Another example of why grammar matters

A hyphen would have made a HUGE difference in this headline in the Pratt Tribute in Pratt, Kansas...

Former Major League Baseball players Luis Valbuena and Jose Castillo die in car crash

RIP

Former Major League Baseball players Luis Valbuena and Jose Castillo were killed in a car accident Thursday night, a spokesperson for their Venezuelan team, Cardenales de Lara, confirmed.

Valbuena was 33. Castillo was 37.

The crash occurred after Valbuena and Castillo left the University Stadium at Caracas after playing a game in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League. Venezuelan authorities said their car went to the opposite side of the road while trying to avoid a sliding rock.

The players were en route to the city of Barquisimeto, where they were planning to play against Bravos de Margarita on Friday.

Does anybody have a sense of optimism about the future?

When you think about what we read here at the DU daily (and what we hear from media), there is plenty of talk about the dysfunctional state of politics.

We know America's debt is nearing crippling levels and the economy will suffer accordingly.

There's no end to talk about climate disasters and coming catastrophes.

On the health front, we hear constantly about the toll of opioid addictions and the obesity epidemic.

Other than the Democrats eventually retaking the White House and the Senate -- and they'll have plenty of work to do to clean up the huge messes -- what gives you any sense of optimism these days?

Seattle's new NHL franchise is now official

https://twitter.com/NHL/status/1070001304184020992

SEA ISLAND, Ga. -- The NHL will add a 32nd franchise in Seattle, the league announced Tuesday after a unanimous vote by the board of governors.

The Seattle franchise will enter the league for the 2021-22 season as a member of the Pacific Division. That will trigger a realignment that will send the Arizona Coyotes to the Central Division. The cost for league entry will be $650 million, up 30 percent from the $500 million paid by the Vegas Golden Knights to enter the NHL last season.

Seattle's ownership group had expressed a desire to enter the league in 2020, but the league had reservations about whether that might rush the $700 million renovations to downtown KeyArena, and instead pushed the entry date a year later.

Seattle, the 18th largest city in the United States, has not had a winter sports team since the NBA's SuperSonics left for Oklahoma City in 2008. The Sonics also played in KeyArena. The WNBA's Seattle Storm are one of the current tenants of the arena, but will temporarily relocate for the 2019 and 2020 seasons as the building undergoes renovations.

Boston Red Sox accept invitation to the White House

They're no better than those dang New England Patriots, I tell ya!

The Boston Red Sox have accepted an invitation to go to the White House, and manager Alex Cora, who has been critical of President Donald Trump's comments on Puerto Rico, says he will attend.

Red Sox president Sam Kennedy announced the visit Monday at a screening of the team's World Series documentary. He said the White House had extended the invitation and the team had accepted. No date has yet been scheduled.

In September, Cora -- the first Puerto Rican manager to win the World Series -- expressed frustration that the president questioned the death toll left by Hurricane Maria on the island in 2017. Cora called the president's comments "disrespectful."

"It's a little bit, kind of like, frustrating that the topic keeps coming and coming and coming," Cora said. "What's the point, honestly? And I respect him. He's the president of the United States. But I don't agree with a lot of stuff that he says about us."

Some less-than-prolific QB performances today

Quite a few quarterbacks put up very little yardage through the air. Some vets, some inexperienced...

Matt Ryan 16/26, 131 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT

Lamar Jackson 12/21, 125 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT (1 rush TD)

Eli Manning 19/35, 170 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT

Ryan Tannehill 16/24, 137 yards, 3 TD, 1 INT

Josh Rosen 11/26, 149 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT

Cody Kessler 18/24, 150 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT

Jared Goff 17/33 207 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT

And let's not forget Drew Brees from Thursday's loss against Dallas:

Drew Brees 18/28, 127 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT

Despite the unimpressive stats, Rosen, Jackson, Manning, Tannehill and Goff were winners though.
