I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up, live out the true meaning of its creed. We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal.

But that iconic line did not come until 11 minutes into Martin Luther King, Jr.'s speech. So we thought today would be a good time to play some other parts of the speech that are not quite as famous.

When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men - yes, black men as well as white men - would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked insufficient funds. But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt...

Let freedom ring. And when this happens, and when we allow freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children - black men, white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics - will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual - free at last, free at last. Thank God Almighty, we are free at last.

A French politician has threatened to file a lawsuit against anyone who shares photos or videos of police enforcing a ban on the burkini — the full-body bathing suit, designed for Muslim women, that has suddenly become a symbol of religious and social tensions in France. The statement comes after the widespread circulation of photos showing a Muslim woman removing her clothes in front of four male police officers on a beach in Nice.

Christian Estrosi, president of the Regional Council of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur and deputy mayor of Nice, said in a statement Wednesday that the photos "provoke defamatory remarks and threats" against police agents. He added that legal complaints have already been filed "to prosecute those who spread the photographs of our municipal police officers and those uttering threats against them on social networks."

A black man has been shot by US police after calling them out to his home to assist him and his wife with a robbery in Indiana.

Carl Williams, who lives in Indianapolis, rang the city's police department to say his wife had been assaulted by a black suspect with a rifle - but was then shot himself by the officer who arrived at the scene. In what the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) has called a "tragic incident", the 48-year-old was reportedly mistaken for his wife's assailant by a police officer with nine years' experience.

The shooting, which has left Mr Williams fighting for his life in hospital, is the latest in a series of similar incidents that have sparked a crisis in the US over race relations and police training.

"The officers involved were forced to make a split second decision based on the information and totality of the circumstances known at the time. The officer involved was a nine-year veteran of the east district late shift. Again this was tragic and unforeseen. I don't know of any officer who goes out wanting to get into a shootout with anyone, but especially not as in this case a homeowner."

A Florida man is upset after his niece brought home a Pledge of Allegiance waiver that asked parents to sign and return the form if they’d like their child to “be excused from reciting” it.

It read: “I understand my rights as a parent and I request that my child, noted above, be excused from reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. This request includes standing and placing his/her right hand over his/her heart.”

“My niece brought this home from school today…What is happening to our country?!?” he said in (a Facebook) post.

Brienen’s sister-in-law returned the form with her daughter, writing the following in response: “This is the dumbest thing I have ever read and I am so ashamed of this.”

Trump, the wife of the Republican presidential nominee, has placed The Daily Mail and other news organizations "on notice... for making false and defamatory statements about her supposedly having been an 'escort' in the 1990s," Charles Harder, a lawyer for Trump, said in a statement.

In addition, Harder said that he had put Politico on notice for "false and defamatory statements" regarding its reporting on Trump's immigration history. Politico confirmed that its reporters had been sent notices.

The notices come just three days after The Daily Mail, a UK publication, published a report citing a story in a Slovenian magazine that claimed a New York modeling agency that once represented Trump "also operated as an escort agency for wealthy clients." That report was then picked up or referenced by other news outlets.

Some states have much more economic diversity. Many of the wealthiest states are also home to the poorest places not just in the state, but also in the country. Median incomes in Cumberland, Maryland and Camden, New Jersey are more than $40,000 lower than the typical household annual income across the state.

In New York there are 35 towns where the median household income is more than double the national median income of $53,482. All 35 of those New York towns are within 75 miles of Manhattan. By contrast, the median household income in Maine’s richest town is less than the national median income. Maine’s largest city has a population of less than 67,000 residents — a fraction of the 1.6 million residents in New York City’s Manhattan borough alone.
