Jimmy, Rosalynn Carter Reach 70th Wedding Anniversary

Source: ABC News

Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter are marking their 70th wedding anniversary.

The former U.S. president and first lady married on July 7, 1946, in their small hometown of Plains, Georgia. Jimmy Carter, who's 91, and Rosalynn Carter, 88, told The Associated Press last month that mutual respect makes their long marriage possible.

The Carters also said they give each other plenty of space while working on separate projects.

The couple plans to spend the day at home in Plains, while the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta will mark the occasion with 70-cent admission. Museum officials say they'll deliver cards to the Carters.

US moves to leave 8,400 troops in Afghanistan aids allies

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama's decision to slow the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan will be welcomed at the NATO summit this weekend, providing aid for allied forces in the country and bolstering U.S. efforts to get more pledges of support for the war from U.S. allies.

Obama's move quells lingering questions within NATO about America's commitment to the ongoing conflict. And it will allow the U.S. military to expand its work with Afghan forces as they face a resurgent Taliban and a troubling presence of Islamic State fighters in the country.

The president announced Wednesday that he will leave 8,400 U.S. troops in Afghanistan into 2017, rather than cut the force to 5,500 at the end of the year as initially planned.

Democrats bet the House on Trump

Source: Politico

By Edward-Isaac Dovere
07/06/16 05:28 AM EDT

As part of an effort to nationalize the November elections by tying Republicans to their lightning-rod presidential nominee, House Democrats have begun collaborating with Hillary Clinton’s campaign to build what they’re calling their “Trump model” of persuadable voters.

With Donald Trump heading to Washington to meet with the House GOP Thursday, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is also preparing to go up on television in districts earlier than in any previous cycle with an ad campaign designed to buttress the Trump-centric messaging guidance that’s already emanating from Washington — all built around a “party over country”-themed plan of attack for the fall.

The hope is that a combination of Democrats riled up by Trump, moderate Republicans and independents turned off to the party brand, and disaffected Republicans staying home will accelerate blue shifts in marginal districts to start their long road back to the majority. But more immediately, they’re hoping to pick off enough moderate Republicans to leave House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) squeezed by the Freedom Caucus come January, which they believe will neutralize him both in Congress and as a potential 2020 challenger to Clinton.

Personally. I think they're being too modest in their goals: with Trump as the Republican nominee, my view is that outright control of the House is possible this year, albeit a 60-yard Hail Mary.

House Republican sides with Comey over Trump on Clinton emails

Source: CNN

(CNN) Rep. Chris Collins, R-New York, said Tuesday he agrees with FBI Director James Comey's decision to not recommend charges against Hillary Clinton for her use of a private email server at the State Department.

Collins, the first member of Congress to back Donald Trump, told CNN's Wolf Blitzer on "The Situation Room" that on the FBI's decision, he agrees with Comey -- not Trump.

"Director Comey is one of the better appointments that President Obama has made and I accept what he said that while her actions may not have been intended, it shows extremely poor judgment," Collins said.

Ronald Reagan’s Solicitor General Has Had Enough of Trump

Source: Slate

July 5 2016 4:50 PM
By Osita Nwanevu

The man who represented the Reagan administration 25 times at the Supreme Court has issued a stinging rebuke of Donald Trump in an exclusive to Slate. Charles Fried, who served as solicitor general from 1985-1989 and now teaches constitutional law at Harvard Law School, tells Slate that Trump is the most risky in a string of recent GOP candidates that have forced a choice between party and country.

Here is the full comment:

Though long a registered Republican, this will be the third consecutive presidential election in which my party forces the choice between party and, in John McCain’s words, putting America first. Sarah Palin, McCain¹s erratic and surely regretted choice as running mate, in her voluble and opinionated ignorance was an early precursor of Donald Trump. It was the spirit of Sarah Palin and those who cheered her on that animated the subsequent defeat of such traditional Republicans as Bob Bennett in Utah, Dick Lugar in Indiana, and Eric Cantor in Virginia. Many who survived only did so by pretending to positions they did not hold. There was no more transparent pretender than Mitt Romney in 2012. Now those same forces have given us Donald Trump, whose presumptive presence at the head of the Republican ticket disgraces not only the party but the nation. You sow the wind and reap the whirlwind. It is to Romney's credit that this year, like John Paulson and George Will, he is standing up against the brutal, substantively incoherent, and authoritarian tendencies of Donald Trump.

Fried is not the first figure with ties to Reagan to speak out over Trump. Last month, Richard Armitage, assistant secretary of defense under Reagan and George W. Bush’s deputy secretary of state, told Politico that he would be voting for Hillary Clinton. In May, Robert Kagan, a former state department official in the Reagan administration, assessed Trump’s rise in a piece for the Washington Post called, “This is how fascism comes to America.” Former Reagan speechwriter Peggy Noonan has compared Trump unfavorably to the late president, as have his sons Ron and Michael. “Ronald Reagan would never take 11 million people or three million people or a million people and throw them out of the United States of America,” Michael Reagan told Politico last month.

When police found Andrew Sadek selling $20 worth of pot, they pressured him into being a confidential informant and told him to go after ‘harder drugs.’ Then he turned up dead

~

A frightened Sadek swore not to tell a soul about the undercover ops. He never spoke to his parents or a lawyer. He was encouraged to ferret out dealers and heavier drugs on his own, footage of the interview shows. The video was released to local media last year under open-records requests.

Six months later, Sadek turned up dead. Authorities pulled his body, bound to a backpack full of rocks, from the Red River. There was a bullet hole in his head. Police tried to tell his parents, John and Tammy Sadek, he committed suicide, Tammy Sadek told The Daily Beast.

~

On Monday, the family filed a wrongful death suit against Richland County and Deputy {Jason} Weber, who helmed the dangerous operation as part of the South East Multi-County Agency Narcotics Task Force, or SEMCA.

Police: Mom used infant to beat up man in Daytona Beach

Jul. 5, 2016 5:44 AM EDT

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — An 18-year-old woman has been arrested after police in Florida say she used her infant son to batter her boyfriend.

Beach Safety Ocean Rescue Captain Tammy Marris tells local news outlets the 6-month-old boy was taken to a hospital Monday afternoon where he was reportedly doing OK.

Officers responded shortly before 4:30 p.m. Monday to a beach in Daytona Beach. Marris says responders found Tatyana Allen had battered her boyfriend, also the baby's father, with the child.

Officers arrested Allen on charges of battery and infliction of physical/mental injury on a child. She was being held Monday night without bail. It's unclear whether Allen has an attorney.
