Certain categories of people, including felons, certain domestic abusers, and severely mentally ill people are prohibited by federal law from possessing guns. There was sufficient evidence to judge whether the shooter was a prohibited gun possessor in 116 of the 133 incidents (87%).
Of those 116 incidents, 44 (38%) involved a prohibited possessor, and 73 (62%) did not.

The Washington Navy Yard shooting a year ago that left 12 victims dead was one of more than five dozen mass shootings and spree killings in the U.S. since 1984. The shooter, Aaron Alexis, who also died,
was armed with a legally obtained shotgun and a .45-caliber handgun taken from a security guard at the scene.
Alexis had told police earlier that he’d heard voices, and had received mental health treatment.

Just as a perpetrator used a .40-caliber Glock to slaughter students in Red Lake, Minnesota, in 2005, so too did the one in Aurora, along with an AR-15 assault rifle, when blasting away at his victims in a darkened movie theater. In Newtown, Connecticut, the attacker wielded a .223 Bushmaster semi-automatic assault rifle as he massacred 20 school children and six adults.

On the night of February 27-28, 1933, a mentally disabled Dutch citizen set fire to the German parliament building (the Reichstag). Hitler and his propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels, presented the incident as the prelude to an armed Communist uprising and persuaded the aging President Paul von Hindenburg to establish what became a permanent state of emergency. This decree, known as the Reichstag Fire Decree, suspended the provisions of the German constitution that protected basic individual rights, including freedom of the press, freedom of speech, and freedom of assembly. The decree also permitted increased state and police intervention into private life, allowing officials to censor mail, listen in on phone conversations, and search private homes without a warrant or need to show reasonable cause. Under the state of emergency established by the decree, the Nazi regime could arrest and detain people without cause and without limits on the length of incarceration.

Right-wing Texas megachurch pastor admits he’d vote for Donald Trump over Jesus — who he accused of being weak on terrorism.
Robert Jeffress, pastor at 12,000-member First Baptist Church in Dallas, has been a vocal supporter of the presumptive Republican nominee — who he believes is the only candidate who can defeat Hillary Clinton.
Some conservatives have criticized Jeffress, who bashed Christians who don’t support Trump out of “pride,” and the frequent Fox News guest defended himself Tuesday on talk radio host Mike Gallagher’s program, reported Right Wing Watch.
Jeffress, who urged Christian voters to impose a “religious litmus” test when he backed Ben Carson for president, took the exact opposite position after switching his allegiance to Trump.

Donald Trump is famous for decisively firing people. But according to multiple reports on Friday, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee tried and failed to fire his own running mate ― all before he’d even formally announced who he was.
CNN’s Dana Bash and NBC News’ Kelly O’Donnell both reported that Trump got cold feet Thursday night over his apparent veep choice, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence. According to Bash, Trump was “so unsure” about his offer to Pence that “around midnight last night, he asked aides if he could get out of it.”
