs. The issue is not whether the American people want it; the issue is whether or not we have the courage to take on the greed of the billionaire class, who want it all for themselves. That is what this campaign is about.”

. . .

The latest CNN Poll of Polls shows Sanders leading Clinton in Iowa, 46 percent to 44 percent. The caucuses favor true-believing ideologues with motivated followers. Advantage: Sanders. A win in Iowa, followed by a certain victory in New Hampshire, would give Sanders the credibility to pitch himself to Southern voters. Once again, Hillary Clinton may be on the verge of blowing a sure nomination. Even if she wins, her pessimistic message would not sound appealing against Marco Rubio, who gave his Cedar Rapids audience a sunny vision of capitalism as “the only system that can make poor people richer without making rich people poorer.”

Here's What's So Jarring About Hillary Clinton's Thoughts On Reconstruction

At the the Iowa Democratic forum on Monday night, Hillary Clinton took one of the easiest questions lobbed her way -- Who is your favorite president? -- and blasted it right into the back of her own goal.

She did fine with the first part, naming Abraham Lincoln, but then dipped into the history of Reconstruction, bemoaning the vengeful way in which the North targeted the South after Lincoln's assassination.

"You know, he was willing to reconcile and forgive. And I don't know what our country might have been like had he not been murdered, but I bet that it might have been a little less rancorous, a little more forgiving and tolerant, that might possibly have brought people back together more quickly. But instead, you know, we had Reconstruction, we had the re-instigation of segregation and Jim Crow. We had people in the South feeling totally discouraged and defiant. So, I really do believe he could have very well put us on a different path."

. . .

After the Civil War, freed slaves were given the right to vote, and people who participated in the rebellion were temporarily barred from the ballot. The Union army was used to assure that the elections would be honored. Imagine if a big chunk of today's Republican Party was blocked from voting, and you can get a sense of the political leaning of the Congress, legislatures and governors in power immediately after the war. Congress passed a Civil Rights Act and a series of sweeping and, for the time, radical Constitutional amendments. For the first time, legislatures in the South created public schools and put an effort into public health. The Democratic Party of the time settled on a path of obstruction, determined to undermine the Reconstruction legislatures. The white supremacists chose that path not because Reconstruction was failing, but because they were afraid it would work.

. . .

In real life, freed slaves were not passive victims of Klan violence, but fought back in ways both organized and spontaneous -- a resistance that never died, even in the darkest days of Jim Crow.
One of the historians we spoke to for the podcast, Douglas Egerton, put it this way: "Reconstruction didn't fail in the South. It was killed. It was murdered."

Munich Police warn of Planned Terrorist Attack

Source: CNBC

Police in Munich, Germany acknowledged Thursday that they know about a possible planned terrorist attack, as major cities around the globe continued to take safety precautions on New Year's Eve.

Two Munich trains stations — Hauptbahnhof and Pasing — were evacuated, police told NBC News. In a tweet, authorities asked people to avoid large crowds in the city, one of Germany's largest.

The nature of the threat and who made it were not immediately clear, but police said they were investigating potential suspects. They said they would provide updates on social media.

Three assclowns break up an event in Seattle

And a few people here lap it up. To the credit of the membership here, most reject this nonsense.

I question whether these fools had anything to do with BLM. None of them tried to address the crowd, to speak eloquently about the hundreds of men who have lost their lives needlessly at the hands of killer cops. They were only interested in stopping the event by yelling and threatening people.

I suspect this was a paid political operation using Saul Alinsky-type tactics. You saw similar tactics by Republicans in Florida in 2000.

Who benefits? Not black people. Not progressives. Who?

Why Tom Cotton really wants to kill the Iran deal

Tom Cotton is one of the Republican Senators from Arkansas. He has announced that Congress will "kill this deal" with Iran. http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/tom-cotton-iran-nuclear-deal-dangerous

Cotton beat Mark Pryor in his Senate race in 2014. He received $960,250 from the "Emergency Committee for Israel." http://www.opensecrets.org/pacs/indexpend.php?cmte=C90013244&cycle=2014 That's over 70% of the money the Emergency Committee doled out during the 2014 campaign.

As an aside, one really wonders what "the Emergency" is? Israel has stockpiled at least 200 nuclear warheads, probably more, receives more US aid than ever, has a robust economy, cannot be successfully attacked by any (or all) of its neighbors and now suffers few serious terror incidents while still incrementally colonizing Palestine. Some "emergency."

The "Emergency Committee" is run by one of the more notorious supporters of Israel - Neo-con William Kristol, the arrogant and slightly effete founder of the Rightist Weekly Standard and denizen of the MSM talk show circuit. Just to show you that talent really does rise, this guy was once Chief of Staff for that intellectual heavyweight, Dan Quayle.

Kristol has made a nice living off Israeli cheerleading and his other neoconservative ventures. He and his wife are worth nearly one-quarter of a billion dollars ($250,000,000,000). http://iflizwerequeen.com/tag/bill-kristol He can afford to drop a little bank on a rising Republican Star to advance his vision of neocon glory and probably increase that net worth.

Time for Tom Cotton to pay back his Godfather.

Campaign Donations Linked to White Supremacist

Source: NY Times

The leader of a white supremacist group that has been linked to Dylann Roof, the suspect in the murder of nine African-Americans in a Charleston, S.C., church last week, has donated tens of thousands of dollars to Republican campaigns, including those of 2016 presidential contenders such as Ted Cruz, Rick Santorum and Rand Paul, records show.

Mr. Cruz, a Texas senator, said Sunday night that he would be returning about $8,500 in donations that he had received from the Texas donor, Earl Holt III, who lists himself as president of the Council of Conservative Citizens.

“We just learned this evening that Mr. Holt had contributed to the campaign,” a spokesman for the Cruz campaign said in an email to The New York Times. “We will be immediately refunding all those donations.”

US Marines on the Ground in Iraq as ISIS Burns 45 Alive
The Fiscal Times By Riyadh Mohammed

Iraqi local officials in Iraq’s town of al-Baghdadi have warned of another ISIS mass burning massacre. The terror organization surrounded a compound several days ago that houses more than 1000 families and burned 45 people alive.

“ISIS has killed more than 150 people from al-Obaid tribe...some of them were burned alive and some were beheaded...they were policemen...some of them fought against ISIS before,” said sheikh Mal Allah al-Obaidi, the head of the local council in the al-Baghdadi.

An Iraqi air base is located next to al-Baghdadi. More than 300 US military service members are providing training, and coordinating US air raids there. As the US military official at the central command announced that the US will train 12 Iraqi brigades to start an Iraqi operation to liberate the northern city of Mosul in April or May, reports emerged suggesting US Marines will conduct a limited operation in the border area between Iraq, Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia to strike ISIS jihadists who control the border area.

“US forces have landed in al-Habbaniya air base,” said Saadon Shehan, a blogger from al-Ramadi, the provincial capital of al-Anbar province in western Iraq.

Charlie Hebdo: Niger protesters set churches on fire

Source: BBC News

At least two churches have been set on fire in the capital of Niger amid fresh protests against French magazine Charlie Hebdo's cartoon depicting the Prophet Muhammad.

Saturday's protests began outside Niamey's grand mosque with police using tear gas a day after at least four were killed in the second city of Zinder.

The French embassy has warned its citizens to stay indoors.

Last week, Islamist gunmen killed 12 people at the magazine's Paris offices.

. . .

In Niger, a former French colony, hundreds of demonstrators gathered at Niamey's grand mosque, shouting "God is Great" in Arabic.

At least two churches were set on fire - similar to Friday's demonstration in Zinder where protesters also raided shops that were run by Christians.
