Why Nature supports Joe Biden for US president
We cannot stand by and let science be undermined. Joe Bidens trust in truth, evidence, science and democracy make him the only choice in the US election.
On 9 November 2016, the world awoke to an unexpected result: Donald Trump had been elected president of the United States.
This journal did not hide its disappointment. But, Nature observed, US democracy was designed with safeguards intended to protect against excesses. It is founded on a system of checks and balances that makes it difficult for a president to exercise absolute power. We were hopeful that this would help to curb the damage that might result from Trumps disregard for evidence and the truth, disrespect for those he disagrees with and toxic attitude towards women.
How wrong we turned out to be.
No US president in recent history has so relentlessly attacked and undermined so many valuable institutions, from science agencies to the media, the courts, the Department of Justice and even the electoral system. Trump claims to put America First. But in his response to the pandemic, Trump has put himself first, not America.

"The president's vitals over the last 24 hours were very concerning and the next 48 hours will be critical in terms of his care. We are still not on a clear path to a full recovery."

The Only Witness Who Heard Police Announce Themselves at Breonna Taylors Door Changed His Story
Aarin Sarpee initially told investigators that he didn't hear police say who they were before ramming through Taylor's door. Two months later, he drastically changed his recollection.
by Roberto Ferdman
When Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron announced this week that no charges would be brought in direct connection with Breonna Taylors death, he underscored that the officers executing the search warrant that night did identify themselves at Taylors door, pointing to a witness who corroborated the officers version of events.
But, according to audio and documents obtained by VICE News, that same witness changed his story in the months following the deadly raid.
The witness is Aarin Sarpee, who was picking up his daughter from his brothers apartment above Taylors at the time of the raid. According to officers interviews with investigators, Sarpee got into an argument with Detective Brett Hankison as the officers were banging on Taylors door.
The interviews were conducted by LMPDs Public Integrity Unit (PIU), which investigates officer-involved shootings. According to the Public Integrity Units investigative file, LMPD investigators spoke to Sarpee on the phone twice in the ensuing months. On March 21, a week after the shooting, Sgt. Jason Vance asked Sarpee directly if he heard anyone identify themselves as police. Sarpee responded, No, nobody identified themselves.

Breonna Taylor Deal Promises Reform Police Said They Did Years Ago
A Newsy-KYCIR investigation found that Louisville Metro Police repeatedly reported using a tool to flag officer behavior, but never implemented it.
As part of its historic, $12 million settlement with the family of Breonna Taylor, Louisville has agreed to implement several major police reforms, including creating an early warning system to identify officer behavioral trends to prevent misconduct.
This is not the first time the city has made such a promise. In the wake of police shootings and as a response to critical audits, the Louisville Metro Police Department has frequently asserted that it already has such a system, or is on the cusp of implementing one.
The current LMPD policy manual says it is actively using such a system. But its not, a joint investigation by Newsy and the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting has found.

Ron Cobb, a Designer on Star Wars, Back to the Future, and Alien, Dies at 83
Source: Gizmodo
Ron Cobb, one of the most prolific and impactful designers in cinema history, died this week at the age of 83.
Cobb is a name thats well-known to film nerds, but maybe not so much to the general public. Thats wild, considering he worked on some of the most successful and influential films from the 1970s, 80s, and 90s: Star Wars, Alien, Back to the Future, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Conan the Barbarian, The Abyss, The Last Starfighter, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, to name just a few.
On Star Wars, he designed some of the creatures in the Cantina scene, including the Hammerhead. On Back to the Future, he helped refine the design of the DeLorean to give it the DIY look that made it so memorable. For Alien, he did the exterior and interior of the main setting, the Nostromo. He helped Steven Spielberg come up with the idea for E.T. and had a cameo in the film. He designed all the ships in The Last Starfighter. We could go on and on.
