They go low, we go high.

Relying on bumper sticker slogans as political strategy is a fucking disaster.

I wish she’d never uttered the words.

A black student wrote those racist messages that shook the Air Force Academy, school says

Source: Washington Post

In late September, five black cadet candidates found racial slurs scrawled on message boards on their doors at the U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School. One candidate found the words “go home n‑‑‑‑‑‑” written outside his room, his mother posted on social media, according to the Air Force Times.

But on Tuesday, the school made a jolting announcement. The person responsible for the racist messages, the academy said, was, in fact, one of the cadet candidates who reported being targeted by them.

“The individual admitted responsibility and this was validated by the investigation,” academy spokesman Lt. Col. Allen Herritage said in a statement to the Associated Press, adding: “Racism has no place at the academy, in any shape or form." The cadet candidate accused of crafting the messages was not identified, but the Colorado Springs Gazette reported that the individual is no longer enrolled at the school. Sources also told the Gazette the cadet candidate “committed the act in a bizarre bid to get out of trouble he faced at the school for other misconduct,” the newspaper reported.

The announcement thrust the Air Force Academy Preparatory School onto a growing list of recent “hate crime hoaxes” — instances in which acts of racism or anti-Semitism were later found to be committed by someone in the targeted minority group. It’s unclear exactly what prompts people to commit these hoaxes, stunts and false reports. But such revelations have become a major concern for civil rights activists who document racist and anti-Semitic incidents, particularly amid a rise in reported hate crimes since the 2016 general election.

This is heartbreaking; I don't think people realize how much damage this causes...

Mayor Pugh comments on vandalism of Francis Scott Key statue

Source: ABC

Wednesday morning, people in Bolton Hill found red paint covering the Francis Scott Key statue in downtown Baltimore.

The monument was covered from the sidewalk, all the way up to the top of its columns. Someone also sprayed the words 'racist anthem' and 'slave owner' on the statue and sidewalk.

In a statement, Mayor Catherine Pugh says, "Freedom of speech is welcome in the city of Baltimore, but not at the cost of our public spaces and neighborhoods. Vandalism of any kind is unacceptable, and those found to be associated with this crime will be charged."

If you are letting Trump's words/lack of words and their timing control your emotions...

...the Idiot-in-Chief has already won.

We need to get over this hand-wringing approach that says that Trump should do or say something just because we think he should. This guy doesn't give 2 shits what we, or really any voter thinks, and he will NEVER do what you think/want him to do just because you think/want him to. The day you accept that you have zero control over his statements/non-statements, the far happier you'll be.

And let's evaluate what we're trying to accomplish with this hand-wringing anyway: what are you expecting the perfect statement to accomplish? Just like someone's "hearts and prayers" going out doesn't change one damn thing about innocent death(s), no statement from Trump is going to stop a stupid, inbred white supremacist from being and acting like a white supremacist. They aren't going to stop what they're doing because Trump says they're naughty.

There's a reason we were brought up on "sticks and stones may break my bones...". Words/lack of words hurt us because we've made the personal decision to allow them to do so, and the Orange one is gleeful over the fact that we've chosen that path.

What would it take for the "n-word" to actually stop being used?

Racial slurs against other ethnic groups (Asians, Jews, Hispanics, etc.), while still harmful when used, don't seem to be nearly as widely heard anymore. Honestly? I can't remember the last time I heard any of the more common racial slurs against these groups.

The n-word? Heard it probably a dozen times today on the radio alone. Granted, partially bleeped out, but it's there in nearly every hip hop song. Why is it that the n-word hasn't at least somewhat died off in our modern culture?

And if we wanted it to go away (which I think most decent people would), what would it take for it to no longer be funny or cool for ANYONE to say it?

Didn't Rev. Jesse Jackson try years ago to get even the hip hop community to drop it? A noble goal but apparently that was an abject failure.

Is terrorism now both expected and accepted as part of life? ? ?

The first DU thread on the Greatest Page regarding the 20+ innocents murdered in the UK is #29, embarrassingly even below a thread dedicated to discussion of actor Roger Moore's death.

To DUers and the world at large, are terrorism and the victims it takes basically a non-event these days? Like a traffic jam on your way home...unfortunate and disruptive but something we'll forget about again until we're in the next one?

Did I miss it, or does Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month get ignored by DUers?

3 months ago (and every February actually) this place was an amazing resource for weeks in a row for all things Black History, yet it's May 23rd and I don't even see a single post, even in the Asian Group itself.

Much love to all my friends of Asian and Pacific Island backgrounds!
