Bob Dylan's Nobel silence 'impolite and arrogant' - Nobel committee member

Source: BBC

Bob Dylan's failure to acknowledge his Nobel Prize in literature is "impolite and arrogant", according to a member of the body that awards it.

The 75-year-old singer was named the shock winner of the prize last week.

But all efforts by the Swedish Academy to contact him have failed, and he has not acknowledged the win in public.

Academy member Per Wastberg told Swedish television: "He is who he is," adding that there was little surprise Dylan had ignored the news.

"We were aware that he can be difficult and that he does not like appearances when he stands alone on the stage," he told Sweden's Dagens Nyheter newspaper in a separate interview.

A reference to the prize was removed from Dylan's website last week.

It is still not known if he will travel to Stockholm to receive the prize on 10 December. If he does not, a ceremony marking his career will go ahead as planned, Mr Wastberg said.

Mr Wastberg called the snub "unprecedented", but one person has previously rejected the Nobel Prize in Literature - French author and philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre in 1964.

Texan man raped in jail gets billed for care

Source: KPRC

KANSAS CITY, MO - A former Missouri inmate said he was raped in jail, then received the bill for his injuries.

He is breaking his silence. The victim, who asked to conceal his identify and be referred as “Matthew,” said the attack happened in a dark communal bathroom.

Matthew was billed more than $900 for the ambulance ride from the Jackson County Detention Center to Truman Medical Center.

He said in the attack, he was slammed against a wall and raped, and several teeth were broken. Once he arrived at the hospital, medical staff performed a rape kit. Matthew said he needed more than 10 stitches.

After spending a short time in the hospital, he was sent back to jail to finish his sentence for marijuana related probation violation, he said. Later he was sent a bill.

“I couldn’t believe it. I thought it was a joke. I mean for them to call an ambulance for me and then send me a bill after this happens,” Matthew said. “I have never felt this way in my life, as far as not feeling like a man.”

The Jackson County Detention Center said they are investigating. Inmates get free medical care, but if they have to leave and go to the hospital, they have to pay for it themselves, according to Jackson County jail.

They also suggested that Matthew apply for victim compensation funds from the state.

Florida man arrested for having milk crate

AUBURNDALE, Fla. (WFLA) – A Polk County man is behind bars after a deputy spotted him with a milk crate.

On Thursday just before 10 p.m. a PSCO deputy stopped two men on bikes. The deputy noticed that Timothy Troller, of Auburndale, had a dairy crate attached to his a purple Mongoose BMX bicycle.

The dairy crate had the business name of Sunshine State Dairy Farms clearly marked on the sides of the dairy crate. Troller claimed he found the crate on the side of the road and attached it to his bike.

Troller was arrested and charged with Possession of Dairy Crate. “I never heard of it. This is the first time ever,” Edward Hale, Troller’s grandfather said. “He didn’t know it was against the law, or he wouldn’t have put it on the front of the bicycle and rode up and down the road,” Hale said.

“You’re possessing something that is stolen from a business, whether it’s as small as a milk crate, or a shopping cart,” Polk County Sheriff’s Office Spokesperson, Carrie Horstman said. “He was charged with possessing stolen property. He may pay a fine or spend a few days in jail.”

“Deputies are actually out there proactively looking for things that don’t look right; looking for suspicious things. If they see somebody riding a bicycle at 10 o’clock at night they may have a conversation with them. They are looking for people who are doing even the smallest crime, because, what we’ve learned is, those who will go out an steal a milk crate, for example, are the same people who are probably breaking into cars, breaking into your house,” Horstman said.

Motherless babies possible as scientists create live offspring without need for female egg

Motherless babies could be on the horizon after scientists discovered a method of creating offspring without the need for a female egg. The landmark experiment by the University of Bath rewrites 200 years of biology teaching and could pave the way for a baby to be born from the DNA of two men. It was always thought that only a female egg could spark the changes in a sperm required to make a baby, because an egg forms from a special kind of cell division in which just half the number of chromosomes are carried over. Sperm cells form in the same way, so that when a sperm and egg meet they form a full genetic quota, with half our DNA coming from our mother and half from our father.

But now scientists have shown embryos could be created from cells which carry all their chromosomes which means that, in theory, any cell in the human body could be fertilised by a sperm. hree generations of mice have already been created using the technique and are fit and healthy and now researchers are planning to test out the theory using skin cells. Dr Tony Perry, a molecular embryologist and senior author of the study, said: “Some people say start the day with an egg, but what this paper says is that you don’t necessarily have to start development with one. “It has been thought that only an egg cell was capable of reprogramming sperm to allow embryonic development to take place. “Our work challenges that dogma, held since early embryologists first observed mammalian eggs in around 1827 and observed fertilisation 50 years later, that only an egg cell fertilised with a sperm cell can result in a live mammalian birth.

“We’re talking about different ways of making embryos. Imagine that you could take skin cells and make embryos from them. This would have all kinds of utility.” For the initial experiments, scientists "tricked" an egg into developing into an embryo using special chemicals which makes the egg think it has been fertilised. Crucially the cells in an embryo copy themselves completely when they divide, and so mirror closely most other cells in the body, such as skin cells. When scientists injected the embryos with sperm, they grew into healthy mice which went on to produce their own litters.

Airbrushed From History: 200+ Americans Who Jumped From WTC 1 and 2

Almost all of them jumped alone, although eyewitnesses talked of a couple who held hands as they fell. One woman, in a final act of modesty, appeared to be holding down her skirt. Others tried to make parachutes out of curtains or tablecloths, only to have them wrenched from their grip by the force of their descent. The fall was said to take about ten seconds. It would vary according to the body position and how long it took to reach terminal velocity — around 125mph in most cases, but if someone fell head down with their body straight, as if in a dive, it could be 200mph. When they hit the pavement, their bodies were not so much broken as obliterated.

Nothing more graphically spells out the horror of the 9/11 attacks on the Twin Towers than the grainy pictures of those poor souls frozen in mid-air as they fell to their deaths, tumbling in all manner of positions, after choosing to escape the suffocating smoke and dust, the flames and the steel-bending heat in the highest floors of the World Trade Centre. And yet, tragically, they are in many ways the forgotten victims of September 11. Even now, nobody knows for certain who they were or exactly how many they numbered. Perhaps worst of all, surprisingly few even want to know.

From the earliest days after the 9/11 attacks, the American establishment and the media showed an overwhelming reluctance to dwell on those who jumped or fell from the Twin Towers. If this was simply down to qualms at being considered intrusive or voyeuristic when individuals in the most appalling circumstances chose in desperation to die very publicly, it would be understandable. But there are other, more complicated, reasons. In the aftermath of this attack on America’s sovereign territory — a period of intense patriotism — some considered that to choose to die rather than be killed showed a lack of courage.

And in this country of intense religious fervour, many believe that to be a ‘jumper’ was to choose suicide rather than accept the fate of God — and suicide in whatever circumstances is considered shameful or, indeed, a sin that will send you to Hell. At the office of the New York chief medical examiner, a spokesman said this week that they did not consider these people ‘jumpers’. She insisted they fell from the 1,350ft tall, 110-floor skyscrapers, for jumping would imply suicide.

‘Jumping indicates a choice, and these people did not have that choice,’ she said. ‘That is why the deaths were ruled homicide, because the actions of other people caused them to die. The force of explosion and the fire behind them forced them out of the windows.’
