WIN!!WIN!!WIN!! Kick to 'ppreciate Doug Jones, and waggle the bird at DJT

The dam breaks here. The Trump stamp of approval is the new kiss of death. YEEHAW!!!

December 2, 2017

Still sorta new here at DU. Is it OK to start a Mueller appreciation thread? If so, this is that.

I know he's not really a partisan, and I know where he is he lands well to the right of most everybody here, but, man, I sure am feeling a lot of appreciation for the special prosecutor today. All politics aside. I'm encouraged that our system, the great American experiment, has the institutions in place that will bring down a demagogue like the shitstain in the White House (my apologies to all real stains of shit).

Trump to visit Salt Lake City on Monday, will announce a smaller Bears Ears and Grand Staircase

Source: Salt Lake Tribune

President Donald Trump will fly into Utah on Monday to announce that he’ll shrink the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments, sources familiar with the trip confirmed to The Salt Lake Tribune. Trump will travel to Salt Lake City for the announcement to change the boundaries of the two monuments but will not visit them, the sources said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the trip.

The White House said last month the president would travel to Utah to make an announcement on Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke’s recommendations to change the monuments. Trump had ordered a review of all monuments designated under the Antiquities Act going back to 1996, a time period that included President Bill Clinton’s naming of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

Sen. Orrin Hatch and other Utah officials have pressed for changes to the monuments, which cover large swaths of federal lands in the southern portion of the state. Environmentalists and tribes have said they will seek legal action to stop any changes, which they don’t believe are authorized under the 1906 Antiquities Act.

“The tribes view this as an affront to themselves and their own self determination,” said Natalie Landreth, senior staff attorney for the Native American Rights Fund. “All of us, all five tribes will be suing jointly the day he makes an announcement.”

This is a shame. These monuments are priceless pieces of our shared land, and sacred to many whose roots go very deep there.

I am quite sure that Liddle Donnie Bone-Spur could really use a good, long dose of wilderness a la Teddy Roosevelt; such solitude is healing and rejuvenating for most people, but I doubt that the grouchy, disapproving daddy's voice in dotard's head would quiet down long enough for all the wild landscapes in the world to get through to him. SAD!

Shout Out to Dem Voters in Utah's Third!!

I know it is one of the reddest districts in the country, and that Kathie Allen is a long shot to take the seat Chapped-Ass vacated in such a cowardly fashion. Still: Please Get Out there today (unless, of course, you voted early)!!

THANK YOU!!

P.S. I lived in UT County nearly 20 years (raised three non-Mo kids there), and now live in a wonderfully blue county in NV (we don't have a thing on the ballot today).

Everyone is wondering WHO; I am also wondering WHAT.

What crime(s) will be charged?

Not being a lawyer, I'm not really clear on what potential crimes could be charged, but I really want it to be something SERIOUS -- not just a parking ticket, if you get my drift.

Is there any light anybody has or can shed on what the indictment might contain? Much obliged.

WaPo: Bob Corker sounds like hes making a case for removing Trump from office

Early in this onslaught against Trump, Corker assured us that he considers all of his words carefully. “I don’t make comments I haven’t thought about,” he told ABC News. In other words: He truly believes all this stuff, and he's not just flying off the handle.

Which leads to the next question: If you truly believe all of that, wouldn't you also believe that Trump should be removed from office?

Corker's comments sure seem to be trending in that direction — whether he intends it or not. The senator is describing Trump as an imminent threat to American government and American lives. He's suggesting Trump is damaging American society. He says Trump isn't only failing, but that he's “unable to rise to the occasion." He suggests Trump was ready to do crazy things before Corker intervened and put a stop to it. He's basically arguing that Trump is derelict in his duties as president, or unfit for the office.

Depending upon whom you ask, that could be approaching grounds for impeachment — or the less likely option of removal via the 25th Amendment, in which Trump would be declared unfit by his own Cabinet.

Much more at link. A VERY interesting take on the "feud" between Corker and Donnie Bone-Spur, in my humble.

Utah Rep. Chris Stewart tweets, then deletes post about liberals wetting their pants over Trump spee

Source: Salt Lake Tribune

Washington • Rep. Chris Stewart poked fun at liberals in a tweet this week about their reaction to President Donald Trump’s speech to the United Nations — but then quickly deleted the post.
“Laughing,” Stewart tweeted. “Liberals going nuts after prez UN speech. His idea = defend freedom. Their respond = drink 18 glasses of water and wet pants.”
Trump’s speech, in which he called North Korea’s Kim Jong Un “Rocket Man” and declared that he would “totally destroy” the country if it continued its nuclear missile program, was roundly criticized by the left but welcomed by the right.
Stewart has more than 11,500 followers on Twitter.

"Their respond" ...ugh

Something we'd never say: God is punishing Texas for sending its electoral college votes to him.

Why does our side never say stuff like this? Because that would be stupid beyond all measure, and even the least of us tend to be far more rational and thoughtful than the brightest of the dim bulbs on the other side. It also shows why they seem to succeed beyond expectations. I mean, think about it; how easy would it be to lead a bunch of sheep stupid enough to think that natural disasters, etc., are the retributions of some angry, patriarchal deity.

The thought just occurred to me and I thought I'd share

Should the fasces on the wall of the House of Representatives be taken down? I'm torn.

On the one hand it is the original symbol of fascism (not to mention the source of the word itself) and has been embraced by neoNazis as well. The wanna-be soldiers of Vanguard America uses the symbol on their plastic shields during their various circle jerks.

On the other hand, I understand why the founders and subsequent generations embraced the symbol. The American Republic was inspired by the Roman Republic, and the fasces does represent e pluribus unum.

The symbol also appears in many other places, by the way. For years it was on the back of the dime. It is also worked into the chair in the Lincoln Memorial.

Anyway, I know there are much more pressing issues out there. But in light of the current national debate over other public displays in the Capitol building, I couldn't help think about the prominent display of the fasces in the House chamber. Notice how they flank the Speaker's rostrum.

Hatch breaks with Trump, says transgender people should be able to serve in the military

Source: Salt Lake Tribune

Washington • Sen. Orrin Hatch broke with President Donald Trump on Wednesday, disagreeing with the commander in chief's new directive to bar transgender people from military service.

"I don't think we should be discriminating against anyone," Hatch, a Utah Republican, said in a statement on Twitter. "Transgender people are people, and deserve the best we can do for them."

Hatch added that he wanted more information and "clarity" from military leaders about Trump's decision.

-snip-

Hatch has been one of Trump's most unwavering supporters, but this was the second instance this week that the senator took issue with Trump statements or policies. The first was his spirited defense of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, whom Trump has suggested might not be long for the job because he recused himself from the investigation of Russian meddling in the election.

I have never been a fan of ole Whorin' Orrin, but if this helps create a fissure within the fetid ball of turd that is the GOP these days, I can get behind that!
