Two men try to pelt Ukraine's national hero with eggs in Odesa (video)

Source: Ukraine Today

Nadiya Savchenko recently sparked public outcry calling for direct peace talks with Russia-backed militants in the east

On Sunday, July 24, two men tried to pelt eggs at Nadiya Savchenko, Ukrainian MP, delegate to PACE and military pilot (recently released and brought back from Russia to Ukraine), while she was addressing Ukrainians in Odesa.

According to local newspaper ‘Dumskaya', Savchenko delivered her speech on the improvised stage, which is installed in the square where an ongoing protest against Odesa Mayor Hennady Trukhanov takes place.

Two men threw eggs at her but missed their target. They were detained by police.

"Also she said in an interview broadcast July 21 on Ukraine's Channel Five that Ukrainians must "ask for forgiveness." Savchenko believes the Donbas conflict parties have to start talking and hearing each other. Otherwise, she said, the violence that gripped the country's Donbas region since April 2014 would continue."

So, they loved her when she was in jail in Russia, but they throw eggs at her now that she's calling for peace talks?

This is the problem, there seems to be less and less room for ANY middle ground or compromises.

This woman is a Ukrainian NATIONALIST FIREBRAND, certainly NOT a RUSSIAN APOLOGIST, and even SHE can't call for talks and working for peace in eastern Ukraine.

Nice.

Munich shooting: Gunman 'planned attack for year'

Source: BBC

The teenage gunman who killed nine people in Munich on Friday had been planning his attack for a year, German authorities say.

David Ali Sonboly, 18, who had a Glock pistol and more than 300 bullets, killed himself after the attack.

Bavarian government officials said he appeared to have bought the illegal pistol used in the attack on the so called "dark net".
Vigils continue in the city to commemorate the victims.

Seven of the dead were teenagers - two Turks, two Germans, a Hungarian, a Greek and a Kosovan.

Japan business lobby says Abe government can't rely on nuclear energy

Source: Reuters

apan's use of nuclear power is unlikely to meet a government target of returning to near pre-Fukushima levels and the world's No.3 economy needs to get serious about boosting renewables, a senior executive at a top business lobby said.

Under Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's energy policies, nuclear is supposed to supply a fifth of energy generation by 2030, but Teruo Asada, vice chairman of the Japan Association of Corporate Executives, said Japan was unlikely to get anywhere near this.

The influential business lobby has issued a proposal urging Tokyo to remove hurdles for renewable power amid the shaky outlook for nuclear power after the 2011 Fukushima disaster.

The move shows how business attitudes are now shifting as reactor restarts get held up by legal challenges, safety issues and public scepticism.

UK Conservative Party chairman says Brexit must be binding

Source: Reuters

Britain's vote to leave the European Union must be binding, the chairman of Britain's ruling Conservative Party said on Sunday, and Article 50, which formally starts the exit process from the bloc, would be triggered before the next election.

Patrick McLoughlin, who was made party chairman by new Prime Minister Theresa May last week, told the BBC's Marr Show that the vote for Brexit meant Britain must now get control of its own borders and that immigration must be reduced.

Asked about a report in the Observer newspaper that an "emergency brake" on the free movement of people was being discussed, which would allow Britain to keep access to the European single market, McLoughlin said: "let us see."

"I'm quite clear that the referendum result is binding on parliament," he said.

Turkey ruling, opposition parties to rally together after coup

Source: Reuters

Supporters of Turkey's ruling and main opposition parties, usually bitter foes, were set to rally together on Sunday in support of democracy following a failed military coup as President Tayyip Erdogan tightens his grip on the country.

In another demonstration of unity after the coup, which was staged by a faction within the armed forces, the head of Turkey's air force issued a rare statement stressing "absolute obedience" to the chief of the military General Staff. Some members of the air force were involved in the coup.

The chief of the military General Staff, Hulusi Akar, who was held hostage by the plotters on the night of July 15, condemned the plotters on Sunday as "cowards in uniform" who had greatly harmed the nation and the army.

Erdogan, who narrowly escaped capture and possible death during the attempted coup, has declared a state of emergency, allowing him to sign laws without prior parliamentary approval in a drive to root out supporters of the coup.

Brexit: EU considers migration ‘emergency brake’ for UK for up to seven years

Source: The Guardian - UK

Plans to allow the United Kingdom an exemption from EU rules on freedom of movement for up to seven years while retaining access to the single market are being considered in European capitals as part of a potential deal on Brexit.

Senior British and EU sources have confirmed that despite strong initial resistance from French president François Hollande in talks with prime minister Theresa May last week, the idea of an emergency brake on the free movement of people that would go far further than the one David Cameron negotiated before the Brexit referendum is being examined.

If such an agreement were struck, and a strict time limit imposed, diplomats believe it could go a long way towards addressing concerns of the British people over immigration from EU states, while allowing the UK full trade access to the European market.

While the plan will prove highly controversial in many member states, including France, Poland and other central and eastern European nations, the attraction is that it would limit the economic shock to the EU economy from Brexit by keeping the UK in the single market, and lessen the political damage to the European project that would result from complete divorce.

Car Bomb Murder of Pavel Sheremet Dashes Hopes in Post-Maidan Ukraine

MOSCOW — Pro-western hipsters flocked to Ukraine's Maidan Square two years ago to cheer the popular uprising that ousted Russian ally Viktor Yanukovych.

This week's killing of investigative journalist Pavel Sheremet, who was blown up in a car half-a-mile from the famous protest site, is a reminder how much of that optimism has been lost.

Instead of becoming a market-driven democracy with respect for the rule of law, Ukraine is feared by many to have descended instead into corruption, violence and political chaos.

The rumbling conflict with Russian-backed separatists in the country's east, and the annexation of Crimea, only heighten the sense that Ukraine has lost its way.

"What's happening in the country is a catastrophe," ran a typical comment on social media after Wednesday;s explosion. "There are enough reasons for a third Maidan [revolution]."

The economy is in a downward spiral, leadership is constantly changing and hit jobs are back in the news — such as in April, when pro-Russian journalist Oles Busina was shot dead in Kiev. President Petro Poroshenko's approval rating stood at 17 percent in April, according to Rating Group pollster.

Dangerous profession: Journalists killed in Ukraine since Independence

Over 50 journalists have been killed in Ukraine since the country gained independence in 1991, despite the country being considered less bound by media restrictions than its other former Soviet neighbors.

The vast majority of the murders occurred during the early years of independence, under Presidents Leonid Kravchuk (1991-1994) and Leonid Kuchma (1994-2004).

Under Viktor Yushchenko (2005-2010), only two murders took place, while there were three under Ukraine’s fourth president, Viktor Yanukovych (2010-2014.)

This is the second murder of a journalist under President Petro Poroshenko’s term outside of the conflict zone in eastern Ukraine. But so far five Ukrainian journalists and five foreign journalists have lost their lives as a result of the war.

Ukraine is one of the most dangerous places in the world to operate as a journalist, according to Freedom House.
