Fort Lauderdale airport shooter 'came here specifically' to attack, FBI says

Source: cnn

(CNN) — [Breaking news alert, posted at 11:01 a.m. ET Saturday]

The suspected gunman who opened fire at the Fort Lauderdale airport "came here specifically to carry out this horrific attack," Miami FBI Special Agent George Piro said Saturday. "We have not identified any triggers that would have caused this attack," he said.

Authorities "continue to look at the terrorism angle" as a possible motive for the shooting rampage that left five people dead at the Fort Lauderdale airport, Miami FBI Special Agent George Piro said Saturday. "We have not ruled out anything," he said. "We continue to look at all avenues, all motives."

Esteban Santiago went to baggage claim Friday afternoon and picked up his one piece of checked luggage.

There were no other bags, just a case with a handgun inside.

Santiago -- who just a few months ago reportedly had a mental evaluation after a bizarre visit to an FBI office in Alaska -- allegedly took the gun out of its case and fired at other passengers, killing five and wounding eight others.

Hate crime charges filed after reprehensible video shows attack on mentally ill man in Chicago

Source: WAPO

Authorities in Chicago charged four people with hate crimes Thursday following the emergence of a disturbing video showing them shouting obscenities about President-elect Donald Trump and white people while abusing a man authorities say has mental health problems.

The footage, which Chicago’s top police officer called “reprehensible,” quickly went viral online. In the shaky video, a terrified young man in a gray hooded sweatshirt and dark pants is seen crouching in a corner, his wrists and neck bound with orange bands, his mouth taped shut.

Police say this man — an unidentified 18-year-old from Crystal Lake, a city northwest of Chicago — spent as long as five hours physically tied up in a corner.

In video footage posted on Facebook, a young woman films as two young men slash the sleeves of his shirt with knives and take turns punching him, slapping him and stomping on his head. At one point, one man can be seen cutting the victim’s hair and scalp with a knife, and the victim is later shown bleeding from his injuries.

Turkey Says It Has Identified Gunman in Istanbul Nightclub Attack

Source: NYT

ISTANBUL — The Turkish authorities said on Wednesday that they had identified the fugitive gunman who went on a deadly rampage at an upscale Istanbul nightclub in the early hours of New Year’s Day, although they did not release his name.

“The identity of the person responsible for the Istanbul attack has been established,” the Turkish foreign minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, told the state-run news agency Anadolu, which also reported that the police had detained 20 people, believed to be Islamic State militants, in connection with the assault.

Some of those who were arrested, in the western Turkish province of Izmir, are thought to have lived with the attacker in the central city of Konya, Anadolu reported, adding that night vision equipment, a sniper scope, an ammunition belt and other military equipment had been found during police raids.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in his first public remarks since the attack, told an audience in Ankara, the capital, that the assault that left 39 people dead was a failed attempt to divide the Turkish people and to harm the country’s economy.
