Montini: The making of a milquetoast maverick – John McCain

source: AZCentral

"...'...
Asked if he would reject Trump after the primary and withdraw his endorsement, McCain told a reporter, “No. There’s no reason to do that.”

Not if he wants to keep his seat.

More so, perhaps, if he wanted to keep his dignity. "

Donald Trump's New Campaign C.E.O. Recorded Using Anti-gay Slur

source: Vanity Fair

" Donald Trump has cycled through a series of campaign leaders, each brought on to remedy the Republican nominee’s head-spinning presidential bid, but each turning into a headache himself. The latest campaign savior turned liability is former Breitbart News executive Stephen Bannon, who Trump named his campaign C.E.O. earlier this month. The campaign shake-up, which included the elevation of G.O.P. pollster Kellyanne Conway to campaign manager, was at the time seen as both a slight and solution to Paul Manafort, Trump’s former campaign chairman, who was drawing unwanted attention over his controversial business ties to Russia and Ukraine. But in the two weeks since Bannon took the helm, Trump’s campaign has been rocked by a string of allegations against the media firebrand, including a decades-old domestic-abuse charge. And the bad press isn’t stopping.

The latest of Bannon’s past transgressions to come to light is a comment he made in a five-year-old interview, in which he calls progressive women “dykes.” In a 2011 radio interview with Political Vindication Radio, Bannon said that conservative women—such as Ann Coulter, Michele Bachmann, and Sarah Palin—are an “existential threat to the progressive narrative” and as a result “there are some unintended consequences of the women’s liberation movement. That, in fact, the women that would lead this country would be pro-family, they would have husbands, they would love their children,” he said, as BuzzFeed News first reported. “They wouldn’t be a bunch of dykes that came from the Seven Sisters schools up in New England. That drives the left insane and that’s why they hate these women,” Bannon continued.

N.Y. high court broadens definition of parent in landmark ruling

source: Reuters

" In a landmark ruling for non-traditional families in New York, the state's highest court on Tuesday held a person need not have a biological or adoptive relationship with a child to be considered a parent.

The decision by the New York Court of Appeals gives such individuals legal standing to seek custody or visitation rights.

The state's earlier definition of parent had become "unworkable" given today's increasingly varied family relationships, Judge Sheila Abdus-Salaam wrote on behalf of five members of a six-judge panel.

Montini: Trump says Kaepernick should find another country (Or, should Trump?)

source: AZCentral

" You’d like to believe that a person running for president of the United States would understand and appreciate -- and celebrate --the right of a U.S. citizen to speak his mind.

After all, speaking his mind is exactly what Donald Trump has been doing for the better part of a year. Saying outrageous things. Terrible things. Hurtful, ugly things.

And it is totally his right.

Reagan solicitor general: Donald Trump is a risk we can't take

source: CNN

"Editor's note: Charles Fried is the former solicitor general of the United States for President Ronald Reagan. He is currently a professor at Harvard Law School. The opinions expressed in this commentary are those of the author.

(CNN) It was urgent that Hillary Clinton in her Reno speech indict Donald Trump for his regular, unremitting embrace of the slogans, causes and emblems of the far right (not conservative, please!) hate-mongering fringe of our public discourse.

This is not just an accidental association. It is his chosen signature. Remember, he was an enthusiastic birther and has gone on to embrace every sinister paranoid fantasy since.

These are not ghosts you can raise just when it seems convenient or because a particular crowd might thrill to them and then when the time comes to govern you can waive aside and pretend you never summoned them. You lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas. And these fleas carry the disease of virulent hatred and discord.

Not a Drill: SETI Is Investigating a Possible Extraterrestrial Signal From Deep Space

source: MSN News

" An international team of scientists from the Search For Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) are investigating mysterious signal spikes emitting from a 65 billion year-old star in the constellation Hercules–95 light years away from Earth. The implications are extraordinary and point to the possibility of a civilization far more advanced than our own.

The unusual signal was originally detected on May 15, 2015 by the Russian Academy of Science-operated RATAN-600 radio telescope in Zelenchukskaya, Russia but was kept secret from the international community. Interstellar space reporter Paul Gilster broke the story after the researchers quietly circulated a paper announcing the detection of “a strong signal in the direction of HD164595.”

The mysterious star’s designation is HD164595 and it’s considered to be sun-like in nature with a nearly identical metallic composition to our own star. So far, a single Neptune-like (but warmer) planet has been discovered in its orbit–HD 164595 b. But as Gilster explained, “there could, of course, be other planets still undetected in this system.”

Don the Con makes clear that he and his followers should leave the United States

source: NBC Sports

Trump weighs in on Kaepernick situation

" It was only a matter of time until presidential candidate Donald Trump weighed in on the Colin Kaepernick situation. And it was only a matter of time until Trump said exactly what you would expect him to say about Kaepernick.

“Well, I have followed it, and I think it’s personally not a good thing,” Trump told The Dori Monson Show, via Buzzfeed.com. “I think it’s a terrible thing. And, you know, maybe he should find a country that works better for him. Let him try. It won’t happen.”

The argument that Kaepernick’s concerns about the only country in which he ever has lived mean he should leave it easily can be turned around, however, to Trump and anyone else who is convinced that America needs to be made “great again,” which implies a clear belief that it’s currently not. And those people surely would say they have the right to stay here and try to make things better, which is precisely what Kaepernick is trying to do.

HILARIOUS- Greatest hits from Donald Trump’s clueless army of flunkies:

Kellyanne Conway, Katrina Pierson, ‘Says who?’ lawyer Michael Cohen, Rudy Giuliani and more

source: New York Daily News

" It’s hard to out-crazy crazy, but some of Donald Trump’s surrogates have managed to do just that.

The job of a surrogate, of course, is to sand down the candidate’s roughest edges — like when he, for example, advocates violence by “the Second Amendment people” against Hillary Clinton — but Trump’s bush-league flunkies have become media spectacles in their own right, manufacturing their own controversies instead of spinning the candidate’s mistakes.

We’re talking about these loyal Trump toadies:
