uawchild's JournalMerkel rules out migrant policy reversal after attacks
Source: BBC
Recent attacks in Germany involving asylum-seekers would not change its willingness to take in refugees, Chancellor Angela Merkel has said.
She said the attackers "wanted to undermine our sense of community, our openness and our willingness to help people in need. We firmly reject this".
But she did propose new measures to improve security.
These include information sharing, deciphering web chatter and tackling arms sales on the internet.
Two recent attacks in Bavaria were both by asylum seekers. A suicide bomb attack in Ansbach on Sunday that injured 15 people was carried out by a Syrian who had been denied asylum but given temporary leave to stay.
An axe and knife attack on a train in Wuerzburg on 18 July that wounded five people was carried out by an asylum seeker from Afghanistan.
Both men had claimed allegiance to so-called Islamic State.

How Democrats Embraced Gun Control at Their Convention
Source: Time
Christine Leinonen, a former state trooper from Polk City, Fla., stood stricken onstage, struggling to read the words about her son on the TelePrompTer at the rear of the convention hall. Christopher Drew Leinonen died six weeks ago, along with his boyfriend Juan and 47 others, in the massacre at Orlandos Pulse nightclub.
Christopher was my only child, and as I used to tell him, you cant do better than perfect, his mother told the delegates at the Democratic convention in Philadelphia on Wednesday night. Where was common sense the day he died? I never want you to ask that question about your child. Thats why I support Hillary Clinton.
Leinonen struggled to speak those words, but they were carefully chosen. Common sense is one of the terms that gun-control lobbyists advise their clients and allies to use when framing their arguments about the fraught subject of guns, lest opponents weaponize their words.

Michael Bloomberg Calls Donald Trump a ‘Dangerous Demagogue’
Source: Wall Street Journal
PHILADELPHIABillionaire businessman Michael Bloomberg delivered a stinging rebuke of GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump at the Democratic National Convention Wednesday night, calling him a dangerous demagogue.
Trump says he wants to run the nation like he runs his business. God help us, said Mr. Bloomberg, a former New York City mayor who is unaffiliated with any political party. Im a New Yorker. I know a con when I see one.
Mr. Bloomberg said there is no doubt in my mind that Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton is the right choice in the Nov. 8 election. He told fellow independents that their votes mattered and he urged the nation to elect a sane, competent person with international experience, a unifier.
Hillary Clinton understands this isnt reality television, he said. This is reality.

Why She Screamed: Meryl Streep’s Complex Bond With Hillary Clinton
Source: NY Times
PHILADELPHIA Meryl Streep, the most accomplished, awarded and chameleonic actress of her generation, once confessed something approaching envy for Hillary Clinton: For women of her age, Ms. Streep said, Mrs. Clinton was the yardstick by which they inevitably measured their lives sometimes flatteringly, sometimes not.
On Tuesday night, Ms. Streep took to the floor of the Democratic National Convention here to make the case that Mrs. Clinton, the object of that admiration, worry and judgment, was the right choice for the presidency.
What does it take to be the first female anything? Ms. Streep asked. It takes grit and it takes grace.
Ms. Streep appeared on stage shortly before 11 p.m. with raised fists and a loud, primal and triumphant scream seemingly delivered on behalf of women everywhere.
Throughout her speech, the 67-year-old Ms. Streep sought to place Mrs. Clinton, who is 68, in the pantheon of pioneering American women, from Amelia Earhart and Harriet Tubman to Sandra Day OConnor and Geraldine Ferraro. She dwelled the longest on Deborah Sampson, a woman who disguised herself as a man to serve in the Continental Army. Ms. Sampson was shot while serving and removed the musket ball herself to avoid revealing her gender.

Let's celebrate the history that was made last night!
Hillary is THE latest breaking news story TODAY.
Bernie Sanders reads out his call with President Obama
Source: Politico
Sen. Bernie Sanders spoke with President Barack Obama on Tuesday night, he told delegates at a breakfast at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday morning.
Sanders said he had repeated his message about the need for more progress while praising Obama for the work he has done over the past eight years.
What I told him is what I said publicly, he said. Of course, as a nation we are much, much better off today than we were when [President George W.] Bush left office and we were losing 800,000 jobs a month. But of course thats true: We had a $1.4 trillion deficit when Bush left office and the worlds financial system -- Republicans seem to forget about that -- was on the verge of collapse. Thats what Obama inherited. Are we better off today? Of course we are, but it is not good enough.
Sanders then went on to discuss the policies that he wants to see enacted, namely raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour.

