At debate: Public hangings, African despots, pre-existing conditions and ducking the media

Familiar themes repeat at debate: Public hangings, African despots, pre-existing conditions and ducking the media

By Larrison Campbell and Bobby Harrison

On Tuesday night, after just under 10 minutes of questions, U.S.
Senate candidate Mike Espy thanked a crowd of reporters and walked away
from the podium.

The two dozen members of local and national media then waited for
Espy’s opponent in the U.S. Senate race, interim Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith,
who had just debated Espy in a room twenty yards from the podium, to
take questions.

Instead, Mississippi’s other U.S. Senator, Roger Wicker, appeared.
Asked if Sen. Hyde-Smith would be speaking to reporters, Wicker was

“No. I think the debate speaks for itself,” Wicker said.

“I am glad to be here tonight as a spokesman… I think the story
should be about the debate” and not what the candidates said after the
debate, he added.

Would not take reporters' questions as scheduled. Chickened out.

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) - A new video surfaced suggesting Mississippi Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith calling for stricter voting laws.

The video, which was taken at a campaign stop in Starkville on November 3rd, starts with Sen. Hyde-Smith being asked about voting.

Sen. Hyde-Smith says: "And then they remind me, that there's a lot of liberal folks in those other schools who that maybe we don't want to vote. Maybe we want to make it just a little more difficult. And I think that's a great idea."

Sen. Hyde-Smith was already facing controversy after comments she made during a Tupelo campaign stop on November 2nd where she said: "If I was invited to a public hanging, I would be on the front row."
