Anti-choicers are being deceptive & dishonest. Again (or it It 'still'?)

Tara Culp-Ressler reports for ThinkProgress on the anti-choice movement’s newly emerging strategy to dishonestly frame the most common — and safest — method of mid-trimester abortion as a process of “dismembering unborn children.” She says that several states are considering legislation based on the emotionally evocative but clinically misleading description, and argues that it is reminiscent of the debate over “partial birth abortion.”

*Please, let's call them 'anti-choice,' not 'anti-abortion.' Everyone is really anti-abortion, but reasonable folk want the choice.*

Perry: 'Senators talk' but governors rule

Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) says that governors are much better suited for the presidency than senators a useful argument for him to make as he looks to position himself for a potential 2016 bid against a field likely to include several senators.

If our Founding Fathers were all Christians, why did they say this?

DailyKos

by Tolerant Libertarian

Nobody can deny the fact that Christianity has played a huge role in our history. From the first Thanksgiving to the ideas of Jesus Christ that are embroidered in our culture today, Christianity and the Bible is responsible for a big part of our heritage.

However, many conservatives will take this fact way out of context. They'll think that you have to be a Christian to be patriotic, which is simply not true. Following the more secular teachings of Jesus Christ (being charitable, loving one another, treating strangers with kindness) is what the men who founded this country were for.

I don't want to waste my time listing all these obscurant far-right arguments, so instead I'll list the facts straight from our forefathers.

“If I could conceive that the general government might ever be so administered as to render the liberty of conscience insecure, I beg you will be persuaded, that no one would be more zealous than myself to establish effectual barriers against the horrors of spiritual tyranny, and every species of religious persecution.”

- George Washington, letter to the United Baptist Chamber of Virginia (1789)

“Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, then that of blindfolded fear.”

- Thomas Jefferson, letter to Peter Carr (1787)

"In regard to religion, mutual toleration in the different professions thereof is what all good and candid minds in all ages have ever practiced, and both by precept and example inculcated on mankind.”

- Samuel Adams, The Rights of the Colonists (1771)

“Persecution is not an original feature in any religion; but it is always the strongly marked feature of all religions established by law. Take away the law-establishment, and every religion re-assumes its original benignity.”

- Thomas Paine, The Rights of Man (1791)

“Congress has no power to make any religious establishments.”

- Roger Sherman, Congress (1789)

"The way to see by faith is to shut the eye of reason."

- Benjamin Franklin, Poor Richard's Almanack (1758)

"I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people build a wall of separation between Church & State."

- Thomas Jefferson, letter to the Danbury Baptists (1802)

"To argue with a man who has renounced the use of reason is like administering medicine to the dead."

- Thomas Paine, The American Crisis No. V (1776)

“Our civil rights have no dependence on our religious opinions, any more than our opinions in physics or geometry.”

- Thomas Jefferson, A Bill for Establishing Religious Freedom (1779)

"Christian establishments tend to great ignorance and corruption, all of which facilitate the execution of mischievous projects."

- James Madison, letter to William Bradford, Jr. (1774)

"There is nothing which can better deserve our patronage than the promotion of science and literature. Knowledge is in every country the surest basis of public happiness."

- George Washington, address to Congress (1790)

"During almost fifteen centuries has the legal establishment of Christianity been on trial. What has been its fruits? More or less, in all places, pride and indolence in the clergy; ignorance and servility in the laity; in both, superstition, bigotry and persecution."

- James Madison, General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Virginia (1785)

Amid pending federal contempt charges, Rankin County School hands out judgement for 'belief in God'

After a judgement for violations of the First Amendment was made against them in Federal court, Rankin County School District's has continually laughed in the face of the Judge Carlton Reeves' decision. Doing everything from passing out Bibles to students to having local church pastors as guest speakers leading them in school prayer it is clear that the district simply gives no fucks.

Dianne Herman Ellis, a Mississippi attorney who is working with the American Humanist Association on the Federal case against the Central Mississippi school district says, "Rankin County just can't act right, no matter what they are told. They are teaching students that you can break the law if you want to, because of your beliefs, and that is not the lesson that we need for the future leaders of our state."

... Parents and students alike have grown weary over the constant religious pressure from this school district. Last year, students were forced to attend a mandatory group hosted by local pastors, in which they were asked to turn from sin and follow Christ. While only a few weeks ago, they made national headlines for refusing a student request for a Gay-Straight-Alliance, then opting to simply change school policy to require parental consent for all student groups-- clearly targeting and halting the ability for LGBT students in this Central Mississippi town  to seek private solace in this very important school group.

(Note upset parent found in child's backpack)

they now know that their baseball skills will be judged by their belief in God and his works instead of whether or not they can hit a home run. The need for practice is now released, while personal responsibility for one's own failures becomes a thing of the past, because Jesus. And, if you don't win, it is because God hates you or you don't love him enough.

2.12 million vehicles recalled for air bag, seat belt problems

According to a release, the vehicles were subject to recalls in 2012, 2013 and 2014 that resulted from NHTSA investigations to address a problem with an electronic component that might cause airbags or seat belt pretensioners (devices that tighten your seat belt) to deploy when they should not.

The NHTSA recently determined that a small number of vehicles that had been fixed under those recalls had experienced inadvertent airbag deployments, and the agency urged all three automakers to issue new recalls.

Below is a list of recalled vehicles:
     •    2002-2003 Jeep Liberty and 2002-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokees (about 750,000 vehicles);
     •    2003-2004 Honda Odyssey and 2003 Acura MDX (about 370,000 vehicles);
     •    2003-2004 Pontiac Vibe, Dodge Viper and Toyota Corolla, Toyota Matrix and Toyota Avalon (about 1 million vehicles, not all of which were sold in the United States)

You can check your vehicle’s identification number (VIN) online by clicking here ( http://www.safercar.gov/vin ) to see if it’s included in the recall. You will also receive a notice in the mail from your vehicle’s manufacturer if it is included in the recall.

Seahawks fans heartsick after learning their Super Bowl tickets don't exist

KIRO-TV – Seattle

SEATTLE —

Countless fans are brokenhearted before Super Bowl XLIX after ticket brokers sold them tickets that they never had.

Hey @KIRO7Seattle. Ticket scam = 9yo heartbreak. Please look in to http://t.co/irZIS80gT4. Ruined trip of lifetime. pic.twitter.com/QM1OLvHz7Q

On Saturday, viewers sent in emails and tweets, reporting they had their dreams stolen before the Seahawks even had the chance to play the New England Patriots in the big game.

When KIRO-TV met Rohan Joseph at Sea-Tac Airport on Saturday night, he was just off the plane from Phoenix, where he’d hoped to watch the Super Bowl.
(snip)

As pumped as he was to watch his Hawks play in the big game, he found out Saturday morning from Phoenix that the Super Bowl ticket he already paid for at face value from teamtix.com didn’t exist.

"It's kind of like predatory lending, I guess – like they sold me tickets they didn't have. That's kind of messed up in my mind,” Joseph said.
(snip)

ESPN calls the practice "short selling" and says hundreds of fans are affected.
