Sanders: African-Americans lost half their wealth because of Wall Street collapse
"Turns out that the African-American community and Latino community were hit especially hard," Sanders said. "As I understand it, the African-American community lost half of their wealth as a result of the Wall Street collapse."
That claim stood out to us. Is it true that black wealth was slashed so dramatically as a result of the financial crisis?
Sanders understood correctly. His campaign referred us to a 2013 report from the National Association of Real Estate Brokers.
"According to the report, African-Americans have lost over half of their wealth since the beginning of the recession through falling homeownership rates and loss of jobs," it reads.
The report refers to Pew Research Center data from 2011 that shows the median net worth of black households decreased by 53 percent from $12,124 in 2005 to $5,677 in 2009. Technically, this loss fits the timeline of the housing crisis in 2006.

Many people are excited about the prospect of having our first woman president. But, Hillary Clinton is an entrenched establishment politician who is tied to Wall Street. She voted for the Iraq war and has received millions in donations from big corporations. We can't let the campaign we've built get funneled behind business as usual politics.
The billionaires are afraid of us: the corporate-controlled media distorts our message; they reduced the amount of debates, and over 150 prominent Democrats endorsed Clinton while only a handful endorsed Bernie. The Democratic Party leadership is sabotaging Bernie's campaign, not overseeing a fair and democratic election, and we need to fight back. When Clinton and the Democratic Party establishment attack Bernie, we need to be organized to respond with an active campaign across the country and lay the basis for a lasting movement.
Inequality and Racism are Running Rampant
Bernie's campaign has opened up an urgently needed debate about an alternative to capitalism -- democratic socialism.
Just 20 billionaires in the U.S. now have more wealth than the combined wealth of the poorest 50% of Americans. Children should not be living in poverty in the richest country on earth, and millions of people who work every day should not struggle to put a roof over their heads.
This economic insecurity and anger is creating fertile ground for far-right politicians like Trump to whip up racism and anti-immigrant sentiment, dividing working people and distracting us from our common enemy, Wall Street and the big-business politicians who keep us poor. This fuels the racist mass incarceration system, devaluing Black lives and people of color generally. It fuels the attacks on women and their reproductive rights. But it also fuels our determination to build toward a real political alternative for working people.

Bernie Sanders releases riveting ad featuring daughter of police chokehold victim Eric Garner
Source: New York Daily News
Bernie Sanders has released a dramatic new ad featuring an impassioned plea by Erica Garner, the daughter of police chokehold victim Eric Garner, for Americans to vote for the surging progressive presidential candidate.
The four-minute online ad begins with Garner talking about her daughter having learned about the civil rights struggle in the U.S. in school.
"She just learned about Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King," says Garner, sporting a black sweatshirt emblazoned with her father's last words "I can't breathe." "I had to explain to her that it's not really over."
Garner, who endorsed Sanders' White House bid last month, then invokes her father's death, explaining that her backing of the Vermont senator can help "get the truth out to tell (Eric Garner's) side of the story."

It's easy to see why the government had to crush the Black Panthers. When working class people unite across the color line and take control of their own lives, that's a huge threat to capitalist control. It simply can't be allowed.