Can't ask for much more than that. Senator Sanders is supporting the Clinton-Kaine ticket AND still is fighting the good fight on the issues.
Bravo.
Hillary Clinton makes history with Democratic presidential nomination
Source: CBC
Hillary Clinton says Democrats "just put the biggest crack in that glass ceiling" on the night of her presidential nomination.
In a brief video appearance near the end of the second night of the convention she offered a message to any of the little girls who stayed up to watch.
"I may become the first woman president, but one of you is next."
After her historic nomination vote, supporters ranging from children's advocates to celebrities to other politicians took the stage one after the other to talk about Clinton's work, particularly for children's causes.
As the night's keynote speaker, Clinton's husband, former president Bill Clinton, strode onto the stage and launched into a speech about his wife's accomplishments and his relentless efforts to convince her to marry him.

And a different emphasis on this HUGE story, this time from Hillary's perspective.
A historic night for Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party
Source: Washington Post
PHILADELPHIA Hillary Clinton on Tuesday became the first woman to be nominated for president by a major political party on a historic night during which her campaign also sought to reintroduce her to skeptical voters and calm continuing tensions here.
Part of that task fell to former president Bill Clinton, who delivered a keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention that began by recounting his courtship of his wife and detailed her lengthy career in public service, including helping children, immigrants and people with disabilities.
Shes the best darn change maker I ever met in my entire life, the former president said. This woman has never been satisfied with the status quo on anything. She always wants to move the ball forward. Thats just who she is.
Bill Clinton also argued that Republicans had tried to turn his wife into a cartoon during their national convention last week in Cleveland.
Whats the difference in what I told you and what they said? he asked. One is real, and the other is made up. .?.?. You just have to decide which is which, my fellow Americans.

Bill Clinton is a superb orator.
Amazing personal story of Hillary and his journey together -- to think they BOTH will one day be ex-Presidents!
Amazing.
Hillary Clinton is officially the Democratic Party’s nominee
Source: Vox
PHILADELPHIA Hillary Clinton is officially the Democratic Partys nominee for president of the United States.
The nomination was made official at around 6:30 pm after Clinton won the requisite 2,383 delegates.
Though many anticipated it to be a tense moment the first day of the convention was interrupted by booing and "lock her up!" chants the roll call vote wound up being an emotional moment for both candidates delegates. As the roll call proceeded, Sanders smiled with tears in his eyes.
Before voting started, Sen. Barbara Mikulski, the first woman elected to the US Senate, gave a passionate speech nominating Clinton.
"It is with a full heart that I am here today as we nominate Hillary Clinton to be the first woman president," Mikulski said. "Our Founding Fathers gave us a great start. But it was the Founding Mothers who said, 'Do not forget the ladies, or they will foment a revolution!'"

"It feels surreal. It feels like Im making one of the greatest decisions of my life. As a mother of an 8-year-old girl, Im creating a future where female leadership is the norm," said Maxine Outerbridge, 27, the youngest member of the New York delegation that put Clinton over the top. "It feels incredible."
I bet it does feel incredible! That's one big step for Hillary Clinton, one giant step for woman-kind!
wooo hoooo!
Everyone here is running around the living room hugging each other. lol
The Supreme Court hangs in the balance
Obstructionist racist Republicans in the Senate have prevented President Obama from filling the Supreme Court vacancy left open by the death of Justice Anthony Scalia.
The Supreme Court is presently divided between 4 conservative and 4 more liberal Justices -- the next president will get to decide the majority philosophy of the court by making a critical lifetime appointment, a decision that could set the balance for decades to come.
Electing Hillary Clinton as president and regaining a majority in the Senate are both within our reach this election. As a Senator Sanders supporter, I am asking like minded people to please consider what's at stake in who gets to make the next Supreme Court appointment and join me in supporting the Clinton-Kaine ticket.
I wish I could be more articulate here, I am struggling because this is an extremely important decision and one that can't be left for Donald Trump to make.
Please, don't vote for third party candidates, do not abstain from voting, do not vote apathetically -- vote like the future course of our country depends on your enthusiastic participation this election, because it does.
Thank you.
Malicious Intruders?
I don't know for sure, but there are a lot of extremely low post count members bashing Bernie supporters in very general terms.
Almost seems like their intent is to stir up divisions and hurt our chances in November.
It's one thing to critize specific actions but many of these people with less than 50 posts are taking out a very broad brush to smear a large segment of democrats.
I realize it's hard to police such things, the MIR team aren't mind readers after all, but a lot of these post seem to just be purposely divise.
